the Fee Bee call has "frequency matching." I did a blog post on this on an old blog. So the group of males try to lower their fee bee call to match the frequency of the dominant male with the lowest fee bee call. ecoechoinvasives.blogspot.com/2017/10/the-convergence-of-birdsong-prosody-and.html Now studies have shown that birds, just as humans, develop a stronger left brain dominance in the timing imitation of songs, whereas right brain dominance is for the frequency learning.

Please could you tell me what bird was singing in the background at 9:51 , It was a high pitched long song. We had that outside our house and we didn't see who it was, and we were wondering if it was a chickadee song, but it wasn't one that you covered here.

Thank you so much for this. I discovered long ago that the two tone call at 3:14 is what we hear most in our area of IL. Many years ago, I would hear it so often it annoyed me. Then...I had a breakdown as never before. I became suicidal and had to enter a psychiatric facility. I was in for 9 days. When I came home, this chickadee call was the first thing I heard when I got out of the car. My heart filled with peace and joy. It was so full. This little bird changed my life and helped to save it. Thank you for helping me remember this special love I have for them

When a black-capped chickadee sings his two-note descending call outside my office window, sometimes I play G6, F6 in a flute voice on my keyboard, and sometimes he answers me. Today he changed his call and flew off to a different tree. I wondered what we were talking about! I found your wonderful video and learned that his answer was a gargle call. He might have been defending his territory against my piano! Thanks for teaching us about chickadee calls!

The one call I absolutely love is the one a chickadee makes when it wrestles a sunflower out of the feeder. It does not happen with every chickadee. Only one (I am surmising) that may not be used to the feeder. I call it a victory cheep. They grab the seed and fly off calling out their victory. It is a gleeful call. These are my most favorite and I am very protective of them. I try to create feeders that allow them free access but limit larger birds.

Hi @@JillHarmony , I recommend a feeder from Lee Valley Tools that you can calibrate to keep out different size/weight animals: www.leevalley.com/en-ca/shop/garden/wildlife/bird-feeders/48756-large-squirrel-resistant-feeders I have mine set to feed finches and chickadees, and one cardinal at a time. The black-capped chickadee is my hands down favorite bird. I grew up listening to them in the north woods while deer hunting. I learned to mimic their calls perfectly but had no concept of their call patterns until now. I now realize that I tend to pro-long the "dee, dee" call which is a warning call. Ugh! Love this video and hope you see my comment after 5 years.

The Black Capped Chickadee is my favorite bird. I love the fee bee call best of all, and have answered them many times myself. It's fun getting in a dialogue, and I once had a chickadee follow me along while I was walking and calling back and forth with him. He flitted along among the trees while I walked along.

I love their little quiet chatters. When I go to feed them and reload a little feeder in the tree, they come closer with this type of chatter. It makes me feel part of the crowd and they seem happy to see me, telling others food has arrived. This happy chatter is like a thank you too. My fave birds!

Turns out, I have been whistling for my sweetie (mostly in stores to get his attention!) The fee bee-ee song. It works! It either lets him know where I am in the store or I just need him to look up at me. This is better than yelling his name.

My husband and I use this whistle for our son. I find that whistling cuts through the noise in a room. He hears it every time. We also have a different whistle for our daughter and they know who is needed by their whistle. I started this because my dad is hard of hearing and whistling is the only way I can get his attention. I can stand a foot away and yell his name and he wouldn't hear me. When I whistle even 10 feet away in a crowded room, he would always turn to look at me. He's the one that told me out of all the noise, he hears a whistle the best.

One of my favorite Birds. When I was just a wee lad oh, I would sometimes choose to walk to school in the winter. Passing through a section of woods, I could sit down and start imitating some of the chickadees calls. Not quite being mobbed, but many chickadees would fly to within 5 feet of where I sat, motionless.

Love our local black-capped chickadees. I think our favorite is the chicks' begging-for-food calls. We even wrote them a blues song for it: "Well now you sure know how to chicka/But you don't know how to dee-dee-dee..." Yeah, I know. We need a life. :-) So many of them come to the feeder that my wife renamed it to Chickadee International Heliport. But of course the jays and crows figured out how use this particular feeder, so sometimes it becomes Corvid International.

LOL I watched this video outside with my camera... and all the chickadees went nuts! I live close to a large city and decided to start a huge bird feeding racket a few years ago; an entire food table, numerous hanging feeders, suet, live mealworms (I breed them for those picky insectivores!), and seed sprouts. Over time, this has attracted hundreds if not thousands of birds. I had never seen a chickadee in my life before I started doing this, and my neighbors are all enjoying it very much! It's so fun to mimic the "Chicka-DEE-DEE-DEE" call because all the chickadees get massively triggered and to sound off! I love them so much.

Rarely see chickadees featured, so infinitely grateful for this showing. From 2000-2004 lived in Colorado. Had a wonderful back deck dedicated to all sorts of birds (unless the bear reached it first). When I finished setting out the various seeds & grains in their different feeders, I then held a small amount of seed in my palm. I had to totally quiet my mind, and be very still. There was one particular chickadee who had become comfortable landing on my palm and feeding itself. It not only gave me the gift of its landing, but with the amount of LOVE pouring through its tiny feet. That was unexpected ~ and ALWAYS received with Great Gratitude.

Lovely video, and well explained. A couple of years ago I started recording goldfinch vocalisations and found that domestic goldfinches learn to associate their calls with different rewards (food, drink, out-of-cage time, certain games). Interestingly, the goldfinch's warning call is also very much along the lines of "tseet" or "tsee tee". To see that chickadees have the same complexity is heartening. Makes you wonder what languages of other bird species humanity has been missing so far!

I hear the "gargle call" a lot when I'm refilling feeders in the morning. Interestingly, I hear the "gargle" when one of the birds is higher in a tree, and the "chick-a-dee" when they're lower. I've been hearing a chickadee making the 'begging dee' call around my house the past few days. I thought it was a sick adult. Nope! Just a cute little baby! Thanks for the informative video!!

I love Chickadees, we have so many in British Columbia, Canada. I have a bird feeder just for the chickadees. ♥️ 🤙🏼 Every winter my chickadee comes to my yard and picks the last of my winter greens for foods to store/eat.

Thank you so much!.Last winter I hung bird houses around our (tree surrounded) upper deck, never expecting the chickadees to fill them up in spring. Your videos really helped me understand what is going on here - it's their territory, I'm a welcome visitor but stay in my lane. They let me know when the feeder is empty!. (This year I watched lots of chicks take their first flight. They're still here but on their own! Nature is wild.) So I'm watching this on my deck right now and the birds living in the houses are hearing the calls and are confused and reacting so I had to go inside! lol I love them much and hope they stay forever.

Love this video - it gives me a whole new appreciation for these wonderful and gregarious birds - we live at 8,200 feet in Colorado San Juan Mountains and feed birds during the long winters - we take the feeders down in Spring due to frequent bear visits. We have numerous chickadees here and now have a whole different perspective of appreciating these beautiful creatures. I love going out to fill the feeders and hear how excited they get.

I'm so happy I stumbled upon your channel! The black capped chickadee has always been my favourite bird. When I go to a walking trail, near me, I bring black sunflower seeds and they land on my hand, shoulder or even head to eat!! Absolutely wonderful!! 🎶

Its a small reference pool but of the birds that visit our patio, I consider the chickadee to be the most graceful and brave little bird, making them my favorite. These audible observances are just another endearing feature. Thank you for sharing your findings.

I became obsessed with finding the origin of a high frequency prolonged bird call that occurs long before dawn and long after dusk where I live. Based on my research I believe it is a black capped chickadee. I understand they are the first birds to begin calling in the morning and the last to call after sunset.

Hi Lesley - I like the warning call "Chicka Dee dee dee dee dee dee" warning call. I wonder if other bird species nearby know it's a predator alert. I know when Blue Jays do their alert call, other bird species fly away or become very quiet. I do not have Chickadees where I live so this is a great way for me to learn about them. Thank you so much and for all of your hard work 👍👍- Stephanie

By the end of this week, we’ll have moved ourselves and 7 (indoor-only) cats 1500 miles west to northeastern South Dakota. I’ve already made a list of birds of the area and am looking forward to setting up feeders so they’ll get to know me before winter. Can’t wait! :)

Amazing video!! I hear the chickadees' calls mostly in the fall when it gets cool out, although that may be because I have everything open once the heat is over and I open up my house to the nice cool weather (that I'm looking so forward to right now). Every time I see a chickadee I think of WC Fields saying, "My little chickadee". LOL!!

I've been hearing the Black-Capped Chickadee for years here in Central Utah, but had no idea what it was, until your video, thank you! I always thought of the Fee Bee sound as "Seeee Sawww", because the notes and sounds reminds me of an old nursery-rhyme song I sang as a child: "See saw, marjory daw, Johnny shall have a new master..."

Yes, you can train them quite quickly to take food from your hand, especially if you've hung out a feeder. After they've gotten used to the feeder, go out on a very cold day and block it with your arm, offering food in your hand instead. It'll take a few minutes, but once they're desperate enough to overcome their fear they'll take the food - and once they start, they very quickly come back for 2nds & 3rds. I've had them land and stay there for several seconds, browsing for the choicest sunflower seed.

These birds have came to me, in small groups, while I was bow deer hunting, and dressed in camouflage including face cover, two different times. They've perched within 3 or 4 feet, beeping and looking at me. This in cool weather before I had fed any birds at the feeder. It seemed they were saying "Hi!, we know it's you, from the brown house". Real buddies.
