@@MisterPolitical1 Kennedy won it in 1961, 1971 & 1976.....Jeans in 1966, 1983, 1986 & 1989. That's 14 Grand Finals for 7 Premierships between them.....Jeans is still the only Saints Premiership coach....The ledger is square I'd say.

I was there to see my mighty Hawks win their second premiership, the only one I have witnessed. What a great day it was They now have 13.

A highly under rated sport, I was 8 years old when we moved to Melbourne from New Zealand in April 1966. fell in love with the game at school and chose the Saints to support. that year they won their first and only premiership. Being allowed to go games by train on Saturdays with mates was my parents showing trust in me. Been back in Kiwi land since 1976, seems the Saints need their numero supporter back to win. I played center half forward for Nunawading.

I hope someone picks up Robert Dickson's work and continues making these Grand Final stories as I think they are great and important documentaries of the game's history.

Agreed. I reckon 1997, 2005, 2009 and 2018 would make for great documentaries.

One of the greatest games ever played. Les Hawken and Bob Murray were both unlucky, Hawken carried an injury into the game and had to go off really early. Murray stuck it out for ages which is testament to his courage. Poor old Kevin Heath got flattened and the Herald Sun showed a pic of him being attended to by the trainers, but they said he was Leigh Matthews! I always say if you want to watch something exciting and inspirational, watch this game of footy. But it's great to see some footage of the rooms afterwards in this doco. Scotty was absolutely spent, you'd never have known how much he gave from watching the game footage alone.

Don Scott probably inspired and motivated the rest of the Hawthorn players and they all lifted I've watched the final quarter of the 1971 Grand Final many times and from the moment that Leigh Matthews kicked that first goal All the Hawthorn players lifted!🙂🎽🏉🏟️

The toughest footballers to play the game, in my opinion. Although I was too young to remember this game, I have supported the Hawks from the 70s to present day as a current member, and personally played a lot of football throughout the 80s and to watch this doco was yet another eye opener to just how hard, passionate and skilled these players were. By no doubt the current game is littered with incredibly talented and elite athletes who are still a pleasure to watch, but it certainly has changed in many respects. I’m grateful to now live a few minutes walk to Glenferrie Oval and where lucky to meet Peter Hudson recently at a lunch here, and to this day he remains one of the most humble and inspiring gentlemen one can meet. Great video and to all involved in that era, be proud of the foundation you set for what is now a hugely successful national competition.

Peter Hudson is the GOAT of full forwards because he could kick goals when he was semi concussed. Most full forwards today couldn’t kick straight at full health.

When he was interviewed about not kicking that goal in 100 years of Australian football, I expected Hudson to be so bitter and pissed off. He just laughed, shrugged his soldiers and said “oh well, I guess it’s the way it goes!”

Peter Hudson averaged over 5 goals per game between 1967 to 1971 and he even kicked 110 goals in 1977 after being out of the VFL due to knee injuries. Four Coleman Medals (1968, 1970, 1971, 1977) 129 games 727 goals. The Hawks had three of the the league’s best coaches in John Kennedy(1960-63, 1967-76), David Parkin(1977-1980), and Allan Jeans(1981-1987, 1989-90).
