Great lady very inspirational. Am autistic and I get what she means about scratchy clothes that's a big problem for me. A long with loud noises and touch she is definitely one of my idols.

I've just bought one of Dr. Grandin's books and can't wait to dive in. She's such a wonderful speaker and breaks autism down to such an approachable level. It stops being a scary clinical diagnosis, the way she explains it. Thanks for the video! :)

Temple is a literal thinker, The "tents" at DIA (8:54) are not viewed as a representation of a mountain range in her mind. Though even neuro typicals have to be told that the "tents" are mountains before making the connection.

where's the rest of this speech? there is no single cause for autism, haven't you been listening to what she is saying? It's a vast spectrum. Stands to reason causes are different too... -_- Reading one article is nowhere close to enough.

I'm starting to wonder if Autism is in fact not an "illness", but perhaps the side-effect of a genetic mutation within the human DNA...?

Mark Donald "i read it is actually to do with an insufficient amount of oxygen getting to certain parts of the brain for development as a fetus." The hell did you read THAT? o_O

Its a brain disorder, a non typical wiring of the brain. Its not an illness, illness has a cure. Not autism.

Autism is a brain/neurological disorder. As Grandin explains, there is not only a wide spectrum of expression of this condition, but lots of overlap w/other neurological conditions. Some neurological disorders fit more neatly into the parameters of the definitions of disease (e.g. those where dopamine and other neurological transmitters bombard areas of the brain - degrading brain function over time) others - not so much.

Autism is not a disease. Autism is just a different way of thinking. unfortunately our education healthcare and legal system is not designed with our brain in mind. I taught myself all six UN languages, Portuguese, Xhosa, Zulu, Afrikaans, published eight books, won the state of New Jersey in geography and taught myself international and regional instruments of human rights/humanitarian law I got my masters in international human rights from Queens University Belfast and I work at teh International Criminal Court fuck autism
