@Buckminsterupholstery3 жыл бұрын
Naugahyde is made in the USA. They have a number of vinyls that work well. Burkshire (sp?) is a good choice. The pattern number starts with BRK- _ I don't recall what I used in the video but it wasn't what I typically use.

Nicely done. What size stitches did you use for the seam and the top stitch?
@Buckminsterupholstery4 жыл бұрын
Off hand I can't say how many per inch. My stitch size reads 1-5. ... 3 1/2 seam and 5 top.

Do you give an allowance for the stretch of the vinyl. In other words do you make the top piece slightly small since the vinyl stretches when you staple it. Thank you.

What model duo staple gun is that? Thanks in advance
@Buckminsterupholstery Жыл бұрын
I don't know the model number, now obsolete for parts. It uses the 3300 series staples, now somewhat hard to come by. I purchased the gun in the late 70's, around 45 years ago. Obviously has been a very good gun.

What size staples do you commonly use for this? Great video and explanation! Thanks!
@Buckminsterupholstery4 жыл бұрын
Because there will be staples along the way that need to be removed in adjusting the cover I use 1/4" as they are easy to pull. When I run into thicker folded layers I step up to at least 3/8", or maybe 1/2". Thanks in return.

What is the purpose of the plastic that you stapled over the back of the bench? What kind of plastic is it?
@Buckminsterupholstery3 жыл бұрын
The plastic, or any cover on the bottom side is for sanitary reasons. The plastic leaves edges smoother with a more cleanable surface than plywood. Less hiding spaces for spiders and other insects. What kind of plastic? It was on the seat so I reused it.

Dear Buckminster Upholstery, Could you please tell me what that black plastic/PVC(?) backing sheet material is called? I'd to buy some to hide the staples and plywood on one of my benches, but I don't even know what to call it! Thank you!
@Buckminsterupholstery3 жыл бұрын
I don't know what the plastic sheet is called. Some years back a fellow upholsterer said it's used in custom car interiors and can be heated and bent. I'm not personally familiar with this. You can cover the bottom of your bench with black vinyl. Thanks for tuning in.

Im planning on creating a home made gym bench and want to use some left over vinyl kitchen flooring. That seems thicker than this. Will it easily staple down with a heavy duty staple gun? If all else fails I will use an old air mattress. The side that's vinyly.
@Buckminsterupholstery3 жыл бұрын
Why not look for an area upholstery shop and buy suitable vinyl? Hobby Lobby may have some. Walmart? I can't answer to your staple gun as it depends on the length of staple and the type of wood you're stapling into. 1/4" is plenty long, except maybe for the folded corners.

My distributor only sells to people in the trade with tax-exempt status. Check with an area upholstery shop. I use HR-70 in these applications. Re-bond foam is more firm but tends to have a rough surface.

@Buckminsterupholstery3 жыл бұрын
My distributors sell only to people in the trade. Look online, or for an area upholstery shop and they should be able to provide you with materials. Staplers can be a problem for the DIY person as electric and manual staplers don't usually have enough drive power.

Got vinyl and 1/2” foam at a fabric store. A friend has a great stapler, tools and woodworking experience. Took us several hours, but it’s not bad for our first attempt. Lesson: take before pictures to make sure you can put it back together as before. We took measurements, but a picture is invaluable. Thx!

I'm unable to tell you what is a reasonable rate of charge. You have to decide that based on your location and personal status. What you saw in this video reflects approximately two hours labor plus the price for 3/4 yard of vinyl. No foam replacement involved.
