I have a vintage stool that has some very interesting guts to it. There was a layer of horse hair which I have saved, and the webbing is quite beautiful I am hesitant to just discard it. I’m perplexed how to clean it though. I’m not sure of the age of the stool but it has the same nails that This stool your demonstrating had.

You can get by without using slip-eze. It just makes the fabric pull down better without shifting the cotton out of place.

Thanks... I found an interfacing product from dressmaking that looked similar. I've just finished using it.. deffinatly better than cotton. Very happy with result. It was wonderful to rewatch you to get it just right.

I have a vintage stool and wanted to reupholster it myself. I removed the fabric and found horse hair underneath some burlap. Then there is some hand done webbing. I feel I want to maintain the webbing and clean it somehow. I looked up how to clean horse hair. I’m going to put some cotton batting on top, then muslin. I see that you removed all the old guts of the stool though. Am I foolish thinking I can keep the webbing and horse hair?

Pitch the webbing but save the hair.

I’ve told myself that if I ever learned a trade, it would be upholstery. It must be wonderful to step back and appreciate a finished project, let alone hear the “oohs” and “ahs” of your happy customers! I work behind a desk and that has its own hazards. I’ve been wondering how your hands and wrists feel after 40 years of doing this work. How do you care for them? Do you have help now and then or do you always work alone?

Around 25 years ago I had some serious issues with tendonitis in my left wrist as my left hand does the gripping and pulling. I figured surgery would be in the making but it eventually took care of itself. Two years ago at this time I was recovering from a shattered radius where it meets the wrist. My right hand was pretty much paralyzed for a couple months. Weeks of painful therapy. Off work for around four months but I worked hard at getting strength back in doing pushups and chin-ups. In looking at the final X-ray, my surgeon said it healed perfectly. No loss of motion but I do have some permanent but minor nerve damage in my thumb and index finger. Now the issue is my finger joints and arthritis. A few weeks ago I stripped some '72 Chevy bucket seats and flared up my fingers. Still swollen and sore. No more wearing of my wedding band. Lucky to get it off... I can see problems developing. I'll soon be entering my 47th year in the trade. I work alone.

I'm late to the game in watching this wonderful resource. I have a question about the product you refer to as "Slip Eze". May I ask if this product differs from the product used to ease foam into a prepared case? The "Slip Eze" mentioned in this video looks rather like interfacing. Most references to Slip Eze I've been able to find look like 'plastic'. And the 'stuffing' used (on the lower base) is it upholstery batting (wadding) - cotton? Thanks for your help. Appreciate the video.

Product names tend to vary. Seen here is non-woven fiber which my distributor calls "cushion-eze". The plastic version is "silk film" or "slip-eze". Yes, cotton batting.

I have a question Kim, I've been saving up to purchase a BeA staple gun but I'm not sure which one is the one I need to go with. Is it the 22g 3/8" crown or 20g 1/2" crown? In the video it appears as if the BeA gun uses a larger staple for the webbing and the other gun seems to be using a smaller size for the rest of the work. I will be working with leather and vinyl for the most part.

My BeA gun uses the 80 series staples. I've seen there is a 70 series gun which I assume is the smaller staple you describe. For the most part (aside from heavy duty applications) I prefer my 1977 Duo-Fast gun (3300 series staples) but it's pretty much obsolete with sources for staples difficult to find so I use it less often. Go with the smaller crown. Good luck. "Buck"
