I do think something to keep in mind is the critique of “anime rap relying on references” is kind of universal. Most rap usually references weapons or sports to be effective as well. I’m not dogging the critique, I just think it’s important to keep that mentality consistent across the entirety of the genre if that makes sense.

I don’t think ya get what he is saying fully. He is saying that there are anime rap songs that if someone who haven’t seen any form of anime listen to them they would still think the song is hard and the song will actually persuade them to get into the material that’s being rapped about. Only focusing on the references and not the actual song quality ultimately puts a cap on the songs potential cause while an anime fan may think it’s hard, a non anime fan may think it’s trash cause they don’t know what’s being said

It’s just, after watching a lot of scru, you realize he feels that way for songs where he just doesn’t get the references even if it goes hard without an AMV lol. Meanwhile if it’s a dragon ball song oh he’s there all day cause he actually gets what’s being said, no matter how basic it is or how much it’s similar to other songs he’d critique for those reasons. Anyone can gather a bunch of character specific references and create a verse that’s really just a rundown of Wikipedia facts. Not everyone can take a character and rap as if they are that character rapping if that makes sense.

Man, Idk why it makes people so mad, but I absolutely agree with the criticism about making super direct references to the anime that inspires these tracks. I don't "hate" it necessarily, but I enjoy the song so much better when the references aren't super direct. It doesn't always take away from the song to me when such direct references are made, but a majority of the time that's what takes away from it to me because me personally I enjoy being able to relate to the song in a way. I actually also enjoy when an artist can do both, where they make a reference but that reference can have multiple meanings even outside of referring to the anime. It's not all that different for other genres either when the song starts making very specific references that I don't connect with. I also find that it can age the song as well. That's just my opinion of course.
