This video details the upholstery of a Mission Style oak rocker from start to finish. Learn how to tie down springs, use wood wool for stuffing, and covering the seat with vinyl. Along the way, I show tips and techniques that I hope you can benefit from in your journey as an upholsterer.

I love watching you work. After 4+ decades in the Navy and federal wildlife law enforcement, I have developed an interest in old hand tools, carving, backpacking, fly fishing, AND furniture restoration. Your videos are almost “zen like”.....in that they relax not only me.....but surprisingly, my Australian Shepherd as well!!! Plus.....I’m learning something! I’m just getting into the restoration of a Stratford Chair Company mission-style chair....and discovered your “channel”! You remind me of a younger Sam Elliott....you even have same midwestern speech pattern! Bravo-Zulu, job well done....on a well-produced AND instructive AND relaxing KZbin video!

So far these first two videos on the rocking chair have been more informative than any I have seen. I have a very old rocker in desperate need of being completely redone (chair seat and stripped and stained. I knew it would be quite a undertaking to do it properly and you have definitely shown me I was right about it being a big job but your instruction of the proper way of doing it is wonderfully informative and easy to follow. Thank you so much for all the time you put into sharing this with everyone. Look forward to the other videos in this series.

Extremely helpful video and the only one I've found that explains and demonstrates everything in a clear fashion for someone like me who knows nothing of the subject. Also confirms my belief I'd better leave my job to the professionals because it's a true craft!!

I buy wood wool from Van Dyke's Restorers, Woonsocket, SD. Considering the cost of shipping it's best to buy a large quantity since the wool itself is inexpensive. Off hand I can't tell you how much it takes for a seat this size but 10 pounds goes a long ways. I buy 25 lbs but use it often.

You give a lot of helpful information and I enjoy watching your videos. I have an old fainting couch which folds out into a bed and trying to get some help and information on it. Have you ever repaired or redone one? If so I would to get help with springs in mine.

These are known as "bed lounges". Yes, I've worked on a few. Some had a wire mesh similar to "chicken wire" for support of the mattress. Contact me via my website for more information.

My thanks back to you. Your crochet hook suggestion is interestingly good. The regulator I use is also an inexpensive tool which is a multi-purpose standard in the upholstery trade.

Kim-It looked like the wood wool was on top of all the bridle stitching. I missed exactly how you pulled that twine to tighten around the stuffing sections. I thought it was tight pulled tight from left to right. (Is that clear or confusing?)

you don't tie the spring tops into position, I went back to the beginning, to be sure, and to see if you had top lashed the springs, but you had the canvas over the spring s before I could see. Do you prefer the wood wool, to coco fiber,or horse hair.
@Buckminsterupholstery
@Buckminsterupholstery 9 жыл бұрын
Michael Leo Paglia Watch part one. Springing is fully demonstrated. Cocoa fiber is tougher than wood wool but more difficult to work with and has a scritchy noise in use. Horse hair is best.

Do you have any suggestions as a substitute for the wood wool? I have a Smith Day & Co Early 1900's rocking chair I'm restoring. It had flat grass layer, horse hair, and cotton felt batting. I like to do this without the wood wool and hair. Thank You, your work is amazing!
@Buckminsterupholstery
@Buckminsterupholstery 8 жыл бұрын
Foam and dacron would be the only substitute I know of. You can probably replicate the look but not the feel. With rebuilt springs and foundation cloth you might be able to re-use the original padding. Clean it up with a fresh layer of cotton on top.
