I’m 66 years old and I’ve been ARMY for over a year. I’ve donated to many causes because of BTS. My husband and saw them in one of their recent LA concerts. Before BTS, I never listened to much music and artists from my era. I’m glad I found BTS. They’ve really helped me through the pandemic. And their talent is so over the top. They can do it all and there are no egos in the group. Everyone gets to shine. So glad you found them. Or they found you. 😉

Regarding the accessibility comment you made, I wanted to point out that US fans did not initially have accessibility to BTS in terms of ways that could get them charting on Billboard and breaking all those records. It was truly a grassroots effort by ARMY across the Globe with the underlying goal to simply share BTS' music and message. That, in essence, forced America to give fans the accessibility. ARMYs posted flyers and left little business & post cards advertising BTS, some with QR codes. They continuously requested BTS songs on the radio and oftentimes would shower DJs with gifts like flowers and sweets although for the most part (as you saw in the video) ARMYs were ignored and/or made fun off. One DJ even joked about cupcakes from ARMYs possibly being poisoned. ARMYs bombarded stores like Target urging them to contact HYBE (formerly BigHit) to import BTS albums. It was not easy but they stayed the course and prevailed. I was not part of the fandom during that time but every ARMY eventually learns the history and all I have is absolute respect for those who came before me.

@Sasha, yes it seems like that the American DJs would say who is BTS ?and why should we play their song? They are not American artists! They are very rude very disrespectful! The song” Mic Drop” when it was first getting recognition in the United States through talk shows, when BTS were guest and perform the song , I only heard it once played on my radio station! Kpop songs that I request many times to my local radio stations that play only American Pop music ! They would laugh and say it’s not in English, people are not going to listen! The radio stations were more about their popularity and whether or not they could get their listeners to tune in and listen to BTS or other K-pop artist. Through ARMYS hard work we have actually accomplished a lot now that I listen still to my radio stations I noticed that they’re playing other K-pop artist for instance MONSTA X has an English album and they’ve been playing a lot of the songs from both their English albums! But only English Songs !🤦🏻♀️ now I think that Spanish radio stations won’t play Kpop songs I know because my friend who is a Cuban American asked many times for the Latin radio stations to play BTS and they Won’t! ARMYS we still have our work cut out for us because if Despacito can get hundreds of thousands of spins that is mostly a Spanish song than BTS ‘s Korean songs should be also included as well as any other language songs that are popular! “Life goes on“ was always a concern to me because it was in partially English but mostly in Korean and the racism and xenophobia that these radio stations are, only want to get their popularity boost not just the artist! We still have work to do ARMYS!!!💜

MUCH respect to the ARMYs who helped elevate BTS in the US/worldwide with those grassroots campaigns in the early days. I can’t imagine the dedication and thick-skin it took back then. Even now in 2022 with all the success, exposure, and shattered records, the prejudice and criticism of BTS by people who don’t care to know them is so harsh. I know we have them and they have us, but they truly deserve 1000% more respect than they’re shown. Even if the BTS genre (not the Kpop genre- they are NOT the same) isn’t your cup of tea, the grind and passion is to be respected.
@laurahilliker53362 жыл бұрын
@Jeannie, yes I understand BTS is not considered K-pop anymore because they have expanded out into their own genre! Technically K-pop is not a genre it’s a Industry! Iam fully aware but I was just speaking basic overall in a conversation not as a description of who BTS is. I should’ve been more descriptive when it comes to describing BTS. the genre of music I was just telling my story what I have to go through as a listener of both BTS, K-pop and American popular music in order to get anything on the radio I myself have to fight every day when I go and make a request online through my radio station and try to open up peoples hearts and minds to who BTS is! The throw negativity that people who are not familiar with BTS or don’t want to be familiar like certain family members of mine and friends who outrightly confuse North Korea and South Korea and make jokes and say that BTS and Kim Jong un are one in the same! BTS is why their message is so important not just on their music but as a serious social issue platform! 2022 is the year of the Tiger and BTS will continue to evolve make music and most likely serve mandatory military service! Now that the American artists know about BTS they want to collaborate with BTS but it took so many years for them to work hard and struggle and the Fanbase has equally been there working side-by-side and struggling to get BTS heard on the radio recognized as important artist with a message of “Love Yourself” that is unlike any other western artists haven’t put out there! Kim Nam Joon our leader of BTS, spoke those words at the United Nations General assembly in 2018 for the love myself speak yourself campaign with UNICEF! I tried to show that to my family to let them know that they’re more than just a seven member boy band from South Korea! Fighting!💜 BoraHae 💜

I’ve been ARMY since 2017 and Joined BTSxTexas on Twitter and shortly after on their grassroots efforts. I remember going to Starbucks & similar places and asking if I could leave the cards we had created (“Do You Know BTS?” Taking a page out of WWH Jin 😝) on their boards. Some would say yes, others no, others would look at me and say “aren’t you a little old for a boyband?” 😑 A DJ at our local radio station told one of our members to stop calling because so long as he was the program director we would never hear BTS on that station. He left her in tears. Personally, I could care less about their prejudices. BTS is worth it all: great musicians, amazing lyricists, exceptional dancers BUT above all, good, caring, thoughtful human beings. So to see how far they’ve come and continue to climb is a personal badge of honor and worth all the hate and unnecessary cheap-shots they threw and continue to throw at ARMY. The more they hate the harder we work. Haters gonna hate. 🤷🏻♀️ but as YoonGi once said: Love Yourself, Love Myself, Peace ✌🏼 💜

17:55 "They seem like they really... love...us"... That's exactly the reason why many of us became so attached and devoted to these "7 normal boys from Korea". There's a saying in the fandom, "Falling for BTS wasn't like falling at all. It was like walking into a house, and knowing you're home." The amount of love I felt, I never knew I had been yearning for. You just "feel" loved. That's the simplest way one can phrase it. We travel the world in hopes of finding someplace we can call our own... And it's not an exaggeration when I say that BTS and ARMY did make me feel like I belonged... Finally...a place I feel loved at. Finally...a place I could call home. 💜

When armies say "bts save them" I really can't relate cuz I'm not an emotional person (not that I don't show emotions just when needed). I am very headstrong and very principled my Dad made sure to install that in us but the real world people find me difficult to manipulate or walk over ( convince me that your opinions or methods are the best and not the lesser evil) so I usually face hostility You call people like me a "non-conformist", it got to a stage where I started telling myself maybe I should pipe down my survival should be more important than my "views or principles" ( 2021 I was ready to change myself or at least pretend till I can be at that position I was told live will get easier) but bts and armies came just in time 4th of January I saw Tae and JK picture and recognize Tae from a drama I watched 2018 so looked into him then I found out he was a singer in a group called bts by 7th I had known so much about Tae but nothing about music so that day I finally searched who is bts and after 5 songs 2 lives 12 reaction videos and hours on YT comment sections (at that point I knew I was in the hole). Long story short, what I felt after finding bts and the army was a sense of belonging and understanding, I should not stop being me cuz some people can't stand it, I should not care if people call me arrogant or when they tell me to stop trying to stand up for people I know don't understand that our been harmed or used ( the word exact is "God complex", behaving as if I'm better and you can't find fault in me) that is the way I was described even if that was not true. The world needs to understand that bc one doesn't show feelings doesn't mean one doesn't have their shadows to deal with. edit: After reading this myself it does sound as if I was saved not from pain or depression or suicide but from conforming, losing myself so to speak.

It was also extremely reassuring coz I was at that time 25 and felt like I d be judged for attending such a movie...but nobody looked weridly at me and I actually sat next to a guy in his 40s. Oddly, I wasn't even that worried that she was missing in a crowed of 60k people, because everyone was so amazing and immediately started helping me look for her, and those around her started helping her look for me. I knew we would find each other and she would be protected until we did..and I was right.

I get the accessibility to those numbers, but to imagine "being" The Beatles of the contemporary is impressive on itself because it now getting hard to standout from the rest because of the overwhelming competition from different artists and their fanbases. It has also said that the digital sales have become more popular than the physical sales, but BTS still managed to have the best-selling physical album of the year. Not even talking about the fact that they are from Korea which their discography is largely Korean able to take over the world. Another thing, the K-pop industry itself already is an overwhelming competition, but to even arrive and standout even in the American pop industry is definitely impressive.

If all your encounters with the fandom was negative u would automatically generalize the entire fandom. It's human nature. Negativity always stands out no matter how much positivity also exist. However it's important to realise this is maybe 1-2% of the fandom. It is impossible for millions of people to all be the same. If u ever get to a point where the toxics come to harrass u on your channel do keep this in mind.

I haven't met all these people but the exciting love reaction when we see or hear another ARMY who we don't personally know or when one ARMY achieves something and we're proud of them or when one ARMY calls out for help and we're immediately there, when an ARMY strays away from what our boys stand for, we call them out and scold them if we have to, and when media or someone insult us or our boys, we immediately turn into our Avengers' mode. Regarding the difference between access to music before and now, I think we also have to acknowledge that yes people back then didn't have much access. Which means they most likely will only know songs that are being fed to them by the radio. Otherwise, it would be difficult for them to discover small artists. Which is why I think BTS's achievements are remarkable, bcs ppl today can choose to listen to whoever they want. They have access to listen to almost all music available in the world. Yet millions still chose to listen to BTS and get to know them and stay loyal to them, and I think that says a lot about their music and who they are. Idk that has always been my perspective.

We Americans are in our own little bubbles. I think there is a little of (How good could BTS possibly be) in all of us? And we also don't like to be told what to like. Honestly, my sister was talking about BTS for years and I would roll my eyes. One day on my FOR YOU PAGE a video popped up, I watched it. I was like, who's this? They are incredible and BAM!!! it was BTS. Then I double checked myself because; one video doesn't make a band great. Again, my mind, they can't be that good. It was a fluke. How many albums have I bought, only to find 1 song on the whole album that was any good. I Watched another video. Stunned to say the least. It was great too. I immediately wanted to check out more. I felt bad that I had been so dismissive towards my sister who had pitched them to me several times. I could have had this feeling of BTS earlier but I was stuck in my own head, that they were just another boy band. But quickly it hit me after a few videos, they were NOT just a boy band. They were another level. They are better and I could see why people were raving about how great they are.

This is the first time I've admitted I'm 60, and getting ready to retire from USPS.... in Columbus, Ohio (😮😉). I'm guessing the "over 50 demographic" is much stronger than the stats show. We may have felt weird about it once but we're coming out now 🙃

I agree. I was trying to prove a point to a friend, so I've been screenshot-ing any and all comments of Army over 55 and editing them to not show names or pictures and putting them together to show just in comments how many army over 55 there really are and I think 5he numbers on the statistics show are definitely lower than what there actually is.

At some point I realized that this group and fandom really changed me for the better. It may sound like a cheap saying - but I can see that I've become a person that is a lot more kind to herself and a lot more open to others, and that I started informing myself about and helping people in areas I wouldn't have before. I've become a better person, I think, and I can't thank them enough for that. Thank you for your reactions, they're amazing and really cheer me up! :)

Also, in the vlives they have as many as 10 million people tune in with no notice. That’s something like 1 in every 700 people on the entire planet drops what they are doing to watch/listen to BTS members chat about their day, what’s on their mind, sing, make salad…. It’s amazing. I don’t think they could have that kind of pull if they weren’t doing what they are doing out of love and really believe in it. Love for each other, for their fans, for music, for themselves. We love them.

The ARMY is truly an amazing fandom. One in An Army organizes so many charity projects to go with different events like the members' birthdays, the band's birthday, etc. BTS themselves usually donate to a lot of causes and they don't really tell the world about it. People just find out when some news outlets find out and tell us about it. This is such a beautiful fandom to be part of. Even small things like at the PTD LA concert, when things started to get disorganized near starting time, it was ARMY who kept themselves in line, showing others where to go and not causing a ruckus, in general they were very organized. After the concert, ARMY volunteers were directing traffic outside with their army bombs to keep things flowing smoothly.

the reason a lot of western countries don't know about BTS on a big scale or only have been starting to know about them is because the media in said countries cultivates, regulates and dominates what we consume. xCeleste mentioned radio play in this video. Radio stations decide themselves what they wanna play and often times managements pay them to play their artist's music more. Hybe doesn't do payola, which is why it is Army's sole power of persistence and MASS that gets them to the top of the charts. Which doesn't sit well with the industry, because just recently Billboard has changed the rules for topping the charts AGAIN ever since BTS has been dominating. Just like the Grammys loves to use them for views but diminishes their efforts and gives it to whoever white person is in the same category. It is very blatant racism and xenophobia that prevails the music industry as much as it does Hollywood and "white" countries in general. Only after Coldplay featured with BTS and only after BTS put out english music did it show up on US radio or in Germany. As much as we wanna claim we're progressive, we still have a long way to go.

These are so many different and these fans are the ones who are the "professional" ones who upped their "responsibility" to even get to the point where they help other people because of being wholly inspired by the band's message. They are so inspiring themselves as well and impressive. I am so jealous of them because I can not do what they can do when we support the same artist. The best thing I can do is to help myself to be more motivated and get inspired to reach my dreams and be myself. [BTS tells me so!] This is why it is important to not to stereotype groups and fandoms, every group and fandom has those illogical, hypocritical, delusional, and tolerant fans, in which, the dedicated helpful and open-minded fans are being grouped as one with them. It just unfair for them to be insulted for something they never displayed, is it not?

In any case, I, coming from a non native English speaking country, am super used to hear English tracks on the radio apart from the native language the country I live in... And when I was a child I didn't realized so I grew up (everyone around me) just listening to music and learning about the content (lyrics) later. Until in the 90s I was mesmerized by Japanese rock and I started using ebay and websites and p2p systems to be able to consume it. So that's a huge minus for people who grow up entitled to their language as it should be the only one/universal, not talking about you guys! just a general thought I've been mulling for over 20 years lol, the sad part is... after 20+ years, the situation hasn't changed a tiny bit. :(

'Life Goes On' was released Nov. 19, 2020. It was co-written by RM, Suga and J-Hope to offer healing and comfort to everyone affected by the pandemic. Jin summed up the essence of the song in one line "The world seems to have stopped, but life will go on: Life Goes On." Jungkook directed the mv. Highly recommended. I'm only saying this because you've said in past reactions that you 'got so into the music you forgot to read the lyrics'. You need read the lyrics for this one. This song is all about the lyrics. So if you have to, watch it twice. One for the visuals/music, the other for the lyrics. Trust me, we won't mind if you watch it twice.

The radio and army do NOT get along, despacito played non stop, meanwhile BTS songs (only the English singles) barely get spins. Armys have gone and asked and they always get refused, it’s crazy. Regarding the Beatles and the records, there is a lot more accessibility but at the same time if there is so much then how come no other group/artist even came close? Like the video says BTS just has a huge fan base and people really line up for their message. It’s well deserved

I just hope you know that the majority watching are really enjoying this journey of yours and we're happy you're here! A song I think you'd really enjoy is: Tomorrow ! MCA you've mentioned how your own friends and family react to your listening to BTS during your lives. Curious as to why you think there is such a stigma - like you said we heard Despacito nonstop on the radio. ARMY formed out of love for BTS but we didn't know we were getting involved with whole social discrimination and being called toxic by media, and general public rolling their eyes. The playing field is NOT level. ARMY focuses on BTS and their positivity, practices kindness, and yes we are wary of clout chasers because it's all about respect. But I cannot understand why some people don't give BTS a chance. As you've seen BTS are so diverse I'm sure there's something everyone would enjoy. Thank you for giving them a chance 😊💜
