The Ultimate No Till Food Plot is an incredible way to plant food plots for any food plotter. Since the early 2000s I have enjoyed originating, practicing and forever trying to perfect the process of using buckwheat as the base in my Ultimate No Till Food Plot plantings. You can see how easily the process is and how fast you can efficiently and effectively plant your food plot, while using this decades proven technique. This is one of my most recent no till buckwheat smashdowns for one of this year's most important food plots...
*Make sure to check out how you can incorporate this food plot method onto your overall habitat and hunting design, by visiting my web class at www.whitetailh...
*To make sure that your Ultimate No Till food plots grow even better, contact Jeremey Flinn from DeerGro at (502) 758-5111.

I just got my buckwheat planted yesterday ahead of a great rain last night. It looks like tomorrow and monday nights will be very cold, but from then on, cold is behind us in the South. I know buckwheat is not cold tolerant. My question is will these next two cold, cold nights impact germination, or is buckwheat sensitive to cold only after germination???

You can not. Also, it's very easy to smash down...tired on your truck, lawn mower, atv etc. And you don't have to use glyphosate unless you want to control weeds, sid in germination, keep the buckwheat from shading out young growth....or, use a more powerful herbicide and wait to plant because of the residual (as gky is the least powerful herbicide and does not have any residual)

Thanks Jeff. My first year attempting this method. Brassicas coming in strong, WHS blend a little thin. It has been very dry in Verona county. One variation, I attach my spray boom low and in front of cultipacker. I spray and roll at same time getting good contact with spray, less over spray and takes care of two tasks at once.

Hi Jeff... another interesting and informative video.. thanks!!! I have about 2 1/2 acres of small bow hunting size plots on my 40 acres... they are from 10-30 years old and the soil compaction is severe... have fertile but heavy clay soil so everything pops out of the ground quickly but stalls out when it hits hard pan.. am committed to your no till method going forward but need to deal with the soil also.. will the cover crop / no till method help over time or should I wait a year and try to use a sub soiler and bust things up first??

Hi Dan I would definitely hit the plots with tillage radish in the fall/buckwheat in the summer. In the brassica portions I often cut the brassica rate in 1/2 overall, and then add back 7-8#s tillage radish. That seems to be a great combo and it improves soil quality in many ways. Another option is to add sun hemp with the buckwheat during the Summer. The only problem is that deer crave sun hemp in most areas so that really depends on overall deer density. But sun hemp is a great soil builder! Very good mix with BW and SH.

Maybe I'm showing my ignorance here but curious if seeds you spread before crushing are just naturally resistant to the spray you put down after crushing or if the buckwheat is thick enough to protect the seeds from chemical contact? Thanks!

We practi e smart, balanced food plot methods that don't rely on heavy discing and tilling methods that dry up the soil, destroy topsoil and create erosion concerns. Don't swallow the Kool aide that chemicals are bad...in fact without them, you can't have smart, quality food plots. The key is balance. Weed control is critical to having quality, worthwhile food plots.

Thank you, Jeff! I just seeded, crushed and sprayed my first no-till plot using your method. Sprayed with 2 qts per acre of glyphosate. Put brassicas on one half of the plot, and peas (100lbs per acre) and beans (50 lbs per acre) on the other half. Looking forward to seeing it grow! Plan to put down rye just after Labor Day on the peas/beans side. By the way, you’re 1000% right on not seeding buckwheat so early that it gets 3-4+ feet tall by the time you need to seed over it. I jumped too early and planted around June 1 (MN). It’s tough to seed over 3-4+ foot buckwheat unless you’re 6’7” or taller!

Just curious, why do you have to wait a few weeks after spraying the 2-4-D as opposed to the glyphosphate, are they not both post emergents?
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 4 жыл бұрын
They are both post emergent, but the 2-4D has a residual of close to 20 days. Crazy there is so much unwarranted negative press about Glyphosate...but it is the least potent of Simazine, 2-4D and most any other typically used ag chemical. In particular for its ability to stay in the soil. Soil actually nuetrailizes it

I had tried growing buckwheat this year with little luck. I think it was in part to poor soil (5.5 pH) and maybe to my seeding rate being too light. I did get germination but the plants never fully matured. The deer are now cleaning what did grow up as of recently. I was wondering in all your years if you have ever tried a mustard green cover crop? It seems to have a similar structure to buckwheat and some beneficial soil building qualities.

Jeff, I have land that we are slowly working on improving but don't have food plots setup yet. The areas that I would like to add plots to next year have overgrown tall weeds. Should I try to kill of the weeds this year (central Minnesota) so that we can plant buckwheat in the spring or wait for next spring to start the weed control?

Hey Jeff! Quick question. I planted my sweet feast brassica blend on friday (yesterday) at like 8pm. I couldn't spray the weeds then due to rain coming. Could I spray the weeds in the plot on Sunday (so 2 days later) without the risk of it killing them? Or will the seeds have "popped" where the glyphosate would do damage?

So I noticed alot of your videos are based on dealing with Northern weather. I hunt in texas which is a bait state. But we have a small 50 acre area that we are planning to build up and we have quite a few deer roaming around. We are planning to do some planting on about 2 acres that we just disced and its still reaching 100 degrees here so I was curious when you would start planting

Jeff, thanks for everything yall do! Just to clarify, your seeding, crushing, and then spraying chemicals to kill the buckwheat on top of the seed? Any particular spray? Seems like the chemical would kill the seed prior to germination.

I put my seed down on Monday and first flash flood in 6 years hit Tuesday. My plot was under 3ft of water. Unbelievably about 60% of my brassica made it. Spread some more today and going to follow up with winter rye on any bare spots.

im sure you have already done it but i have a clover plot that i mow late spring and around aug. 1st. When I mow August 1st I also spread my Brassica blend. I have also had decent luck with a slight overseeding of beans, peas, or corn. Nothing but mowing and spreading seed. I'm sure that it's more of an exception rather than a rule having that work out for me.

I always carry a handful of different pins and different sizes in my truck all the time. I'm always losing them when I'm brush hogging. You'd be surprised how often they disappear lol.

Hey Jeff I am going to do your no till method this year, and had a question about the cultipacker. Does it have to be a cultipacker or will my large yard roller work? Thanks

Hi Jeff, you always talk about giong from buckwheat to beans rye and peas etc. But what/how do you go from the beans/rye/peas etc to the next year and what is the crop?

Can you elaborate on late planted beans? I'm in southern Indiana and I'm being told it's too late to throw beans... I have my buckwheat planted getting ready to spread seed in a crush was hoping I could do beans yet

As always, thanks for all the great information that you put out there. Question on your seed blends ... if/when you have left over seed, do you save it for the following year, or do you find that the germination rate falls off significantly? Had to purchase my buckwheat in 50# bags and ended up with more than I could use.

I Think your making more work for yourself by planting so late in the summer dealing with hardly any moisture and having to pack old growth on your seedbed

Looks great Jeff. I had to call an audible on my plots. Doe mowed through my buckwheat like a weed eater and left only stocks. Guess I’ll be filling a few doe tags this year.

Jeff, am already working on doing this on a few of my leases this year in central MS! I’ve been taking pics as I’ve been going along! Everyone else says this spraying and no til seeding is never going to work, so I’m looking forward to having the picture evidence as all the pieces come together! With that said, I just wanted to say thanks for the info and I definitely look forward to watching your years of hard work pay off for me and my family this year on our places!

Jeff, first time trying your no till method and the buckwheat came up great! We seeded/cutipacked in unexpected rain today, and my question is would it be ok to spray that in a day or so because we didn't think spraying would be effective today?

Fantastic videos Jeff you have taught me a great deal. I have a question. I noticed 5 days after a rain my seeds germinated but I noticed it seemed more seeds germinated where there was bare ground more so than under the crushed stalks. Does the thatched area sometimes take longer to get seed growth. Thanks again for the great info.
