honestly a lot of their earlier stuff (especially in their first 4 albums) really have that 90s hip hop sound to it. it’s personally what makes their early sound so enjoyable for me

I recently rewatched their debut showcase and they even mentioned 90s hiphop there. They were talking about one of the showcase songs (No more dream, I think) but I think it was a big influence overall.

As someone who hit their teens in the late 90s, I think one reason Bts attracts a lot of older Americans is definitely because of that 90s vibe/nostalgia sound they have. It's nicely updated with a more modern sound and overall, Bts has a unique "bangtan style" that really sets them apart from Western artists and also Kpop artists. I think it's one reason they hit the level of fame they've reached!

Yes, the one thing that strikes me the most in the beginning of my journey in BTS rabbit hole is discovering their 90s sounds. It was a pleasant surprise! Love all their albums, but yes.. Dark & Wild remain close to my heart 💜

careful with any mnet, naver, melon, or other korean TV shows. I don't know about this performance specifically, but a lot of live korean tv performances get striked. stuff on bangtantv or the bighit main channel is almost always safe.

I really like your comments and your journey to get to know BTS. I'm 59 from the Netherlands, and discovered them by accident. I never heard from them. They don't play them here....Started with Boy with love, then searched for other songs and now I am hooked. I watch everything. The dance practices are to die for..... They inspire me. And I have a song for every occasion. Like when I am mad (not today) when I have to do something I 'm dreading (On..... You cant't keep me down cause you know I 'm a fighter ) etc.... I don't care what kind of mood I'm in, the moment this song comes on I feel so much better instantly. This is one of my favorite songs from them, I don't think I could ever get tired of hearing it, especially live. Can't stop myself from smiling the entire time, and as the song goes on the smile just gets bigger, by the time Hobi's verse ends I'm probably smiling like a complete lunatic.

First time I saw BTS perform this was on AHL - American Hustle Life. I fell for this song. I was nostalgic because I’m an older ARMY (age-wise). I loved the “Temptations” and that whole Motown scene. BTS and in particular this song gave me that vibe. It isn’t the same, but it gave me that nostalgic feeling - a familiarity with the sounds and slow sweet rhythm.

I'm also a baby ARMY (about 6 weeks old), so I just heard this song for the first time when they performed it at BangBangCon last weekend! I fell in love with it and have been listening to it quite a bit, but this was my first time seeing the English translation of the lyrics as well. It was fun going through it with a fellow baby ARMY. :) Interesting what you said about the '90s feel - it made me realize that's why I've been grooving to a lot of their older stuff - I'm an older fan (in my late 40s) and songs like "I Like It" and "No More Dream" feel like total throwbacks but somehow fresh at the same time. I think you'll really enjoy some of the other tracks on their first few albums as they have a similar vibe. Their stuff is just incredibly catchy. And then as they evolve in the later albums and explore more musical genres...it's quite the journey. Excited to see you react to more stuff! Enjoy the ride! :)

Hey Esco! I have found your channel two days ago and have binged it ALL. Just want to add my suggestions to the mix seeing as how you are going through BTSs discography from the beginning (which, great choice btw). Okay so here goes. The storyline. Please ask army not to spoil things as you journey through this bc we do get excited. However we will point out a detail you may have missed in the comments to watch for from then on. I’m saying this because the BU is largely all theories. Army have many theories as to what and where the story is taking us and why things are happening. So I really would love to see how you would theorize what you see and tell us how you interpret certain clips and themes. It’s really fun for army to watch others trying to understand the BU. There are lots of army youtubers who have very solid theories that are useful to watch as well but ONLY AFTER you have caught up. Another thing to do AFTER, is to read their online comic from Webtoon called Save Me. It reveals a lot of the in between moments we are missing from the MVs/films and answers a lot of questions. Still not everything though, they are going to release a sequel later which will further help us uncover the truth. It’s amazing visually as well. I am assuming as you go through the discography, you will be majorly focusing on the MVs and just watch them in order of release. Now this was different with “I Like It” as it was a suggested song and you watched the live version AND it was in the same and relevant era. That’s awesome. Go through the eras how you like, but my main point is this: save the MVs/films (i will list them below) related to the BU, and put them aside for a time you are ready to dive in. The best time to dive in is when you can confidently recognize the members by their faces because their relationships w/ each other in the BU is SO SO important. Now, I wouldn’t suggest going through all of BTSs songs until present and THEN diving in. literally dive in as soon as you can. and don’t watch any other bts videos in between them. (unless it’s your discovering bts series or a crack video or a get to know type thing). Okay now that it’s out there, I will present the list of videos in order of what to watch. The thing with these videos is that there may be different versions of the mv and there are some where they will be speaking in Korean and there will be no translation. So it is important to watch the right one, and to find the videos where army have added the english subtitles. I would love to link everything for you here but my fingers are about to fall off from texting and i’m on my phone 🤷🏻‍♀️. This is where showing this comment on your Discovering BTS video would help bc fellow army can help me out with linking the correct ones, and if they don’t, i will reply to this comment with the links. [you can combine all 3 fake love vids into one video if you’d like] and finally Webtoon - It’s a crazy amount but it’s such a wonderful journey so while I know you want to get familiar with their older stuff, the moment you recognize the members, start the BU!! it covers a lot of their main songs from their discography anyway. What’s also crazy is that their albums all come with a little booklet called “The Notes” and it’s like diary entries from BTSs fictional characters that coincide with the BU. They fit in between the videos i have listed above but it’s not required to grasp the overall picture. Theory videos should cover them for you. Hope you have fun theorizing with us!

You’ll notice this reaccuring theme with BTS that a lot of their songs will have a nice, upbeat and smooth feel while their lyrics are usually far from happy go-lucky stuff haha it makes you do a hard double take when reading the lyrics. I love this song and didn’t actually know what they were saying so knowing it was about them feeling clingy and a bitter like resentment towards an ex is too funny to me.

We don't say that the songs are great because BTS only has great songs. I love every song they've put out, and picking a favourite is impossible. We tend to choose the song that we're feeling in the moment, but there's no misses with BTS. Every time they had put out an album, I was worried that I wouldn't like it, because they've been so great for so long, why don't they make a bad song? The more I listen, I realise that BTS doesn't have a bad song, because it's straight from them, and you can't really criticise a point of view. And it happens that I like looking at the world through their eyes.

This is one of their most chill and relaxed songs. Their next album is called skool luv affair (2014) and you NEED to check out Boy in Luv, Tomorrow, Cypher Part 2 and Jump. Those four are my absolute favourites. Boy in Luv is kind of like a high school crush song but I have a feeling you are going to love it. The cypher pt2 is a part of their cypher series (pt1-4) and it goes HARD. Anyways always love your reactions. Can’t wait to see more!

Of all the songs that they have released over the last seven years, "I Like It" is in my top 3 songs from them. And like you it's because it does give me a 90's feel...i believe this a few other songs from them got the older ARMY attention, and then they just pulled us completely in from there...I am 47 y.o. and this song makes me feel 17 again.
