Whitetail deer communicate through the scent they leave behind, and bucks do the most scent marking during the rut, or from around October-December.
Bucks will rub their forehead, preorbital, and nasal glands on a tree or overhanging branch (and in some cases will actually lick and chew on the branch) to release their scent. Once done, most bucks will paw the ground under the branch and urinate in the spot as another scent-marking tool.
