The cost answer depends on greed. Quality? Prevention? Non profit? Or speculators taking over? Those prices were way inflated compared to actual cost. The houses were not made of gold. But some were historic. Left alone mostly. Many though modern teardowns anyway. So no freat loss.

I could be wrong. However if they dump the water from the reservoir it makes sense the hydrants don't have water but the houses still have warer

A little history lesson the Palisades were built-in the 1920s. Each one story house was sold for between $5000 and 6000, only to modest income families. Over the years, they have been handed down to their children, And those children added another level. The homes that sold were leveled and investors built 3 story homes, and modern exteriors. Only recently, Insurance companies won't ensure people there, That's where "CA Fair Plan" comes in. People who can't get home insurance have decided to use the "fire defensible space" concept, and building styles, that the LAFD had implemented. Those residents that changed their 5' perimeter landscaping didn't lose their home. Now, go back & look and compare those landscapes.

The human tragedy is the real story here. Each one of those houses represents a family whose lives are changed forever. Many will never recover. If you house survived its now worth 1/2 of the pre fire value until the neighborhoods are rebuilt over the next 5-10 years.

I think the observations of the commenters are right. These houses, while expensive and probably looking nice before the fire, were cheaply made. At the price those houses cost, they should have been built with the same materials as their chimney smoke stacks that survived the blaze. Stone, brick, concrete, and treated wood would have helped these houses withstand the flying embers. I've noticed a lot of Southwest houses look like this too; they look different and exotic compared to houses in the North, Midwest, and Northeast houses particularly the older cul-de-sac houses that are fully bricked. If those LA suburb homes are ever rebuilt, hopefully, they will get builders who won't cut corners on materials and charge exorbitant amounts. The cost of those homes should actually reflect the materials used to build them so they can withstand fires.

Water run out momentarily when power was cut off to prevent downed power line starting more fires. Pressure left is from gravity. But, the reservior serving the Palisades being dry was just criminal.

The excess amount of water used by the residents and broken water lines only put a slight strain on the water system. The fact is 3 reservoirs ran dry at 1am, 2am, and 3am and the main reservoir was already dry, that also feeds the other 3 reservoirs that went dry. The water systems are gravity fed, but when you run out of water, there’s nothing left till water is transferred. This was all negligence on the LADWP not repairing the main 117 million gallon reservoir and it’s on record showing the cost of repairs to the main reservoir was only $100,000 and needing to be out of commission for repairs to a liner for 1 month, but instead it has been offline for a year. After 3am the hydrants did in fact go dry, meaning no water was coming out of the hoses. Documented were LAFD fire fighters using pumps in pools to fight the fires and put water into water tenders trucks from pools to be pumped to multiple fire trucks so crews could have water to fight the fires. It wasn’t for another 2 hours that LADWP was able to transfer water to the area from other outside reservoirs to the Palisades reservoirs and this is why you now see water in the area running down the street and water coming out of pipes. To also debunk the water pressure theory in the Palisades that gets publicize, is that in Altadena there were hundreds that also needed to evacuate as well and there too was a lot residents that used hoses and sprinklers on their homes left running. There was also hundreds of homes and businesses that were also completely burned down where water was flowing uncontrolled as well. During the time the city of Altadena was on fire, not 1 hydrant went dry nor was there not enough pressure in the system for the fire crews to fight the fires with their hoses. I have friends that live in Altadena that lost their homes and if you live in that area of the Palisades and lost your home, I’m sorry and really hope things get better for all.

Man you are not treating the tap water, wow ,that’s unbelievable! You go all the way in the opposite direction of the cash flow. Nowadays is all so complicated it’s crazy and all about money unfortunately. My tap waters tds is 71 but I use ro only around 9-11 tds. The fluoride is out and chlorine and most minerals. At least use some treatment to take the chlorine out. I guess being 25 plus years you got tired of the hobby.

The question isn't what it would cost, but how much you paid to ensure this happened! And there must be no question, on whether you and your city and/or state should ALONE pay for whatever rebuilding. This is YOUR delicious cake, that YOU insisted upon all the ingredients necessary to bake it.

Wind + Fire is the real culprit. Not just fire. And the red tape is good, so maybe next time the houses will be fireproofed.
