Vagabond Chronicles

Күн бұрын

come with me as we explore over 50kms throughout bucharest. from getting kicked out of a building i accidentally wasn't supposed to be in (whoops), to learning more about the architecture of the late 1900's, to seeing some of the more ornate structures i've seen to date (both from the early 1st century AND from the 20th century).
note: i'm just a novice architecture nerd, so some of the stuff may be a bit off, but i'm learning as we explore throughout this super cool town!

most of the buildings that you call brutalist style are actually art-deco buildings built in the interwar period.

You don't understand anything about the buildings and architecture from Bucharest. Building from min. 9.30 is former royal palce, hosting National Art Museum today. Romania or its territory never been under greek occupation. Also the land of Romania was never part of Otoman Empire or part of Greek state. Min. 37.40 there is no transylanian architecture in Bucharest. That is neo-romanian architecture.

That's a replica of Trajan's Column, the original is in Rome and it tells the story of Roman Dacia, the conquest, and the building up of the province, one of the most important monuments attesting to Romanians origin story

Considering that most of the Thracians/Dacians civilization evidences strangely "disappeared" this is only prove of the Dacians continuity. In my childhood time in many country side areas of Romania people still used to wear same clothes as the Trajan Column Dacians.

@@vagabond_chronicles Yeah it is. Anyway, at 2:24 that "brutalist" one might be interwar modernism so well before brutalist times. That statue at 11:30 is Michael the Brave. The church at 12:35 is the Russian Church and it looks Russian. Romanain churches don't look like that, you can search for the 20+ that are UNESCO World Heritage sites plus Trei Ierahi, Putna, Black Church in Brasov, Curtea de Arges Monastery, Cozia Monastery, Neamt Monastery and so on. You can also search for the Mosques in Conatanta and the one in Mangalai - few mosques in Romania so they stand out. At 20:30 that's Trajan's column - the Dacians used to live in the area and in year 105-106 the Roman Empire managed to conquer it after building a 1km long stone bridge across the Danube (the head of that bridge still stands) so the column depicts the story of the victory. And that's Romania, Dacians+Romans. And yes Romania has lots of Dacian and Roman ruins, plus some more but foreign tourists tend to fully ignore that. And if you want to go back even further in time, search for Cucuteni culture, Tartaria tablets and more. Or Pestera cu Oase, oldest remains discovered so far, some 40k years old. Oh and urbanization in Romania is relatively low at just 56% so rural life is a huge chunk of the country. There is huge village museum in Sibiu plus some smaller ones elsewhere. And USSR was trying to expand their influence and gave a handbook? The West sold out at the end of WW2 and gave half of Europe and half of Asia to Russia and Russia imposed those communist regimes by military force. They had troops in Romania until the mid 50s. What's going on now in UKR for example, is a direct consequence of what the West did almost 80 years ago, the long tail of WW2. And the cold war was also a direct consequence of that mistake. Russia got the most out of WW2, by far but the West doesn't like to point that out as it makes the West look bad lol. Anyway, before WW2, Romania was one of the most developed and prosperous nations in Europe. Also, France had a huge influence as many Romanian intellectuals in the 18 hundreds studied in France. So that's why a lot of French architecture but not only as Romania had money to hire high profile architects. And Bucharest has lots of parks, not sure where you got the info that it does not. Other cities, Brasov, Oradea, Iasi, a couple of smaller ones, Sighisoara, Alba Iulia and now back to larger ones, Timisoara, Sibiu, Cluj, Constanta (lots of ruins in the country), Craiova. But Romania is also a lot about nature, lots of mountains, the Danube Delta plus some seaside. Maybe also search for Sarmizegetusa Regia, just cos it's interesting. Anyway, just a few things, there is a lot more.

- Over 90% of Romanians believe in God, around 23% attend weekly. - The Church is the second most trusted Romanian institution (after the Army). - There's a good number of churches in Bucharest, actually, and more are being built. For instance, in the small area of Old Town, there are at least 3. - Eastern Orthodox churches (Greek, Romanian, Bulgarian etc) are the same spiritually - we maintain communion, meaning no Church can take liberties with spiritual matters (interpretation of the Bible etc), without all other countries also agreeing. Meaning we rarely change at all :D It's just that we are locally administered by equal Patriarchs (Patriarch of Romania = Patriarch of Bulgaria etc), so there are different flavors, so to say :)

You got your facts very wrong. A lot of people are going to church, and that's because we Romanians are very, very religious. So the facts are like, this: Romania is a very religious country, with Christianity being the largest faith. In the 2021 National Census, 85.3% of the population identified as Romanian Orthodox Christians, 4.5% identified as Roman Catholics, 3% identified as Reformed Christians, and 2.5% as Pentecostal Christians.
@vagabond_chronicles

exactly!! i found it fascinating that Romanians are very religious, but with fewer churches than i could find in Prague. whereas Prague has a LOT of churches - with not a very religious population. thanks for sharing your country with me! i loved my time there :)

@@vagabond_chronicles best time to visit is autumn. Transilvania, northern Moldova, Maramures region, Bucovina monasteries, seaside....Rent a car if you can. Visit Brasov, Iasi, Cluj Napoca,Sibiu Deva, oradea, timisoara, Turda (salt mine)...but all these are main tourist attractions. If you rent a car you can stop wherever and make you own plan and make your own personal discoveries. Romania is safe but use your common sense when driving and everything will be ok. Drive during the day and respect the speed limits. Also...nature is amazing in Romania ...we have Carphatian Alps with caves, hiking trails...a bunch of stuff....so you need to read more and make a plan...you'll not going to be disappointed 😉 ......maybe you will need a couple of months....ha ha....Thank you for your thoughts about our capital city....Romanians do not like it very much ..this city suffered many bad things in the past but if you have a curiosity like yours .....you'll find it's charm. Take care

What you are brutally calling a " Brutalist style architecture " is actually Art-deco , it doesn't matter what political regime it was created to. Regarding the beautiful building 's mozaic, you personally recognized that it requires a high skilled person to do it, so, the people in the communist regime were very skilled at what they were doing, no matter the regime itself. In fact, in the communist regim it was required to be good of what ever you were doing, otherwise,... it didn't work out for yourself.😊
