The year was 1994. Green Day released Dookie. Weezer had 0 fans besides their moms when they released their self titled album. People thought Illmatic by Nas was pretty cool. Outkast had been together for two long years and decided to release Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik. And Meshuggah decided hell was too quiet.

Pretty unsettling effects on those vocals. Makes me think of some kinda Lovecraftian, interdimensional being trying to communicate with us.

Djent is describing a specific guitar tone. An 8-string isn't necessary. I mean, Periphery are djent and they don't use 8-strings. The "djent" term was coined by Periphery talking about the guitar sounding exactly like it does in this track! There's a reason Meshuggah are considered to have invented djent, but htey did it a lot earlier than people think it seems :)

This is the sonic equivalent of descending into hell. Chaotic noises to resemble existence in this world and then, suddenly, one leaves Earth and falls into an seemingly endless, zero-gravity, pitch black void where all that is left is the screams of the past agonies followed by absolute silence. The sudden noise at the very end of the original version is when the descent is complete.

Listen to a few dubstep songs and imagine them being played on a low tuned guitar. Most of the time it works pretty well. I'm personally not much of a fan of Dubstep, but that's my observation. Many other musicians (including Misha Mansoor and Mark Okubo) have said the same.
