Spotted a single Great northern yesterday floating off the coast. I notice great northerns have palers beaks than the other two.

You guys have such cooler names for them. We call them loons but I think diver sounds better.

I’ve seen a red throated and what I’m 90% sure was a black throated one this week from my window. They can be such a pain to ID

Considering how dramatically Pacific loon (Pacific diver?) is increasing on the New England coast of the northwestern Atlantic, I suspect it's only a matter of time before they're hitting western European shores in number also. Be ready!

These are called Loons in America, I believe.

+Heidi Nash Yes, Heidi, that's correct. The three species here are all found in the US. Great Northern Diver is your Common Loon, Black-throated is your Arctic Loon and Red-throated Diver is the most similarly named: Red-throated Loon. We also get your Pacific Loon/Diver as a very rare vagrant over here.

Yes that's right about them being called loons in America! Here in the UK we call people who are acting crazy a loon which is taken from a Loonie meaning a lunatic! Ha
