The sentiment "Throughout the game, you see everyone lose someone close to them, EXCEPT FUUKA" is often used to critique her arc and say that she doesn't mesh with the themes. People completely miss that her resolution moment with Natsuki is built on the fact that while the cast has all lost someone incredibly close to them, Fuuka still has her parents. It's a call to action. For Fuuka to reach out to the people she still has left and make the most of the time they still have. Her resolution is one of the most important ones in the game for exactly that reason.
@bluebay1031
@bluebay1031 Жыл бұрын
I’m not sure about that. Fuukas a great character and I do agree that her resolution is just as important as the other main cast social links, I just don’t think said resolution is “it’s your responsibility to build a bridge with the people who are actively causing you strife”

@@bluebay1031If you're talking about her relationship with Natsuki, then you're gonna be shocked to learn that people can change. Even those who used to cause you strife. It's what op said Also, Fuuka wasn't the one who reached out to mend things, or offer friendship irc

It doesn't have to be death, Persona 3 is really about life and the end, different forms of end that is seen throughout the social links too. Natsuki moved out of the town that made her realize that her time with Natsuki in school has ended, but it made her realize that no matter where they might be they are connected and also realized her persona is not the manifestation of her weakness but her desire to connect to people and see their hearts, thats why Juno's eyes finally opened

Persona 3 has the best themes and story! It's really hard to beat, and imo neither p4 or p5 came any close P3 made me care about the characters and actually made you feel as if the protagonist was its own individual, and you're going on a Journey with him. The ending only emphasizes that.

You mentioned the positives while overlooking the negatives P3/p3fes negatives: Bland level design Terrible s.links,lack of slinks for many of the SEES team. Cannot fully control party during combat Dumb ai Story falls flat just after midway point and only gets somewhat interesting towards the end Some of the music was not good at all. Yeah sometimes nostalgia blinds us and we only focus on the good points while ignoring some of its apparent and glaring negatives.

Yessss knock down is your friend. I love the reason FES has AI-control of party members. I always approached it from an "individual psychology" perspective, as in all the P3 members very much feel like separate individuals from the MC compared to the later Persona entries. Like the devs were going for based on the big P3 interview. I think it also means a lot that the male (and original) protag doesn't have SLs with the guys, and yet it doesn't mean "they're not friends." (There's actually a lot more I can say about this given the memento mori theme, the protag's starting demeanor, and the willing sacrifice at the end... and how the FemC route can offer a different perspective in large part *because* of how the male MC is portrayed, but I'm cutting all this short for brevity's sake lol). But yeah, it's a great point that it's not always easy to work together, even if you all have the same goal, and P3 incorporate that team dynamic feel very well. I know you bring up how P3 just feels very "real life"/organic, and this battle system is just another one of those reasons for me. Having played a lot of team sports and been in a lot of different music ensembles growing up, it just highlights that irl feel that you have to **communicate** with your teammates to get shit done. You all want to accomplish the same thing, but you all have different roles you need to fulfill to make it happen, and people can't read minds! Like speaking up when 3rd trombone part in jazz needs to play louder so the harmonies are brought out more. The player themself might not even realize that's what the ensemble needs rn. And dude yes, thanks for sharing more personal anecdotes with us like eating out in the Mitsuru section. I just want to say, it's cruel to shame people for things they don't know or have never experienced. 99% of people are doing their best with what they're given/based on their life experiences up to that point. It's already embarrassing finding out that something you didn't know is considered "common knowledge," so why be a shithead and make someone feel even dumber by making fun of them for it? "No wayyyyy you haven't done/don't know _______?!?" 🙃Not saying this happened to you in that particular instance, but this is just something I wanted to say lol. On that note, HOW DARE YOU SAY THAT ABOUT SHINJI AND THE FEMC TIMELINE SHIT. YOU'RE WRONG. 😂 (I agree, the chemistry is sweet, but I **am** one of those "I think it lessens the impact of memento mori and the Greek tragedy-inspiration of P3" folk lol. I think the same about the Chidori-Junpei thing in January ngl). Speaking of P3's Greek-tragedy inspiration, the social links very much echo that aesthetic really well, since one of the major aspects of that genre is the **tragic flaw.** Sure, all three Hashino Persona games have social links revolve around reverse-tarot archetype learning how to incorporate the upright traits, meaning all these characters have room to grow... but P3 above all three has pretty much every SL have a legit **flaw** at the start. Thank you for defending Mamoru btw. You just straight up Mamoru'd Mamoru and I can't thank you enough. Unconditional love is such an interesting concept. Like I agree, a relationship is a two-way street. Both parties will have a boundary, whether they think they have one or not. Ideally people will communicate and be clear about their boundaries **if** a time ever comes when one person keeps violating the other's, but even then things often don't work out unfortunately. With that said, the concept people call "unconditional love" realistically to me means something along the lines of: you can still wish that person gets the help they need/finds a way to change someday and live a fulfilling life, even if that means you won't be in it anymore. That's my take on it anyhow. I get we all think differently when it comes to the nature of human relationships. The month of December definitely plays into the Apathy syndrome aspect of this game. There are always gonna be times when life feels this way, and this works in a meta-sense where the player as well has to "slog through this month"/the difficult times and/or boring times (whichever way a person tends to view this month), to get to January and the apex of this fantastic game. and yesssss, JRPGs have **always** echoed anime tropes of the time. SAY IT LOUDER FOR THOSE IN THE BACK. It's like... Japanese archetypes will be reflected in ALL their different forms of media or something LOL. Persona 3 gang rise uppppppp. Incredible work. Thanks for doing this service for P3 and all us stans of it 🙏

Too bad that the AI part members don't make for a good system. Consistency is key, and they fail to do that. The fact they try to justify bad design by thematics is a joke, you can imagine their personalities and how they'd act as part of a team just by move sets and stats along with their battle dialogue, without having to see them do stupid choices that no player with a brain would make, even when you demonstrate to the AI what they need to do. You can say its realistic to how teammates would work in real life, but coughing, sneezing and forgetting what you were saying is also common in real life, and that's not usually a main part of a game, simply because its not good sign for an experience. The death scene was stupid anyways, not just because Junpei apparently died to a regular bullet rather than something truly threatening, but because he didn't even immediately die, not to mention how much time they gave Takaya to act. Like, if he didn't instantly die, then just use healing magic. You can use it in the overworked, and nothing in the game suggests you can't heal people with Personas otherwise so that's dumb, along with Shinji's death. The Greek tragedy aspect is such a snore, considering how many tragedies were just not truly addressed or caused because the party has no brain cells. Apathy Syndrome sucks compared to the Shadowmen in Persona 2, there's barely any reason to care about this, because no significant characters are affected by the condition, nor does the syndrome really worsen like it did with the Shadowmen condition did with Eikichi's friends. It's just a detached reason as to why you want to kill the shadows, rather than something that brings good depth, without showing worsening consequences outside of it spreading. Forcing the player into slogging through boring sections of a game in order to make meta feelings only works in a select few situations like the ladder scene in MG 3 or some of the gameplay of Spec Ops: The Line, which put them to set up some truly harrowing or climactic moments in the series. It doesn't work in an RPG like this, especially not when the majority of the game barely has any antagonistic pressure, stakes, or interesting story development. As for the tropes, if they did less intrusively, or done better character writing while using those tropes, then things would be different wouldn't they?

the segment on yukari is important, so many times i'll see people dismiss yukari as a stone cold bitch when she really only gets angry when it's warranted. the game literally goes out of its way to show that she is a sweet and caring person, so when people call her a bitch for simply standing up for herself after being sexually objectified and call junpei a bro after doing said objectifying, it begs the question as to what the real reason people hate her is.

6:44 is why this is my favorite social sim persona, everyone took situations in a more realistic manner. Akihiko, doesn't go hog wild. After seeing the main character awaken. He's most likely thinking, "who did we let into our dorm?" maybe even; "This sophomore might prove useful". I appreciate Persona 4 & 5 trying to be entertaining any way they can, but a scenario in those games would include someone screaming, "A PERSONA NO WAY, like DuDE he can do that?". Akihiko's face is so perfect. No words, it's a real mood-setter for his awakening. The whole game is littered with amazing mood-setters. As well as, the characters never disagree with each other in the other games, 4 have like one time that happens and 5 only have a feuding moment to make a Morgana arc. 3 really makes you feel like saving the world isn't your only issue.

55:15 - thank you for bringing that up!! One thing I love about Yukari is how impulsive she can be at times. She acts on emotion, and it often puts her at odds with people. Persona 3 means so much to me. I love the way it tells its story and handles its characters. I love how the game is structured and how it plays. And I love that it was unabashedly experimental. Persona 3 feels like a game that isn't afraid of being itself. It knows what it wants to be and does it with the utmost confidence. It has a very clear theme and message that may not be delivered super subtly, but is still done very powerfully. The gameplay is unique, from it's predecessors, to it's successors, and even it's contemporaries. The game overall gives you a one of a kind experience regardless of your background in media. I was 32 years old when i spent the night at a hotel for the very first time. I'd been to hostels and motels and (cheap) vacation homes before but NEVER an actual hotel. I was on a roadtrip with a friend and he got sick and he said oh lets just stay at this hotel for 1 night. He laughed for 5mins when i wanted to bring my sleeping bag and towels up to the room. I didn't KNOW hotels had towels and linens. My parents were very poor working class. And so we never went on any expensive vacations. I went on a plane ONCE when i was 16 and that was for a school trip we only managed to pay for with the help of my grandparents. The second time i was 22 years old and going to study abroad for 6 months. I just haven't done a lot of the stuff that people my age usually know how to do. Book flights, book hotels, know how to behave at a hotel breakfast buffet, know how to navigate an airport, buy anything that costs more than a couple of hundred bucks (i get such bad anxiety i start crying if i have to pay for a big ticket item). The important thing is that people are trying to learn knew things and that we're not letting our childhoods define us forever.

The only good thing about P5's AI: Morgana's actually prioritises healing Ann over anyone else. I normally don't find the Morgana simp jokes funny, but when they're written into the actual CODE? Amazing. Yukari gets a lot of demonization for the whole 'Fuuka was pressured to join' phase. I think a lot of people are just mentally conditioned to believe the JRPG party are "the good guys" and therefore she has no logical reason to be so against someone joining, but they can't see the characters' perspective: this is a shady group that's been keeping secrets and risks their lives on a weekly basis, and they're forcing another teenager in right after she got stuck in Tartarus for weeks unprepared. lol, you and I are on the same page about Mitsuru's social link feeling like a rom-com... BUT that turned me against it as I've seen a LOT of bad rom-coms in my day.
@egbertmilton4003
@egbertmilton4003 Жыл бұрын
I agree that Yukari gets demonised way too much. In fact, I believe she's more correct. She more righteous than Mitsuru. She's kind of right about her. Even if you can argue that Fuuka wasn't pressured, the fact that she allowed a 10 year old on the shadow death squad really throws Mitsuru's morals into question. Especially since she knows who Ken is to her and SEES' history. It's not like the Ikutsuki forced her, he doesn't have more power than her in SEES, especially as she's the actual leader of the combat part of SEES and the daughter of SEES actual leader. Unless, Mitsuru's dad was demonstrated to want this for whatever reason, it just make Mitsuru seem worse, without it ever being properly commented on. Yukari doesn't even properly question how fucked it is that they are get 10 year old child, an orphan no less, involved in life threatening business.

I have just finished FES and plan to play FeMC and RELOAD as well while it is still fresh. Having played it after P4G and P5R I have to admit I found it hard to like the game. The story showed promise but the low budget AMVs and bad dubbing often pulled me out of the immersion. I still stand by Yukari and she is honestly my favourite character aside from some standout social links but they don't compare to her since she has an arc amongst the main cast. Aigis came close but I think I was burnt out on FES before she really started to shine. My surprising conclusion to the top 3 is Junpei. I don't like him most of the time but his writing is so good I can't help but like him by the end. Overall I think it is the worst turn-based JRPG I have played but I have this weird attachment to the story that makes me want to play every version to find what truly resonates with me. Also I know I already said it but OMG having just finished the game and avoiding any critiques of the game to form my own opinions, it felt like whiplash hearing so many people call Yukari a B*tch and hating her and her arc. Especially when in many ways I do believe Junpei is worse when it comes to making people deeply uncomfortable and angry, without apologies either. so maybe it is my bias but the misogyny is really the only reason I can see for how much people hate this pretty incredible character.

P3's story and themes made it one of my favorites in the series. It made up for whatever gameplay qualms I may have. Personally, I have P3Fes and P5R at a tie for best Persona game.(I haven't played Femc route and looking forward to it!) Both games had really moving bits that made me cry too. Hard for me to pick one. I agree with P3 having the best cast too. I loved everyone! And you hit the nail - I don't think simply being like best friends is interesting enough to me or a great criteria to rank which cast is the best on. I much preferred P3's dynamic and I would actually like to see more complex relationships like that in P6. It's how they eventually got close only towards the latter part of the game that I liked. The development of their relationships. I love how you explained Yukari. She's my favorite girl from P3, 4 and 5. Thanks for this great in-depth video!

55:50 - Wow yah, so I'm someone that, having played each game, liked Chie to an extent, but when my friend pointed out to me that she's actually the worst, I was like "... Holy crap yah, she kind of is". But this opened me up to Yukari, she spends so long being seemingly a stuck up bitch that I actually never realized that she does apologize every single time, it also doesn't help that Q was the last real interactions I had with each cast, and because each character mostly only gets two of their main traits, Chie comes off a "Female Ahkihiko" in that she's all "Training and Protein", and Yukari sadly gets "Bitch and C***" as her two traits, since the game is so shallow with the main cast lol. As a result, I forgot that she was actually a good person going through a lot of shit..

Yukari isn't shallow at all. She's not a b*tch because she calls out Junpei for treating her poorly, which is the main reason people call her slurs. She is feisty about certain things, but so are male characters like Shinji. And yeah, once you get to know her you can better sympathize with her flaws.

Finally had time to sit down and enjoy this in all its glory. You absolutely cooked with this one. I especially appreciate the Yukari and Junpei sections since people are way too harsh on their dynamic; they clearly care about each other despite their bickering. The music section was also great since the soundtracks contribute so much to the tones of the male and female route. I like how the male soundtrack is more chill while the female is peppier since it makes the female route and protagonist feel even more unique. Awesome video.

the yukari segment was so refreshing, you expressed pretty much everything i've felt about yukari. i'm glad you pointed out that a lot of the hate is purely based in misogyny (waifu war obsessed gamer bros with bruised egos because she wouldn't give them their romance anime moment.) i think i might have a different perspective than most since i'm a staunch girly girl of a similar age to yukari and i tend to gravitate towards girly characters. i've never gotten the hate towards her (i've avoided the answer, but i don't think that's too relevant as people complain about her attitude throughout the game). it's clear she's an overall kind and caring person, but she has emotions and get things wrong sometimes. that's human, not to mention that she's a teenager. the hatred towards her feels so forced sometimes, but i hope your video might shift the perception of yukari a little.

"Shinjiro is the best romance in Persona" SO BASED!!!!! SO TRUE!!!!!! A lot of people dismissed his social link as just pandering for Shinjiro fangirls and I'm glad you're not one of them. Sure, as a certified Shinji enjoyer I might be biased but watching someone with suicidal tendencies (even already planned the day of his death) realize that there's something to look forward to in life even if it's small like cooking for your friends or hearing your friend's ghost stories is beautiful. It fits P3's theme so well. Dare I say that his romance route was integrated to the theme as well as Aigis. His friendship route works too, but let's face it, it's impossible to NOT romance him lol Also I really doubt the supposed P3 remake will add FEMC's route (it's probably just gonna be P3 FES with P5 graphics), but if they do, I really would love to see Shinji as the wild card in The Answer. People who want to keep Shinji longer in combat will be happy and I think it's interesting to explore his possible survivor guilt as FEMC dies instead of him (in the NG+ route it's even sadder since she dies in his arms, just shortly after he woke up from his coma). Also Aki and Shinji solo fight would be cool. It's still extremely unrealistic considering that Atlus would need more resources to write it (P-Studio is already very busy working on Persona 6 at the same time) and it's easier to just switch MC for FEMC in the existing The Answer but one can dream

I had a fairly similar intro to the series and Atlus as a whole. My roommate had a TV in our dorm and at night he'd play Persona 5. I remember watching him and asking him about it. Fast forward a few years later, and while I was looking for something new to play I picked up P5 and have been into the series since. Played 4 a few months later, and just this January I played P3. Another friend showed me how to emulate games, so it's onto 1 and 2. Before I knew it I played Nocturne and Catherine as well, and I'm halfway thru Soul Hackers 2.

One aspect of the tactics system of Persona 3 that people don't seem to realise, is that each character's AI actually acts based on their personality. If you set them up into Act Freely, and observe how they act, you'll realise: * Just how freaking reckless Junpei is 😂 * How caring Yukari is. * How tactical Mitsuru attempts to be. * And the absolute machine that Koromaru is when protecting you from danger. Each character has tendencies of their own that they lean into. And if you for whatever reason need them to act differently and override those tendencies (or lean harder into them), then you have Tactics.

Awesome video with a lot of good arguments. For me, though I think P3 has better story, characters, music and themes than P4, I just felt P4 Golden is just so “playable” it’s the better game overall (than either portable or FES). There’s just a lot of little things in 3 that don’t quite work for me. They could be nitpicks and what not but it’s the exact sort of stuff I feel was deliberately deviated from with 4, usually for the better imo. Then there’s 5 Royal, which for me is the best of the modern trilogy on all levels.

The reason i dislike yukari isn't that she's "Mean". It's precisely because she apologizes so much. She says sorry so many times, about the EXACT same thing. But never through the course of the game does she show any effort or results of actually trying to change her behavior pattern. When she gets mad it isn't mild annoyance, its usually straight rage, with the occasional nuclear meltdown. And every time she expects "Sorry, my bad" to fix the situation. After the 20th time of doing the same thing and saying sorry, I'll begin to wonder how sorry you really are. Because you obviously aren't putting in any effort to keep that same thing from happening again. Update: Watched the junpei section... yeah we're gonna disagree on alot. It's honestly kinda funny (and refreshing mind you) that Yukari gets an extra long segment due to her being misunderstood by the broader community. I was indifferent towards her, but your segment on her character really put into perspective the amount of care put into each and every member of SEES. Bravo. On that note, Aigis is my favourite P3 character, and you were spot on when talking about her. She doesn't really come into her own until the very end of the game, however it is my opinion that the moments where she does shine, she shines the brightest. It also sort of helps that the P3 movies zero-in on the relationship between Aigis and the MC more, but perhaps that was intrusive towards many people who aren't Aigis fanboys.

Kinda sad I never got to experience the reverse arcana the times I played since I chose to only go out with one girl (Aigis best girl) and since I'm used to walking on eggshells with people and knowing a bad option when I see one. Heck even if it's unhealthy the persona 3 characters hit closer to home in terms of friendships than 4 or 5 ever did so it was quite familiar territory for me and was easier to navigate the best options intuitively compared to the other two.

Persona 3 means a lot to me because it was my first PS2 game. I still prefer its story and its cast over P4 and P5 and will always vouch for its quality (I have a love/“you’re kind of annoying”relationship with P5, personally.) It’s nice to hear that there are others who find Aigis “good but not the best” character. I wish I liked her more because her importance is so obvious. The lead artist of P3 even said that her appearance is supposed to reflect the protagonist’s (her head accessories are the earphones.) But it felt like she didn’t contribute much to the cast until the end game. As you said she was just…Quirky robot girl. It just didn’t feel as organic. Personally, I liked Akihiko’s social link with the FeMC. It’s a biased opinion because Aki was my first real anime husband- but still. I liked it because it just showed how much of…Dense dork he is underneath that appearance of the “cool handsome senpai.” That side of his personality is shown in some parts of the story, but is really hammered in his SL. Doesn’t help that to romance him you have to really spell it out to him that you’re not a stand-in for his little sister. Because he’s REALLY oblivious to things that don’t further his goal to become stronger. I just like how romancing Aki gives him some kind of relief from the standards that he’s setting for himself. That he can be finally be a normal teenager in a healthy relationship. Sorry for the mini-essay. I can talk about P3 for hours, just like you did. Great video!

Admittedly I am one of those people who wonders what a persona game would be like if the persona users were mostly adult. You can roll your eyes until they pop out of your head but at the end of the day I still can't help but stand by it. A lot of people treat it as if adults don't have problems, or issues or development they need to go through, but if that were the case we wouldn't have more than half of the games we have nowadays in a general sense. I mean in terms of persona I do sometimes think the high school teen stuff does wear down on me after a while. This isn't to say that I don't like it. It's just that it also sometimes subjects them to tropes that are kinda overused at this point. At least that's my opinion. But so far for where I'm at in the video I agree with everything else. Especially about the realism of the battle mechanics. Exhaustion was pretty annoying but it was also realistic. Despite the other games not including it, in a real life setting noone would probably be able to do what these characters do all night

Great video, love P3 but mostly I just came to agree with your appreciation of Mitsuru, best girl for sure, I do love Aigis (and really, the whole cast in general) but Mitsuru is absolutely awesome... I may just have to go and replay the game now :X The only thing that is bad about her is the requirements neccessary and how late she unlocks as a social link, meaning if you dont go by a guide or dont know the game really well, you may even entirely miss out on her social link, or at least large parts of it, not to mention her christmas date. And while it makes sense, its still a bit off putting that you need to be so intelligent for her to even consider hanging out with you, even if she does mean it in a good way for your future. There are people who dislike Mass Destruction? Its so freaking lit. The music in this game is absolutely amazing, I replayed it several times but I cant help but cry at the credits song and the music in the city after you defeat Nyx is also incredible, they got the tone just right. I also dont get the hate for Yukari, but in my mind it always mostly stemmed from her actions in the Answer rather than her actions in the main game because she does always try to make up for her shortcomings, it also never really seemed like there is any real bad blood between her and Junpei so I just took it as bit of a friendly banter, I dont know, I like her, imo P3 cast is the strongest of the games. And yea, this is probably the only jrpg I can confidently say really did the power of friendship thing well, its almost in every jrpg but its usually so obvious and so overt that it kinda ruins any and all feelings of danger or stakes, here yea, power of friendship saves the day, but not only is it earned but it also still comes at a cost. Also... BURN MY BREAAAAAD!

I am gonna disagree with your take that Junpei didn't have a right to explode at Yukari in that scene, he is worrying about death and she teases him like the literal fate of the world isn't at stake and that they don't have a very good reason to be fearful. I think you are too easy on Yukari there, saying that Junpei was the one at fault and not her. Very unfair. The only part of his explosion that is really wrong is exploding at the protag as he didn't really know about the thing locked inside him. It would be more justified to explode at Aigis. But Yukari does apologize in that conversation.

42:01 i was sorta on the respectful disagreement side on direct commands about this until you said this portable is a fundamentally completely different experience to fes and telling someone to go to that for direct commands is even more extreme than saying they should mod fes oh and i'm ngl i played fes with that mod and didn't even know those bugs existed until i saw this video

Persona 3 was literally the greatest mistake of my life. I rented it on accident because someone swapped the cases in family video and decided that I was already home and it was in my Playstation so screw it and gave it a chance. Yeah they didn't get it back for like a month in a half or so lol

the gameplay for me fits well with the theme of the game. you must trust your companions throughout and having the fear to die every time. but in the end hardship was so satisfyingly finishing the game. it's like trusting your real life friends on their decision making in the Finals of a competition (theoretically). i finished the vanilla P3 and got bored in P3P maybe because it's not the same because of the theme of the game.

Yeah, a Persona game set in college is not a good idea for the reason you said in the video. A Persona game set in the transition to the adult life on the other hand... A guy in their first serious job, having to move to another town, living by himself for the first time. I think it could be really really cool.

Yes P3 had the jealousy mechanic, but ultimately there were no consequences to dating ALL of the girls at the same time (which is pretty weird, given the harshness of the rest of the system). Just reach the highest level with one girl (unbreakable bond) and then take the next girl over the "being intimate" level to max. Rinse and repeat. This results in the MC literally dating every girl at once and everyone is totally okay with that. I tried the same thing in Persona 4 when it came out, and the end result was me deleting my save and starting a new game, because the game called me out for dating multiple girls at once and made feel like a grade A douche. The reactions of the girls when they found out (at Christmas or Valentine's Day, don't remeber exactly when), just broke my heart.

I love P3 and the cast as well. I mostly agree with you about Shinji’s arc. It really makes him feel like a plot device for Aki and Ken especially in the male route. But I don’t understand how the the shindig romance ruin the timeline, when saving Shinjiro is COMEPLETLY optional. You have to go out of your way to find he watch AND give back to him. Let us have your tragic romance😢

i’m really enjoying this video so far, but goddamn man, you’re on deadly levels of copium when it comes to justifying p3p’s subpar switch to a visual novel style and vanilla/fes’s lack of direct party command. it really feels like you’re excusing these obvious flaws bc you don’t want to criticise the game. p3p’s little coloured shadow in dialogue options makes up for the lack of a 3d environment? this is just obviously a bizarre comparison to make, as if a tiny design choice can fill the hole left by the switch to a completely flat and bland style. the lack of direct command parallels real-life relationships? come ON. this is especially a stretch bc, if this was an intentional part of atlus’s artistic vision, why did they remove it from p3p and all subsequent persona games? i don’t wanna sound too critical bc like i said, love this video so far but it’s okay to just admit that this game and its various versions fall short in certain aspects, that doesn’t make it any less of a beautiful and brilliant experience.

why is it so hard to believe something you don’t like doesn’t bother me? lol. i literally say i know why people don’t like those things. the portable team was not the same team as the original, so of course they wouldn’t fully capture the original artistic vision. fes’s team was largely the same. that’s why they *didn’t* direct commands in fes. you also act like i didn’t criticize anything about this game when i stated the quirks of the AI and said aigis, one of the most popular persona characters, could’ve been a lot better.

@@bubbletea_ or, they didn't because they made a stupid decision that can't be reasoned with. This is not kingdom hearts, ai companions in a turn based rpg make it literally a singular turn you have control over. I'll also use the opportunity to "attack" your Yukari opinion which is some life is strange tier bs. Just because a character had bad things happen to them doesn't justify them being awful to everybody. Like Chloe she's just insufferable and hypocritical. Yukari is a bitch to junpei and the rest of the party frequently, detaches herself from them, her inability to understand her mom trying to cope by finding a new man when this didn't just happen, he died WHEN SHE WAS LITTLE, she had time to understand her, she slaps mitsuru when she's mourning her dad when she took decades and a blue haired emo twink to get better about it, AND THEN FALLS BACK INTO IT ONCE HE DIES, she mocks junpei for crying about his dead girlfriend, then does it again when EVERYBODY IS SCARED ABOUT DEATH,"heh feeling scared junpei?" NO SHIT, DEATH IS COMING! Everyone except fuuka and aigis had lost a loved one, akihiho his sister and shinji, mitsuru shinji, her and her dad, junpei chidori, ken his parents, shinji had his guilt of killing somebody, yet they don't insult each other and actually try to downplay and ignore others pain like Yukari ends up doing, on top of the answer where the others also miss makoto , and (due to the stupid cheating mechanic) all the girls love him as much as she does, yet she's the only one that's bad enough to undo her previous development and SACRIFICE THE WORLD FOR MERE ISTANTS OF HIM! She's just a bad character because she never learns, if she only had her answer moment or only her journey moment it would've been ok, but she repeatedly fails to understand other's pain and act like she's the only one that's gotten a shit life and everyone else can't understand her and they suck. Her good moments are overshadowed by her awful moments, especially with junpei. It's so funny that you call Yukari haters mysoginistic in a series that has the common awful anime trope of girls hitting guys without consequences for random shit, can't wait for you to defend that ryuji scene in p5!

@@thatitalianlameguy2235Ken tries to kill another party member, so you can't really say he handled his grief better than Yukari. Shinji didn't either as he resorted to pills that were killing. Junpei literally snaps at the protag for something that wasn't his fault just because Junpei is feeling anxious. All the characters have flawed ways of handling themselves, it makes them interesting and they eventually apologize or correct their flaws.

Not sure I'd go so far as to call it misogyny with Yukari but there is a thing in in story telling where I've noticed with characters that have truama can either go one way or another. I can maybe see people being annoyed at her complaining a tad too much. But I've had friends like her who were also just total sweethearts and were generally some of the best people I've met so I'm inclined to look past her faults and acknowledge that she's on a path of growth. Lest we forget, she, and everyone are, teens. And as you pointed out she does correct issues or apologize and seeks to grow. But a lot of people maybe just haven't grown up themselves. But then also it's not like we'll always like everyone we meet. My personality is kind of universal. I can go anywhere and make friends. So I'm maybe a bit too biased myself when it comes to my take on her. But, personally, I think she's a wonderful character like the rest of team members are.

Yeah, idk if I support calling things misogynistic when it comes to views on characters. It doesn't lead to anything good. People the insult target will just get defensive and people who support calling other people that will just look down on other people. It will shut down debate and will get people to stay in a circle that supports their view without judgement.

@bubbletea_

it's the decision making aspect that i enjoy. like i said in the video, choices aren't made on a whim. they require foresight and taking advantage of the other tools you're given like checking the turn order and analyzing the enemies to keep your party in the loop. the ends are the same, but the mindset/approach are different. not vibing with it is one thing. saying it can't work or shouldn't exist is because the more common method exists is just absurd. additionally, in most rpgs and even mainline smt, party members are on a mostly even playing field so direct control still feels fulfilling in those cases. in persona, the protagonist greatly overshadows everyone else. more versatile and flexible than even most smt protags who can only have so many skills equipped at a time and are limited to one stat build. this system makes it feel more like you're working *around* your characters' strengths rather than them just being an extra arm for the behemoth that is your protagonist.
