A big but lightweight survival knife! The Hood designed blade performs outstandingly in TNP testing. Made of 5150 tempered spring steel it is tough. Good spear blade too. Highly recommended.

Hey Nutn... while it surely is a beautiful blade you're unfortunately mistaken about the marrow notch not weakening the blade... sad to say that I've had TWO of them break clean through right where the notch is... and both times i was batoning, and not even through a knot

My good friend Neal just bought me this knife, in part because of this review. Thanks Nutn for your honest yet honoring review. I pray my hands use this tool in a worthy manner that builds Hood's Legacy and that my son and daughters will one day cherish this steel the same way I do. Second kind of cool? No Doubt!! Thanks Neal! Thanks Nutn! Thanks Ron Hood!! RIP Brother!

I love this knife however it would be nice if they removed the notch for carrying pots on the camp fire cause that is the one and only weakness of this knife.

What a great way to remember's a man's legacy. I really like the effect in the beginning with the picture of the log in the background, and then the knife thrown into the log and small videos around. Thank you for sharing and best wishes for the family and friends of Ron.

The notch keeps me away, they should do a version without it, I saw a video "buck hoodlum fail" the guy barely had it out the box before it snapped right where the notch is.

I wanted perhaps a little more than a knife review here...something to remember Ron by, something for his family, and paying respect to a lost friend. I appreciate the show invite and I will stay in touch, thanks man.

@nutnfancy - You and I have never met but I still want to personally thank you for the kindness you show to Ron's memory here. Ron was a long lost brother it took me 37 years of my life to find, we shared more than a few drinks, lots of tall tales from our military lives and were business partners. He was one of my few truly close friends and I will miss him. Thank you for your kind words here. If you ever want to be on TSP as a guest just let me know.

I’ve been apart of TNP for about the past 2 \ 3 years, & I’ve learned a great deal from you, but not just about guns, gear & knives, more so about character & integrity. Watching your latest review on the Buck Hoodlum, by Ron Hood I truly am humbled by the respect, honor & truth display in your reviews. This one of many reasons why we are taken by the class you exhibit, very cool indeed. May Ron's family find a sense of peace, not in his passing but in his living life, God Bless.

Some friends of mine knew Ron very well. They say he was a total class act. It's weird: I was watching nutn's 2011 SHOT show interview with Ron right about when he died. I watched that and thought, "What a great guy. I'd love to meet him some day." Thanks for your tribute to Ron, nutn. You're a class act too.

Nutnfancy, I have waited 4 months for this review and I was NOT disappointed. Nice memorial to Ron,and an HONEST review of the blade, noting its chopping limitations due to the light weight. With that said, it looks as though you and Cr0cket could have built a log cabin with this beast. Splitting lodge poles,WHAT? That was awesome! Thank you for being so considerate and for the no B.S review. This is one of your best vids yet, along with the Sheepdog Concept. You should be very proud of this.

I'm a fairly young knife designer, and I have to say that Ron Hood was one of my favorite and most respected knife designers. I grew up with his knives in Boy Scouts, and I still used them as a camp counselor after I got my Eagle. With his passing, as well as Bob Loveless last September, I can feel my idols slowly dwindling down. That being said, I am now inspired to create more designs that will one day be produced by a major corporation. Who knows, maybe Nutn will review one someday!

Awesome review nutn, I'm sure Ron would be very proud of this review of his knife. All the things we normally say. He had a good life. He loved life. He was a great man. I did not know much at all about the man. In fact, the video from Shot was all I ever saw. I remember it well though. He was a real character. He was enthusiastic in a genuine way. Funny as all get out. These are the signs of a man who had that life. It is more than to just say it. Very tasteful. I'm always impressed how you can delegate criticism constructively and with respect to the product and their designers. Up in Canada we don't have the pricing competition you enjoy in the States, and I've always been an mid size axe packer. but this is definately a knife I'll be looking for in the under $150 range for my first and only survival blade. And thats saying somthing, because when I buy a knife, I commit to it for life or until its worn out.

The Hoodlum paired with a Cold Steel Gurka Kukri is a great large blade system. The Hoodlum is an excellent batoning blade and the Kukri is a great chopping blade. If one fails, the other CAN do the work, but I prefer them in those roles. The Hoodlum is an excellent blade! Great for fire building.
