So what do they do when the lip is damaged? TIG weld new material and machine it down?
@nickolastiguan6 жыл бұрын
yeah, I wish they would explain more/tell us
@volundrfrey8966 жыл бұрын
I doubt the heat cycles are good for the wheel. But it would be interesting to see that since curb damage often is on the lip. If you plan to paint them you can use metal bondo.
@billybobjoe1986 жыл бұрын
@@volundrfrey896 I don't see a reason why the heat would be a problem, the wheels are formed under immense heat. I imagine you would just need to temper it afterwards and have a nice evenly stressed structure again. The powdercoat oven being 400 degrees probably does that anyway.
@volundrfrey8966 жыл бұрын
@@billybobjoe198 It can create stress, a welding arc is a lot hotter than that oven. But it might be fine, I'm not an expert on subject, however I would think twice before welding.
@cliveramsbotty60776 жыл бұрын
@@billybobjoe198 TIG welding is hot. Hot enough in fact to break down the oxide layer and the base metal. So you create a heat affected zone around the weld which can change the structure of the alloy local to the weld repair. You would also need to know what alloy was used when the rim was cast in order to select the most appropriate filler rod. 'A nice evenly stressed structure again' would be extremely difficult to achieve. Weld repairs to alloy rims does work in some cases but there are limitations of course.

Ammo, I have a weird problem with my paint on my car. There is a cross shaped crack in the paint that measures about 2cm x 1cm. 1 of the 4 ‘flaps’ has come off from washing the car a few months back. My idea is to brake off the other ‘flaps’ leaving a bare area 2x1cm then use touch up paint following the video you did on DRIVE CLEAN. Is this a good idea or is the area too large for touch up? What would you recommend?

But they are never as shiny as I hope, I really feel there's a deeper shine in there. There are almost no useful raw aluminum videos on YT, I have searched for years.
