I grew up in Pasadena TX and was in high school when they were filming the movie urban cowboy. Gillis was a mile from my house! I went to school with the son of the people who owned the house that was used in the movie (Travoltas characters uncles house in the movie)They had to wait to move in after the film crew left. I knew several of the extras in the movie. It was really weird seeing my home town in the movie theater when it first was released. The diner in the movie was my parents favorite diner. I never got to actually meet John Travolta or the other main actors as they just had too much security. But it was amazing watching it be filmed. I learned alot about how they make movies and you be amazed at how it's kinda boring to watch! Lol! Its alot of retakes and methodical staging. It's cool that it put my home town on the map!

The creases applied to the hats are the modern taco style that has a wide flat brim in front with sharp angles as the brim goes vertical. Whereas the vintage hats worn in "Urban Cowboy", Richard Petty, and the other examples in this video used a smoothly curved front brim and didn't have as aggressive upright sides.

That was cool to see.. Plus I seen an interview with Travolta or Patrick swayze and. Swayzes mom waa the choreographer for urban cowboy. And Patrick swayze wouldbe teaching the extras how to 2 step and other dances while his mom would be teaching the stars of the movie their dances.. Plus opening song is Charlie Daniels. Love this movie. Thanks for showing it some love..

Nobody did that severe brim bend angle back then. We did the brims with a smooth graceful transition. It takes more skill to do 'em graceful.

I love Fifties style Western hats... I used to work for a Hatter in Houston in the Eighties... The old guys there taught me how to shape the best damn Horseshoe Crease I've ever seen 😁 They taught me to always start out with a tall crown hat, so there's enough material to get the horseshoe or DOUBLE HORSESHOE out of it. Something else that always got me (especially back in the Eighties) was cutting down the width of a brim...🙄 But I guess that was "the style" back at the time.

Not everyone loved that movie, including me. We called those old boys Drug Store Cowboys. Bull-riders from that time did not wear a hat shaped like that. They were more opened brimmed, not turned up like that. And the shape of the top, really is wrong. Look at Larry Mahan or Donny Gay's hats, that was the hat shape from then. That style that Travolta was more of a bull-dogger hat, but not quite. I think I didn't like the movie so much because I knew J. Travolta was in that disco movie, and I really hated that thing, had an old gal to talk me into going to see it, man I was ready to leave in the first 5 minutes, but hey, she was a good looking old gal, so I toughed it out. And those feathered headbands back then, gosh awful things. I remember Mickey Gilley wore them, as did a few others, and the guys that I was around the rodeo arenas hated those feathered bands too, something a goat roper would wear on his hat. About this time too, a transition from wearing Levi's to Wrangler blue jeans was on the rise. Me and some of the other fellas still wore stove-pipe Levi's, and then in a few years, they laughed at us. I remember Larry Mahan had a line of clothes, some of the wildest western shirts back then. Donny Gay used to have a clothes store in Norman, Oklahoma, I used to go in there often, met him many times. I grew up admiring Jim Shoulders.

Nothing wrong with Levi's. I never did like Wrangler's.

@@asanmartinjr07 - I still wear Levi's. When that book "Real Men Don't Eat Quiche" came out about 1981 or '82, one of my aunts said "A real man'll eat whatever he damn well wants to." I think the same applies to what jeans he wears, vehicle he drives, brand of beer he drinks, any of that stuff. I got more to do than worry about other peoples' business.
