I was raised to be obedient, to work in the garden, to pick blackberries in the summer, to keep a clean house, to do it all RIGHT, then I went to grandma's house and cleaned her floors. This was all before the age of 12! If I misbehaved, I got my butt swatted. I raised my son the same way. He had chores to do, and if he was misbehaving, he got his butt fanned! He, in turn had raised his two girls the same way. People who let their kids run wild and misbehave have always told him and his wife that they had such good kids. That is because they trained up their children in the way they should go. They are good girls, they do their chores, they help with the work around the house and in the yard, etc. the older one is 17 now, and she works at a grocery store, goes to school, and still helps around the house. I am very proud of my family. We were all raised right, and got disciplined when necessary, and in my son, daughter in law, and grandkids, it really shows.

So happy you doing this, he was talking about my childhood here. But i helped my grandparents work in the garden. Helped snapped beans. That was in summer. Then in fall, me and my brother helped with carrying wood into house for the woodstove. And i wouldnt trade a second of my childhood.

I first saw Bucky on American idol. He didn't win but, that only made him try harder to chase his dream. I'm glad he found his success.. Bucky has a twin brother (identical) he plays the drums in Bucky's band. I was born in 1964 in Monticello, FL. Our parents were more strict back then and my mom stayed home while my Dad worked there were 5 of us kids so hard times were the blues to us. Southern living was the best kind of living... loved it. Growing up in Tennessee, this was my life. We hated being inside. Atari had just come out, but there was only so much you could do with 2 sticks and a bouncing square. The youngsters of today don't realize the struggle. We learned from and respected our elders. That is lost now, and this generation is an example of that. They don't seem to care about anything but skinny jeans and Jordans. I thought we were so naïve compared to this generation. But looking back we learned life skills. Hunting, fishing, camping, growing and raising our own food. Come to think of it I was actually living in the best of times. Wish I had appreciated then as much as I do now.

I rooted for this guy when he was on American Idol. STILL think he should have won. My childhood was just like this. Sadly, social skills, and the actual NEED for them seems to have gone the same way as WRITING IN CURSIVE and the DODO bird.....it simply no longer exists....and we, as a people are NOT the better for it. Teah, I'd LOVE to have a time machine...I'd go back to that 'different world' in a heartbeat.

We would step on coke cans then fold it round the front part of our feet to make 'tap shoes'. And yes, you CAN smell the rain...and freshly cut grass which, btw means its probably Saturday. Kids were meant to be seen (preferably through windows while they played outside) and not heard. Kids today scoff at our childhood but personally, I wouldn't change it. I spent my childhood in the sun not going blind and brain dead in front of a TV or computer.

LOL!!! Bucky is a common name around my parts. Bucky is actually from this area also. We haven’t seen much of him since he was on American Idol but his brother “Rocky” who is his twin, still does a little performing from what I hear. This song paints the exact upbringing around here. Our area is absolutely country folks. I have to say that I thought it was hilarious how he always talked about wanting some sweet tea & biscuits when he was on American Idol but I guess he wasn’t joking bc my son is stationed in Texas in the military and he called me his first time he was sent there complaining that he was going to need for me to bring him a gallon of my sweet tea and a batch of my homemade biscuits to the airport when I went to pick him up. I guess there is nothing like home or home cooking. Lol.

Love this song! It's so true. Simple, wonderful times. I had nine siblings and we lived in a two room house my dad and grandpa built out in the country. Yes, we made our own fun. I would never take back those times. We went to church Sunday mornings, Sunday nights and on Wednesday nights. When the church held revival meetings we were in church. Daddy made sure we learned about God above all else. Precious memories...love you Mom and Dad and thank you for all you did.

You didn't dare say you were bored back then! Your parents would give you something to do! We would play! Kids don't know how to play! When I was a teenager we would go out to the lake. I would be in bed listening to their laughter as they played cards and goofed around!

In the summer when our chores were finished and we weren't needed in the hay fields we could be found in the woods tearing up the trails with our bicycles or at the graveyard hill (a very steep hill that you had to go over to get to the graveyard) using the hill to get up enough speed for the ramp at the bottom or down at the creek catching crawldads and minnows for fish bait (we would go fishing at the river or lake) or when the time was right we would be picking some polk to make a little extra $$$ a Walmart bag full for a dollar

Imagination is a child's best friend but today's children are being raised without it by their nannies the I pad, cellphone, tv, computer...not actual people. This world has become a sad, sad place for humans. I grew up poor but didn't know it because I had the same playground and games that all the other kids did...a swing set, a tree, bushes to hide behind for hide & go seek, a ball, jacks and the street lights which signaled it was time to go in.

You got spanked too ( not a lot .. if I really messed up & got a stern talkin' too ) You ate what was put on the table in front of you and if you didn't eat then you didn't get dessert NO SPECIALIZED KID FOOD, THE ONLY TIME I GOT TO EAT WHAT I WANTED was for lunch OR when my mom was going out on a Friday OR Saturday w/ her friends Most kids today are treated like porcelain dolls OR like they're wrapped in bubble wrap..... they'd never be able to live in the decades we grew up in ( even the early 2000s seem like a different time ) compared to today
