Canada rye and Virginia rye are on the mean seed list and has injured my English Cocker with seed penetration to its leg needing surgery. Thank you for informing me of an alternative.

Kallstrom Dairy Farm / Kallstrom Sweet Corn , has been using Triticale for over 40 years . We no longer have a dairy , but when we did we would double crop corn silage and Triticale . Our farm income now is from fresh market sweet corn . We plant and harvest the sweet corn , then , aprox. 3 weeks latter plant Triticale , a livestock man then stars grazing [ this year on October 30 , 2024 ] . If all works out as planned and if not grazed off to much and no heavy rans and ground not compacted to much , the triticale will grow back in spring and will be swathed and high moisture round bailed and wrapped . This way we can get three crops a year off , 1] round bails in spring 2] sweet corn 3] grazing in the late fall . Now if using the same field year after year you have to reverse which side of the field you plant first , you cannot wait to plant sweet corn after round bailing . This has been a great income generating program , [ if all works out ] Ha Ha

For wildlife habitat/food plot needs, either one will work well, but my observations suggest that deer *with a choice* will eat awnless seed heads before they'll eat seed heads with an awn. I'm not saying they won't eat winter rye seed heads, because they will if they're hungry enough, but I'm confident in saying they'll eat awnless wheat and triticale heads with regularity.

It takes a known variety, not a VNS, and you can plant in to it and go back about 2 weeks later and roller crimp it if your row cropping. You can also put some tillage radish in with it that will winter kill if it gets cold enough there. Also, get a couple of legumes and brassicas that will winter kill, then maybe frost plant a pea in to the triticale when the ground is frozen at night, but thaws during the day. I keep my old worn disc openers just for that… It’s not “prescriptive” farming doing our thing. It’s chaos, and if one is not wild eyed obsessed with it, yet knows how to collect and interpret it, they will fail.

So we also use Triticale, Rye, Austrian winter peas, white and brown mustard, crimson clover which creates an amazing habitat for beneficial insects not to mention that each plant unlocks and injects nitrogen, prostatism, sulfur, everything a healthy soils needs. We need more farms using cover crop mixes to quickly restore bio mass which balances soils for maximum production and sustainable profits.

Does the wheat growing earlier in early spring translate to the triticale being its a hybrid? In other words can a herd move from hay to triticale sooner than on rye?

Are you able to harvest your own triticale and grow it the second year? Or is it a first year cross of rye+wheat where next year you need to buy triticale seed? I like that I can get heirloom Rye and grow it year after year.
@davidkottman34406 ай бұрын
Triticale is a closed cross that does not naturally hybridize in the field with rye or wheat, nor will it segregate back out into anything else in future generations. Replanting the seed will grow the same type again.

Like ALL too many discussions regarding crops ZERO about nutrition for Humans but a lot of discussion about planting, harvesting, mechanical handling, yield, yield, yield... etc. While I'm a strong advocate for all things regenerative agriculture, eventually we need to eat this stuff and if zero attention is paid to nutrition then what good is it?

I wonder if it makes tasty bread for a person if you let it run to seed, combine it, or scythe and thresh, then check the falling number, mill the grain, mix with water, salt and sourdough, let stand for 24 hours, then bake. For Latin etymological reasons, I rhyme "triticale" with the Spanish word "tamale" instead of the English personal name "Kayleigh", but then I guess I'm not really a farm lassie. Are you gonna grumble at your certified wheat seller? That sounds really bad. I wonder what the craziest weed you've found is. Not necessarily the most severe (i.e. quackgrass - not particularly crazy, but is particularly severe), but the craziest. Like "how did _that_ get _there_?"
@jvin2486 ай бұрын
Rye (and probably triticale) will drown out Quack Grass and several other problematic weeds. I use Rye as my herbicide and Buckwheat as my insecticide because it encourages beneficial insects (thumb sized wolf spiders, bigger garden spiders, and pocket knife sized praying mantis).
