I'll never understand why he didn't try to have a solo career. His voice is so good, he was the voice of Bucks Fizz. The mess they've all made of the fight over the name sounds like a lot to do with his controlling wife :-/

Loved the song and have the single, also watched most of the series although frowned upon by my father as he saw the other side of the story which a teen wouldn't ; i.e. compulsive gambling. I often wondered whether like the film "Eudcating Rita", which also has an undertone to it. The film depicts a college lecturor ( Michael Caine) teaching a group of students of which Rita is one but on a part time basis as she is working but wants a Degree through the Open Unversity. So she has to attend a number of lectures for the purpose of the course. Again, like "No Big Deal" written on a humerous note, it shows a man who is clearly an alcoholic being pulled out of a corner by a person who he doesn't suspect can cure his alcoholism. The same applies to No Big Deal, where it is clear that this is to do with compulsive gambling and as the opening and closing titles indicate the futility of compulsive gambling with over-laid images of paper money followed by paper money running down a gutter and in to a road drain. Indicating that one follows the other you throw your cards in, they go in to the "waste pile" (gutter); but with it so does the money that you gamble but never win back, although you allude yourself that you are always on top. In real life I have come across a compuisive gambler, who I met in a public house and what started up as a casual conversation, I noticed always led to the gambling/fruit machine. He would literally feed this machine and although getting payouts which he always counted as gains, could not grasp that in the long term he was putting more in to the machine than it was giving back; but he could not, or preferred not to acknowledge that. To me that rang bells with the "No Big Deal" theme and what I watched when I was younger. Also noting though this casual meeting and (short lived) friendship with this compulsive fruit-macine player that he too was part of a "Card School" with a group who played draw-poker. Again like the Robbie Box never admitting that he made a loss; but when short of money asking people to lend him that would be winning bet, or next coin in the fruit machine would win him the next jackpot. Again when pleading for the money claiming that he would "pay you back as he had loads of money at home, but just hadn't brought enough". Hovwever it was clear in a very short space of time that this would be pot of gold at bome did not exist; only in his mind. Indeed he referred to himself as a "professional poker player"; although I doubt that would stand up on a CV -:). Rather like the Bobby Box would claim to be a professional card player and winning lots of money (but not disclosing he lost a lot too) and that was his living. Actually not the case, the reality being on balance it was always a net loss. So again it always raised the question that this was a subtle way of the Government vai the BBC (the latter has always been the voice of the Government to the "Proles" [ack Orwell: 1984] and indirectly telling people what they shod "know". Actually both "no Big Deal" and similar serials relating to compulsion such as alcooholism - a good example being East Enders where the Bar Lady reconginses that one of the regulars is in fact becomming an alcoholc. In both cases of No Big Deal and East Enders, there were a couple of after credits annoucnement, although not too obvious, that if you were a relation or a friend showing thes tendendcies to get them to speak to Alcoholics Anonymous (sister charity Al. Anon for those needing support from relaintionships with alcoholic problems) Gamblers Anomymous together with its sister operation Gamble Aware to get gamblers admit they had a problem. In both scenarios it is the need to get the compulsive gambler/driner to admit that they do have a problem and where to get help to at least reduce the problem . In reality it is rare that a serious alcoholic or gambler will ever stop the additionc, but at least it can be kept relatively controlled. Given that both programmes were staged on BBC TV (again the mouth piece of ruling political party) in order to make people aware of the signs that these no longer social matters but more singiifant and where to get help.

Deserved a place in the top 40 on both of its releases yet it didn't happen. A bit odd as I seem to recall hearing it quite a few times in '86. Maybe in trailers.

It still sold a fair few copies though, hanging around outside the top 40 for several weeks

Gone are your dreams You had them so very long Now you're having a run But don't you know when you're done You still carry on It's no big deal To take a chance against the odds Do what you feel Round up your stake And go for the lot But luck runs out And you could lose All you got And yet you still take the risk 'Cause you just can't stop You're just one big deal You vow to get out But you know you're stuck in the game And though you're losing the pace Each night you're playing your ace You gotta carry on Well It's no big deal To take a chance against the odds Do what you feel Round up your stake And go for the lot But luck runs out And you could lose All you got And yet you still take the risk 'Cause you just can't stop You're just one big deal Well It's no big deal To take a chance against the odds Do what you feel Round up your stake And go for the lot But one more time You find yourself all alone And when the game's cleaned you out And you're walking home Well It's no big deal To take a chance against the odds Do what you feel Round up your stake And go for the lot But luck runs out And you could lose All you got And yet you still take the risk 'Cause you just can't stop You're just one big deal

God wasnt he? Cant believe he was in that, shows the mark of an excellent actor to pretend to be in love with Paulien Fowler. Ray Brooks has been my hero since 1996 when UK Gold repeated Big Deal, before that he was my Dad's hero in the 80s, when I was told to sit still and behave whilst he watched it :]
