BTO Bird ID - Redstarts

In late summer and autumn Redstarts and Black Redstarts can turn up anywhere. The males are easy to identify but how do you separate females and young birds?
This video will help you to spot the subtle differences that will allow you confidently identify a bird that is not sporting the males stunning summer colours.

Thanks, very helpful! I may have found remains of an egg in the neighbourhood, possibly stolen by a jay.. redstart is best match I've found for the eggshell so far. Here in Israel they're normally on passage, not rare, and I've seen them locally a number of times. They don't usually stay to breed here but the habitat, suburban gardens, not impossible. Now I know what to listen for!

We have them coming to our garden tge whole summer, couldn't identify the birds for a long time. Very distinctive sound.

from 2 to 5 in the morning this damn little animal... makes a huge noise , it's minuscule compared to the sound it makes

The problem with these videos is that they talk over nearly all the bird calls and for anyone that doesn't have brilliant hearing it makes it very difficult to be able to hear the song properly.

I feel your pain, I've been trying to identify the little bugger thats been waking me up around 4 am for weeks, drives me a bit crazy. And she's right, its a black redstart, and ''once heard, it's never forgotten''. Traumatised by a bird, lol.

I live in South Africa and I've seen the black restart on my deck but only the females I haven't seen the males
