That was pretty awesome yet tame. On a big tide, there will be whirlpools 6 to 10 feet deep you have to manuever around. I've seen more than a few large fishing boats keeling over and almost capsizing, unable to fight the current and get caught broadside. The Narrows can get completely nuts.

The peek was 10.5 knot ebb. It looks like the current at this time is running at about 8-9 knots.. boat speed through the water at the light is 10.2 knots.

Best is Nakwakto Rapids. Diving Tremble Island during slack and feeling the tide start to come on is something else. There is a little channel just to the side of the main channel our dive boat capital referred to as the toilet bowl. Going through there during the running tide in drysuit and snorkeling gear was one of the craziest dives I ever did ,,, dive down 5 or 10' and having the world coming at you at 10+ knots was one hell of a ride.

Why buck it? Why not have the tide work for you?

If I thought it was unsafe to go through at that stage of the tide I would have anchored in deep water bay and waited 5 hours until it slackened as I have done in the past. The Ocean Destiny was one of the most stable fishing boats I ever operated. Perhaps we were going to Vancouver to unload on that day... don’t remember what was going on.

@@Sisiutlforyou Fair enough. A working boat is not going to wait 5 hours if it can punch ahead.
