Bubble Tip Anemones - What you need to know

Discussing the various needs of this species of anemones should help you keep one (or more) healthy in your reef for many years to come. The original BTA was purchased back in 2002 and is with me to this day, and the original Rose BTA was acquired in 2007. I've seen all the fun things they do, including splitting, spawning, climbing everywhere - and of course hosting happy clownfish around the clock. Here are some links to previous BTA vidoes:

The bubbles go away because of flow.. high flow stretches the tentacles, low flow will keep them bubbly 👍🏼

not exactly correct, mine was bubbled when bought then around 5 months become fairly and last 4 month that clown hosting it become bubble again for no reason nothing changed in the tank

I can attest to this theory, I ramped up a powerhead 1k gph and my BTA lost its bulbs and when I lowered the flow to 750 gph it regained its bulbs.

This makes total sense. If the flow is low, they inflate (bubbles) to help keep their tentacles up and flowing.

My clowns hosted after showing them videos on my phone. It happened over night. I propped the phone up and started a playlist. The list of videos I picked were clowns that looked like mine, hosting an anenome that looked like mine. I ran about an hour of videos. They reacted to the video. Moving away and watching. Then they showed interest in the anemone. The next day they were hosting.

Hey, almost all my bubble tip anemones keep their bubbles and I have around 40 anemones in the tank. Moderate current, moderate lighting, 10 ppm of nitrates, .1-2 phosphates, lots of fish and its mostly a softie/lps tank. 350 gallons.

I believe when bta is stretched instead of bubbled they're looking for food or light. if I keep mine fed well it stays bubbly when it gets hungry it seems to start stretching

Hi Melevsreef, I love your videos and they are very informational and I have similar story how I got into saltwater tank. I had 10 gallon freshwater tank and I bought few fishes from petco and fishes died and I took them back to store for credit and I started asking questions for saltwater 12 gallon bio cube they had in the store from one of the workers in that department and he said I can't keep freshwater fish alive I should not think about saltwater.. It felt bad and I kind of took that as a challenge and I started 30 gallon tank with live rock now I own 250 gallon display with 2 - 75 gallons sumps and 40 gallon frag tank and best part is that whole setup is built by me and buddy of mine with plywood..

Hey Man! Cool video. I have had the same experience with Anemones than you. I wanted to drop you a line because people do actually know about bubble expression in BTAs and honestly, its pretty easy to find. Basically, the brighter the light, the more bubbles they will express while the deeper and darker, the longer and less bubbly the nem.

Enjoy your vids; thanks for all the info. I believe the answer to your question regarding, long and stretched v. bulbous is there is a bit too much light. They bubble, adding more surface area, to compensate for lower light and lower photosynthesis.

Great video dude and Awesome Tank! I was a bit worry with mine because Ive been staying away from them but I received a Rose BTA on a trade that couldn't resist and placed her on one of my tanks... People kept saying that if the BTA dies can kill the entire system and that worried me and also the fact that she can sting other corals. But I plan on redistributing some of the corals to give her space I think she is got the spot and the female Ocellaris has been quite curious staying in front of it.. it is small at this time so that's why I am assuming that will do fine for some time on the 65G tank, i've been feeding her with Frozen (Bryne Shrimp, Mysis and Phytoplankton) for a couple of weeks now but will go and get the Big Shrimp to slice a piece as you recommended. I am still hesitant to put her on the 100G Display, but I am impressed on how well you keep anemones on REEF Tank, I guess the Key it is as the mayor part on this hobby "Observation" and some Risks..., :D thanks a lot again for sharing, info videos like this is what encourage people to stay active on this hobby and hey off course the entire video I kept looking the background trying to get a look at the Tank, so I vote for the including of quick video updates of your display every time..

melevsreef Just got my first White Carpet Anemone. I got it 5-22-2015 Getting a Maroon Clownfish tomorrow to go with it ... It has got really big and seems to like its spot it went from 3 inch when it came and is now 9 inchs maybe a foot around.. and everyone is telling me to take it out and put in hosp tank.. It is doing great and it is in a tank that has been up for 6 years almost .. then I have another one yelling at me that I am getting a Maroon Clownfish to go in it .. saying that it wont host in it but yet I see them in them all the time .. . Stuff like that . And telling me my Carpet Anemone is going to die.. . I have lots of things in my tank that are expert only fish and I have not lost one yet .. Love your movie will be looking to here more .. I got a rose bubble and clowns killed it that is why I am getting a carpet

Julie Kenney Maroon clownfish are hard on anemones, period. Carpet anemones aren't a good choice for that species of clown. Have you checked the compatibility charts? It's possible for an odd pairing, but I would aim for what is know to go together. I have the exact same sizes and quantities of those same anemones as you do in my 75 gallon reef. I started with two a few years ago. I use two T5 HO lamps on my tank. I also have two clownfish that live in them. I see bubble tips on them every once in a while when they shrink down. Our stories are very similar.

I added my first BTA to my 120 gal SW tank. You were just the person I needed to hear. I did not know what signs to look for when he poops. I thought maybe it was something bad, but in every other way he looks great and has a beautiful florescent green glow about him. He found a spot in a cavernous area where the water has the circulation he was looking for I guess. He can go into his cavern from the back or the front of the reef. I look forward to more of your videos.

I have got 3 different anemones, from my friends tank. In his tank, they were long tentacles. In my tank, they are stunning Bubble tips. The only thing i put it to, is hi intensity Halide lighting. Bubble tips loose there swelling due to lack of algae in the water. Its the water changes &/or the skimmer. They swell as they absorb free floating algae from the water. #water type pokemon master FTW

Kaul Watson I find this super hard to believe. I have five bubble tips and they are as massive as the ones in his tank. I also have a huge green hair algae problem. I've been removing it for the past year or so. There has never been a shortage of algae in my tank.

If you Bubble Tips are swollen then it is possible they have all ready taken in as much algea as thay can. If they are not swollen then your water would be very clean with no floating algea in the water for the the Bubble Tips asorb.

The tentacles stretch out and lose the bubbles when they are hungry and or don't have adequate lighting. Feed them or increase the lights and the tentacles should retract back and regain the bubble tips.

Robin Haselden I find that hard to believe. I feed mine all the time and they still remain stretched out. They even refuse food at times when they're stringy lie that. And my lighting is way more than enough for my tank.

Lies.. No one knows why they lose and form bubbles in the tips not even scientists, just a bunch of theories. I've seen them in low flow/light and high flow/light with bulbs and in pristine clean tanks and dirty tanks with and without bulbs on their tips.

I have my black widows splitting a lot on me with very stable water parameters 😀. I started with one like 3 years back and had over 30 so far (sold some of course) I even got a nano cube to be like an overflow for anemones in my 75. I think it is because I give them strong light (400-450 par) and a specific food I feed them (proprietary and you will not find it in the reefing hobby lol). Happy reefing and happy new year.

Thanks for the info! I literally just moved my first bubble tip sea anemone to a live rock. When I released it, it was in a sandy area and it was inactive for hours. Hopefully it'll show some sign of life soon. I just started my very first saltwater tank recently and I'm documenting my journey on KZbin.

Good luck with your new acquisition. Your tank is very young, so you will have to stay on top of keeping water parameters perfect for that anemone, as well as the rest of the livestock. And make sure any powerheads you have in the tank have a foam/sponge cover to keep the anemone out of the propeller blades. Lots of people report deaths due to uncovered pump intakes.

In the small amount of time I've been enduring the hobby I've observed that high flow results in tentacles, low flow leads to bubbles. Just my own observation, nothing more.

You have to much direct flow, you only need a slight flow, with a slight flow they will stay in bubble form.

Great video. I really like it when you kick back and share your experience. Very enjoyable. I love BTA's and have a few types. I noticed that some bubble tips stay smaller splitting more often while others get larger and split less. It may be genetics in some cases.

Love the new tank. I have two 92 gallon corner tanks and my rbta's took over one of them. You can control them walking in a display but you do have to give them their own island with lots of space they don't seem to walk over sand and you can kinda control where they reach with flow. I started with one 6 years ago now have 8 mine tend to split when I changed bulbs each year.

Stressors seem to cause splitting, to be sure. I've seen anemones inflate and blow around like a beach ball. I love the island idea, if you have enough space to pull it off. I bet with 8 of them, that island is full now. :)

Yes, that is correct. They don't need to capture big meaty foods and can subsist of particulates in the water, or whatever the clownfish bring back to their 'home' - lighting also plays a role in their survival, providing a different type of nutrition.
