Hunting public land can be and usually is a challenge. Especially during rifle season it’s generally a nightmare. I used to hunt the Canadian river north of Amarillo ( one of very few river places the state hasn’t allowed the ranchers to block off). During archery season it was pretty much very quiet to hunters. I ground hunted mostly in the salt cedars along the channel. It was a maze of small openings and trails with lots of like 30 yard openings. Took quite a few deer. Mostly whitetail and few mule deer coming to drink. I’m talking 25 years ago with long bows and early PSE compounds. The long bows shot nearly as fast as the compound back then,lol.

I’d suggest that while you talk, don’t flail your hands and point and wave and jester.

It could be that the buck was closer to you and you might have got a shot at it except you were talking in the stand. I believe that there are more deer around you that you don't see because you are talking. If you want, do some voice over when you do your editing, but rule #1 in the deer stand is no talking. Noise control is extremely important.
