Bubu's escape from an hawk

A few weeks ago I had a bad experience with Bubu and Fuco as they got chased by a bird of prey probably an hawk.
Bubu managed to escape but was lost for a few days and I had to find him by actively searching everywhere.
If a cockatiel is escaped it can be very hard to locate it, it helps a lot if the bird is trained though.
My trained cockatiels free fly every day it's possible, they are hand reared and trained since very young chicks.
Cockatiel training is vital as well as gaining your cockatiel trust.
Never try to cockatiel free flight or any other parrot without prior intensive training, not just recall indoor.

What an ordeal! I'm sure your birds were happy to be reunited with you. Free flight is risky but your excellent training helped guide Bubu back home.

Cockatiels are afraid of everything yes. Mine sometimes get scared of nothing at all and fly around the flat for no reason, a few times the male makes this high pitched scream and they all fly away without really knowing why, I assume he might see a pidgeon fly by though the window and that might be enough to warn the others. Anyway, I'm glad to see you found Bubu safe and sound.

Cockatiels are extremely good and agile flyers , they're the smaller version of falcons, so it's not easy to catch them

So glad Bubu was found :D I think it is amazing that they can free fly eventhough there are risks. I don't know how they could learn more about the larger geography of your region so that they could find their way back from a town further away.

I’m so glad Bubu and Fuco are safe!! So scary how Bubu was gone for that long 😮 , I can only imagine how terrifying that was, I’m so happy he’s back 🥳🥰🥳. It was crazy when you said bubu has years of experience, because Ive been subbed for awhile now and I remember when Bubu was born, I didn’t realize it was that long ago! Seems like yesterday. Bubu has had many babies of his own now 😄🥰

so glad you got bubu back. I lost Sunshine my cockatiel for one night and I was very sad, but the next day I trapzed over the field and called out and she replied and came to me. you were smart training with a whistle. I say 'hello' many times and she responds, but i'm sure I look mad walking around saying 'hello, hello, hello' many times to find her :) 😂

Hello there. I had silently wondered how your birds were never attacked by any birds of prey. You are much more optimistic than I am. I think I would have stopped the free flying after the 2nd time. But I understand that you don't want to take that away from them. I feel guilty about keeping them inside of my studio even though I keep the cage open and they fly around when they want. I'm so sorry you had to go through that and very happy BuBu and friends are safe. At least you can look back and remember the hunt for BuBu and laugh about the reaction from all the people who saw the crazy unicycle whistler. 😂 Take care 💛🐦🐦

I'm glad you let your birds free fly outside, but there are safer ways to do that. You can set up a batting net in your yard or put up a net over a part of your yard. I'm glad you got your bird back! I wasn't so lucky with Jewel, my cockatiel. I wish I had been more careful. You could also use a gps. Birdtricks channel shows how to freefly birds safely, they're very good. By the by, you are the second person I have seen use a uni scooter.

My cockatiel was also pounced on by an eagle and its wings were injured, but it survived and did not escape

Hahaha they thought you are Ace Ventura 😁. So happy Bubu was found! I am thinking (also for our birds) to use some aviary netting, like the one they use at the zoo, to cover the area above the garden, to protect them.

It will come back and eventually it will catch a cockatiel ...it will happen ...please keep them from free flight for a while ...one will get caught ...ask me how i know..
