It goes further than that! Blue Bell, Yeti, Big Red, Lone Stare Beer, Shiner Beer, Dr. Pepper, Siete Family Foods, Waterloo and those are the product/store that I can think of right off the top of my head! Most people don't realize that Yeti (yes, that Yeti...the beverage container manufacture) had stores.

So many women are so afraid of "unsafe" restrooms but how common is it for a woman to be sexually assaulted in a restroom? If you really do feel unsafe carry pepper spray, know self-defense, and carry a taser. Women are evolutionarily hard-wired to be hyper-cautious to prwvent behind sexually assaulted or killed. But in today's America the vast majority of sexual assaults happen between people who know each other or live near each other. There just aren't many people going out of their way to rape women.

My mom worked the counter of a mechanic shop. The owner made sure the bathroom was cleaned twice daily, and well decorated, even fresh flowers. Everyone commented about it and they had a lot of female customers... #1 reason... If they take this good care of the bathrooms, they must do a great job on your car.
@nahor88

@@DogSpeak Honestly, it should be a business standard to have a bathroom as comfortable as the standard middle-class American household. Ethnic restaurants in particular can be really bad. I think one way Buc-ee’s could stay competitive nationwide would be to regionalize different location. For example, in Wisconsin they could rollout new products like their own version cheese curds only sold at Wisconsin locations. It’d keep the local population interested and even make it a travel destination for some people
@cats400

They kind of do that. The core products are the same, but there are some regional variants between each location

I've been to 4 Buccees. They are sort of regionalized. In Florida they are geared towards beaches, promoting boogie boards, swimsuits, umbrellas, and beach towels. In Alabama, they promote river touring with kayaks, and hiking gear. In Georgia they promote camping, and fishing. In Texas, they have a massive cowboy hat section. It's all minor differences, but effective.

Several big things about Buc-ee's you didn't hit on. 1.) They make and bag their own ice on-site and is why they can sell 20lb bags for $0.99. 2.) They hold a patent for their soda fountain system and chill the incoming water very cold to reduce the amount of ice melt in the beverages. 3.) They are VERY strict on employees, and do not have places for them to sit in the back for break. You stand and eat your lunch, for example. They expect a LOT for what they pay, which is well above any other store. 4.) When they contacted ICEE to put machines in their store, ICEE was not convinced they needed more than once machine. Nobody ever needs more than one. They had to invite their ICEE representative to a store to show them the size and scale of the store to convince them. (This was told to me by a senior-level employee during a behind-the-scenes tour I was on, as I worked for vendor they used). They do have a cult following, but it was earned. The jerky wall isn't just "a lot of beef jerky", it is dozens of flavors of very high-quality beef jerky. The sheer amount of food they make on-site is staggering - fudge, nuts, cookies, BBQ, kolaches, and so much more. And all of it exceeds any sort of "gas station quality" preconception you might have. It only works because the two guys own it and refuse to lower the quality or cut costs on the good and services they provide. If they had shareholders to answer to, they would eventually cut costs and become another store with sub-par, "gas-station-quality" goods and services.

As a Floridian, I stop at the Buc-ees along I-95 every time I go up to Georgia to visit family. It's always packed and it's not hard to see why. It has a kitchen and bakery you can see into to know what you're getting. They also have a gift shop, a mini-mart, and a massive selection of sodas, and a large cup's price is in the same ballpark as Circle K. Plus, being able to cater to big trucks, normal vehicles, and electric cars helps them out too. Overall, they have it all and is 100% worth the stop.

Its funny, my dad heard about Buc ees a year ago right before we went on vacation to Georgia. We stopped by there and tried it. When we came back home we stopped again. And the next year we went to Georgia we stopped again. The bathrooms are the best and while the female side has a line like any bathroom, it always moves so fast. And the huge soda selection is amazing. It just gives anyone who has something for everyone. and it encourages just grabbing something to see if you like it. Been to many gas stations but they are the best.

I know this little tid bit because I come from small town Texas, I was just one of the lucky ones who got away, but most of the folks I grew up with are still working in that town, married, have kids and just work whatever job they can, and that's where Buc-ee's get's people, it likely also helps with turnover.

My wife is from Austin, so we used to go to the Bastrop location a lot. I think they are being very smart about what locations they are choosing in new states and how spaced out they are from each other, so they're doing the closest thing they can to mimic their Texas strategy as possible. They have such a unique concept, as long as they don't canibalize themselves by building too closely to each other, they will be a smashing success.

The new Athens store in AL follows the same formula as the Buc-ee's expansions in TX with positioning between major cities: it's right off of I-65, around halfway between Birmingham and Nashville (~2hrs from both), and near the I-565 junction to Huntsville (almost right at a half hour to the Saturn V). Also, this is the kind of area that still gets really freaking excited for new chains. Over the past decade, there was a similar level of hype around Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. Heck, when I was in high school in the mid 00s, my school's marching band played the opening of the Walmart Supercenter. This is absolutely a place where Buc-ee's can thrive. One caveat, Buc-ee's here in AL still feels very TX in a strange way. Like, there are some small Bama touches to the homegoods sections, like AL-shaped signs and kitchenware and a fishing section, but there was mostly a strange amount of southwest-specific items that were fun to look at but not anything I could see myself or most people from this area buying.

I work at Buc-ee’s, and I can promise it’s probably the safest place you can go to on the road in Texas. Everything about Buc-ee’s is structured in a way to ensure every customer and employee’s safety, and I’m not exaggerating. For instance, another reason an employee is always in the bathrooms is not only to ensure cleanliness, but to also ensure that there are no issues where someone is in there when they’re not supposed to be. Also, notice how the walls in the stalls are closed off and the doors are lower-set compared to other convenience store bathrooms? Same reason.

One other thing about their billboards. They have a lot of them, a whole lot of them, as you approach a location along the highway. However, I have noticed that they really ramp up in number when you are approaching a competitor gas station/travel center. As a Texan, one of the important aspects of Buc-ees is that you know where their stores are. You watched them pop up and got excited to hear when they were expanding on a route you often travelled. This is when they became big...New Braunfels, then Madisonville, then Temple, then Fort Worth, then Terrell... You would then plan any highway trip with a Buc-ee's stop in mind. If you are on an interstate, the billboards only remind you of something you are keenly aware of. You are there for the experience and ironically the experience doesn't get old. Buc-ees is not cheap either. Their items, especially snack and food products, are marked quite high, but it doesn't matter because you will pay it. This is because you will stop for gas and the bathrooms...and the next thing you know you've bought $50 worth of snacks and $100 worth of souvenirs and other junk that you could have bought at Hobby Lobby instead. You will do this because you will visit grandma twice a year in San Antonio fully intending to hit Buc-ees in either Temple or New Braunfels at least once during the trip. You'll even do this AFTER spending $40 on kolaches at the Czech Stop in West.

Love Buc-ee's so much. I live in Fort Worth and used to date a woman who lived in Denton. For those not in the DFW area, that's about 50 miles apart. We used to do date nights once on the weekend and another evening during the week. I was so happy when the put in the Buc-ee's near the Motor Speedway. It was perfectly halfway between my home and hers. I stopped there every week just to fuel up the car and me on the way home after our Sunday night date nights. Buc-ee's is the best!!

It's a great place and I thought that your description was quite accurate. What will make or break the brand is depending on can they keep the demographics and traffic utilization similar outside of Texas? The only one that I have personally visited has been in Kentucky was early afternoon non holiday weekday and it is as a absolute mad house. Something to consider is they are building locations along major arteries that have similar traffic statistics that a small town may have total. Yet we don't see Walmart refusing to build in towns with *only* 20,000 people in them. That's the population base Buc-ee's is pulling from

I think what Buc-ees has proven is they can make it outside TX. It's not black magic. They pay their staff well and demand high standards from their staff. They are a privately held company, so they don't care about investors and what comes with that. What to travelers want? -Gas, and not to wait for it. -Clean bathrooms -Food and drink -Maybe trinkets Buc-ees is there for ya. Chicks dig kitch. They got kitch. Dudes dig outdoor gear. They got outdoor gear. The location in Wharton ha some amazing high end smokers and grills that are just...dude magnets. They know what they are doing. All they have to do is get management in place that enforces standards. They will have to do it ruthlessly. You pay top dollar for the job and you can do that. They will do fine.

I live in Wisconsin and went down to Florida for the first time this March, and in turn went to my first Buc-ees. Literally while I was on that trip, they posted the article about possibly putting one in Wisconsin. And now on the interstate near Madison, they put a Buc-ees billboard saying that the closest one is 600 miles away. Hoping that’s advertising around their future Wisconsin location. Never heard of Buc-ee's until having stopped at the one in Gulf Shores on my way to Mobile airport in March. WOW! is all I can say. I was blown away by the entire operation. Uber friendly employees, awesomely clean and pleasant bathrooms and the food is no joke. I had the brisket sandwich and homemade chips for lunch and they did not disappoint. Their jerky is off the charts and blows away Jack Links for a fraction of the price. They have an incredible gift department and more fun knick knack items than you can shake a stick at. The owners have got the formula down and there's no reason they couldn't replicate their forma successfully is any state, same as Cracker Barrel has proven.

I live just a few miles from a Buc-cees here in Texas, and I can say much of this was pretty spot-on. Here's a few other things that I think are worth mentioning: -The immense and eclectic selection of souvenirs and merchandise goes way beyond just branded stuff. They also carry a lot of beautiful and high-quality stuff produced by a variety of companies, including small businesses, local companies, and artisans here in the state. My wife and I have, by total accident, run into each other in our Bucc-ees while Christmas shopping for each other. A lot of their selection makes phenomenal gifts. -The place knows how to handle a crowd. Even in the middle of the afternoon on a holiday weekend, when the roads are packed with travelers, it's possible to get in, get what you want, get checked out, and get out without getting completely overwhelmed by the sheer number of people. -The food is far, far better than what you'd think of as "gas station" quality. The barbecue is genuinely better than some dedicated BBQ restaurants I've tried around here. It's definitely a better, fresher meal than probably 95% of available fast food from other restaurants and gas stations. (Also, those in-house potato chips are killer.) -They have their gimmicks, but the brand has built itself to be uniquely and unmistakably Texan to the point where it's now a cultural icon here. I joke with my friends from out of state that if you ever want to find the Texans wherever you go, just wear a Buc-cee's shirt. The Texans won't be able to keep themselves from gleefully pointing it out and stopping you to say hello.

I recently stopped at the Adairsville location on my way back from Chattanooga, TN to Atlanta, GA and this video basically summed up why I thought this place was absolutely amazing. Even when slammed (an employee said they see more customers a day than the local Walmart) because of a softball game (BOTH teams in addition to the coaches and parents, etc were present on top of the normal patrons) the wait was less than that of a typical convenience store, there were clothes for sale, knickknacks, toys, etc and amazing food and beverage options. The entire place was bustling but exceptionally clean, and all the food I purchased (a brisket sandwich, two burritos and various flavors of Jerky) were top notch and high quality. I see no future where this brand doesn’t absolutely dominate the market, as there is simply no competition because of the sheer variety of services this company offers at its locations.
