Ted Fordham was a stay in the goal square player , with a close attender, who had an uncanny way to get to the ball first, and his baulk usually ensured he took the mark. Usually, because he ventured so little distance from the goals, that mark became a goal. He was quite deadly from close range. I saw him knock up a large quantity of goals at Victoria Park one afternoon in fine conditions. A premiership full forward, with a great array of talent in that grand final. I remember Baldock as the first magician.

I can see a little bit of Coleman's coaching in Fordham's play.

Footy was such a wonderful game before the AFL transformed from a sporting competition into an entertainment business. Before profit was the objective. Before all the player theatrics, after scoring a goal, became a part of the footballers repertoire.

That was not Dustin Fletcher but Hugh Mitchell. Fletcher belonged to a later era.

@JG-bw6lu Soccer lacks one important feature that Australian football has. Excitement! Soccer is a game for armless men. My father was a European immigrant who talked about soccer as the "world game." It only took him seeing one game of Aussie Rules live for him to become an instant convert. He never mentioned the "world game " ever again. My father was an intelligent sports fan. Soccer will be Australia's number 1 sport by 2050 ? Mate, you suffer from serious delusion. Australia will not forsake the greatest game on earth for a boring sport like soccer.

The Saints were favoured to win this one. They redeemed themselves in '66. And I wouldn't define Baldock as mercurial. He was a consistently good player for the Saints.

I'm a Bomber fan, but Baldock was brilliant. A masterful ball handler.
