Ego is one of my favorite works in BTS' whole discography and its message is something I meditate on often. It dug me out a deep, dark hole after law school and, to this day, reminds me to have faith in my ability to do right by myself. The idea of the song (that where we are is where we are) seems simple but hits hard as j-hope uses his distinct style to reassure us that we are in control of our destinies. Ego reminds us that where we are now is a result of where we’ve been and no matter how much we revisit or even regret our choices, or lament for what might-have-been, we can’t actually change any of that. The only choice we have /now/ is to take ownership of where we are, of who we are and soldier forward. Where we’ve been has ultimately made us who we are and who we are is perfectly capable of making new choices, better choices even, in our own best interest. In fact, we are the only ones perfectly situated, with all the knowledge of our history, our self, our desires, our needs, to make those choices. There was a lot of imagery that reinforced these themes: the portrayal of himself as gods from several different pantheons (self-deification also called “Egotheism”)-casting himself as the master of his own life, the road signs on the highway, even the maze and the cross walk were made out of stylized hangul reading things like "My way." Hoseok has reaffirmed his faith and trust in himself and stood for the idea that we are the leaders of our own lives several times over the years including in his Dear Class of 2020 speech and even in his lyrics throughout BTS' discography like in Whalien52. Of course, in typical Hoseok fashion, he wraps this profound message up in a dance-y, soulful beat that feels powerful and celebratory and almost reminiscent of Carnival (but maybe it just feels that way because Hoseok is the King of Brazil). But that just makes his message all the more aspirational. It's cathartic to release yourself from regret and self-flagellation and embrace your agency in your own life and destiny. Anyway...like I said, I really struggled after law school because I'd invested so much money and time and energy and I got my degree but I really hated the work and I had to restart and Ego helped me forgive myself for taking the wrong fork in my path. I got the graffiti wall from the MV tattooed on my arm and have a mural I painted of it in my office just to remind me that I'm in control and I know better than anyone what's right for me and, even if I make a mistake today, tomorrow I will know myself even more and make even better decisions on my own behalf. I'm so grateful for this song and for Hobi for writing it and bringing it to life.

Ego, the concept..Is most of the time seen as something negative, wrong.. As egocentric, egoist. But JHope had a different look on it, in a JHope way, as something good.. So the song is a celebration of your ego.. My choices, my dream, my ambition, my work, my way... No matter what their where during my lifetime, they brought me where I am. Ego is a celebration ❤

The break BTS is currently on, they planned to start back in 2020. That’s why they had such a huge release and tour planned for MOTS7 era. The pandemic changed those plans and in a way ended up progression their careers higher than they ever thought (thanks to the release of Dynamite).
