Dramatic raw footage of NOAA researchers tagging orcas with cross bows (killer whales) in Antarctica

I took these incredible shots while accompanying whale researchers who are doing excellent work in helping whales by tagging, cataloging, and studying the killer whales in Antarctica. (Viewing in HD recommended) Arrows are used to attach GPS based location tags to the dorsal fins and as you can see the whales do not react to it. I imagine it's similar to a human getting their ears pieced. Tags stay in place for about a month before falling off and help track the whales migration patterns. Biopsy arrows on the other hand collect a tiny sample of blubber on the hollow tip of the arrow to help scientists determine their nutrition, health and diet. Every arrow used is accounted for under strict permits and regulations.
This research has shown the population of the Ross Sea whales are declining. They normally feed off the Antarctic Toothfish which is a large fish which has been over-harvested by commercial fishing. However, during this filming, these whales were seen feeding off a very small fish, the bourke fish as the toothfish were no longer present. For the whales to be expending all the energy just to hunt for bourke fish is like us hunting for a single grain of rice. Lastly, it seems a lot of KZbin whale experts think the whales are stuck in the ice. They are not. They are in one of many holes in the lead and we are very close to the open sea.

This is hands down some of the best Orca footage I have ever seen. They were so expressive with their body language. At first, I worried they felt a bit stressed from the darts, the swimming got more aggressive. But once that job was done with, they seemed to genuinely want to interact with you all. Comparing whales in the wild with those in captivity (aquarium) proves to all deniers that whales are better off in the wild than in the orca circus. Eat less fish and don't visit zoos or one day there won't be any great whale videos like this because the orcas won't exist anymore

Most marine mammals are curious. Fish, too. White sharks are also curious and like killer whales will spyhop to get a better view of objects of interest. In fact, curiosity is not really that rare. Whales are intelligent, but not _exceptionally_ intelligent. The domestic chicken is at least as intelligent and social as any cetacean and probably have a cognitive edge on many species of whales. We went from killing whales for fuel, industry, etc, to almost worshipping them as demigods, kindred spirits with deep wisdom and knowledge. Neither treatment is ideal. This belief in their exceptional intelligence is more religion than science.

I love seeing this family group. A couple of the males have really tall dorsal fins. There was a baby with the group too as it was spy hopping. This is the BEST way to see Orcas in their own environment not stuffed in a fish bowl for being a money maker for entertainment at SeaWorld!!

Seaworld claims that It is "common" for orca to have their dorsal fin collapse, but I have yet to see a single piece of footage of a wild orca with this "common" feature.

SeaWorlds male orcas fins collapse because they spend so much time at the surface. A fin that big with no bone or water support is obviously gonna flop. If you havent seen any flopped in a video you havent been looking. For example several orcas in South America have partially or fully collapsed fins as they beach themselves to catch seals. The reason it is thought to be sickness that flops the fins is because most of the time in the wild orcas who have that condition were injured or sick at one point so thats why they stayed on the surface

This is probably the only danger those animals have to worry about. Narvals often face the same problem.

There are only a handful of killer whales kept in captivity across the world, and the ones at SeaWorld parks are doing fine. Pretty much everything you have been told about killer whale captivity is a lie. You are swimming in ignorance.

Meanwhile, in captivity the no of orca related fatalities is unbelievable high and you want to keep them at “Sea World”. To all yoo people that say we should not tag and research these orcas because they will be fine on their own, the research produced from this is that the orcas are not okay. The population in the Ross Sea has been declining. Why? Because of overfishing by humans of their prey, the toothfish. We would not know this if not for the research you see in this video. There is a movement to stop himan harvesting of the toothfish. Go to lastocean.org and help save these whales.

+sicbul Fear? You can't hurt orcas with that, it's like throwing paper balls to a person. You clearly have never seen orcas battling sharks (including great whites)... they can lose pieces of flesh without even noticing it. Their skin regenerates very fast, much faster than ours, and it's thick like you wouldn't believe. Would you be afraid of a chihuahua or a rat? That's what humans are to orcas. Those orcas were clearly having a good time, greeting humans, showing off, playing, etc. Anything that helps us understand how they live, the problems they face, etc. it's actually helping them too.

This is what orcas are intended to do be free and do whatever the hell they want. Not be a play toy for humans. When you see an orca with a fin that is erect that means they're content you look at all the ones over the years at SeaWorld and their fins droop over that means they're depressed because they're in such a shity environment. Thanks for nothing SeaWorld.

We have had Orcas recently and we tried to rescue a baby Orca named Toa...there was a massive effort to find his pod with unsuccessful results.. sadly he passed away and someone is going to write a children's book about him.. such beautiful creatures.. we ❤️ Orcas ... Thanks from NZ 👍🇳🇿
