There are a lot of references in this MV you aren’t going to understand. I’m sure you have heard of the BU? The Bangtan Universe. If you haven’t it’s a fictional story line that runs between their music videos and short films and webtoons. It’s a lot to unpack. I’ve been an army since 2016 and I still don’t get the whole thing completely BUT most of this MV follows that story line. To just summarize without giving away too much is that the fire, water, candy bar are traumas in the members (their fictional characters) storyline. The song itself is also about love within yourself, not necessarily about another person. Enjoyed the reaction! You guys really have great content! Thank you and can’t wait for more!

This MV is so deep with references to BTS Universe (BU) storyline such as, the character JHope portraits at BU was abandoned by "his mother" in front of a merry-go-round giving him first, a bar of sneakers. And if you see closer V's scene, the wall is full of cell phones screens and "save me" upside-down is "I'm fine". 💜

BTS usually put their albums out in series that cover a concept or theme. This song is from their Love Yourself series which is three albums long and the albums tell an overall story. The first album is called Her and it is about a love or relationship that seems like it is destined to be. This song is a song in the second album TEAR, which is where we begin to realize that the person in this perfect relationship is starting to realise that they have been changing who they are to make the other person happy mainly because the person changing thinks, they themselves are not good enough for the other person. The last album is Answer and it is where the person realizes that they are in an unhealthy relationship with this person because they don't have a healthy relationship with themselves and that they must learn to love themselves before they can truly love and be loved in a healthy relationship. Most of their album series tell stories if you listen to them in order. Their songs can be interpreted in numerous ways and they always encourage fans and listeners to draw our own conclusions beyond their original intention behind a piece. For Fake Love, seeing how it’s part of Tear, it talks about how the person in the relationship is beginning to realise how they’ve changed themselves to fit what (they believe) their partner wants, effectively erasing themselves and putting up a façade just to keep the relationship alive. They realise how a love based on lies is fake and how both of them created something that doesn’t actually exists. In the end it ties in with the series in that not loving oneself leads people to be willing to change themselves at their core if it means people will love them, because they believe themselves to be unlovable as they are or believe they have to be a certain way to be loved.

The fake love is when you lie about who you are, to yourself and others, then any love you receive or give is fake because you are not being yourself. You can’t even have self love. Each person in their own rooms with the things they are trying to hide, their pains. In the end they allow the pain to come rushing in and learn to love themselves beyond their pain. Also many secondary clues and stories in the video that are BU references. Also almost all practical effects in the mv.

There is a storyline that runs through older BTS videos including this one. This MV is heavily influenced by the short story ‘ The ones who walk away from Omelas’ which is about a utopian society where everyone is happy and prosperous because there is a child in a room suffering for the sake of everyone else. And if anyone shows that child a shred of kindness the utopia will crumble. JK is the child. Jin wants to keep JK in the room to keep everyone else happy so he closes the curtains on him. But at the beginning V helps JK up in the dance (showing him kindness) and then the explosion in Jin’s room occurs freeing JK. Slowly he makes his way through the rooms (you can see him look in on each member), and as he does the fake realities crumble and the others have to face their original storylines. Fire, water, cell phones, chocolate bars etc all mean something to each of them. (I think Suga smiles at the fire because he knows this means JK is free. They were paired together in the original storyline). At the end Jin tries to hold on but JK frees his hand. The flower petals represent each of the boys and Jin used them to manipulate their storylines.

Even though I discovered BTS later, Fake Love is one of my favorite songs & MV. I honestly get goosebumps, it's so deep. And you are so on point with the polarity in the MV! Also, in the scene where V's phone turns to dust, the background says "save me", but you can read the font upside down and it reads "I'm fine" (BTS also has 2 songs with those titles on their album). So you can see EVERYTHING is thought out.

Not sure if you noticed by now, but at the bottom left corner at the beginning of their mv’s there’s the year/date as to when the mv came out. Just always pay attention to that. Plus it’s not just for BTS but for other k-pop artist as well. They also have behind the scene videos of their mv’s.

Singularity ties into the video. V was holding that flower that was in the container on the floor that turned to dust as Jin was trying to protect it. The Save Me on the window is another one of their songs then it turns over to show Im fine. Then the coat hangers and the guy in the mask. Plus there are several other things tied to the other video too. I love the thought process BTS put into their videos.

All props and stage set ups are detaily put together for their storylines and there are tons of symbolisms and meanings behind them (i.e. flower, key holes, mirror, fire, water falls, piano, candy bars, carnival setting, cell phone, letter "Save Me"...). Gonna second and third watching the BTS Universe! It’s kind of a lot cause it’s spread over music videos/short films they’ve done over the past few years (Fake Love included) but really cool if you guys are interested!
