Note: Muang can mean a city, capital or center city which was the center of government, city-state, kingdom, depending on what the context is. Khun means "King".
When delving deeply into ancient history of settlement, Tai-Lawa people were indigenous inhabitants in the central, northeastern, and southern parts of present-day Thailand. Their ancestors were traced back to the first Buddha era.
The five Buddhas in the Aeon of Paattara Kalpa (meaning prosperous Aeon) are as follows:
1. Kakusandha Buddha, the first Buddha in the Aeon of Paattara Kalpa, who died at the age of 40,000 years.
2. Konakamana Buddha, the second Buddha in the Aeon of Paattara Kalpa, who died at the age of 30,000 years.
3. Kassapa Buddha, the third Buddha in the Aeon of Paattara Kalpa, who died at the age of 20,000 years.
4. Gautama Buddha, the fourth (present-day) Buddha in the Aeon of Paattara Kalpa, who died at the age of 80 years.
5. Maitreya Buddha, the fifth Buddha in the Aeon of Paattara Kalpa, who will come to reach enlightenment in the future.
In the early Aeon of Paattara Kalpa, the first Buddha emerged in Indian subcontinent. At that time, the whole Indian subcontinent was called “Solos Nakhon” meaning "16 large cities". The first city of Tai-Lawa called “Muang Swuang”, which was located in the area of present-day Suvarnabhumi and ruled by Khun Swuang, had emerged before the early Aeon of Paattara Kalpa. When time had passed by several generations, the name “Muang Swuang” was changed to “Muang Tong” which was then ruled by Khun Gaew Tai Fah whose major wife was called “Khun Ying Gong Gaew”. They had a beloved son named “Yod Gaew Tai Fah” along with 1 bright glass stone, thus they renamed “Muang Tong” as “Muang Gaew Prip Plee” according to the bright glass stone.
When Khun Yod Gaew Thai Fah became the Great Emperor, he was named “Phra Chao Maha Panat Borom Jaak Krapat” which was a name that appeared in the Buddha family already predicted. That means he would be the second Buddha.
When Kakusandha Buddha reached enlightenment as the first Buddha in the early Aeon of Paattara Kalpa, Phra Chao Maha Panat Borom Jaak Krapat was so greatly delighted that he granted his head to be a lighting candle to pay homage to the Kakusandha Buddha. His head, as a lighting candle, had a divine fragrance, a bright and clear light with no smoke, no hot. It is flaming only in that area, not spreading to other places.
After having been dead, Phra Chao Maha Panat Borom Jaak Krapat was reborn in heaven of Dusit class waiting for being reborn on the planet Earth as the Konakamana Buddha, the second Buddha in the Aeon of Paattara Kalpa.
In the era of Gautama Buddha, the fourth (present-day) Buddha in the Aeon of Paattara Kalpa, there was a Tai-Lawa merchant supervising and controlling 500 carts of goods to trade in Indian subcontinent. He had a chance of listening to preaching done by the Gautama Buddha, the fourth (present-day) Buddha. He developed a strong belief in Buddhism, thus, he asked to be ordained as a Buddhist monk. The Buddha himself allowed him to be ordained directly.
After having been ordained, he came back to his home in Muang Praan, a big city in Suvarnabhumi for further meditation of higher level. After he had reached Arhant (The one who has achieved the highest Dhamma in Buddhism), he constructed a Wat or Buddhist temple called “Wat Poon Naa Raam”, preached the Buddha’s teaching to Tai-Lawa people resulting in having many Buddhist monks in Suvarnabhumi. In addition, he took Khun Tab Tai Tong, the king of Muang Tong, Suvarnabhumi, to attend the Gautama Buddha in Indian subcontinent. It can be seen that Buddhism was brought to Suvarnabhumi by a Tai-Lawa merchant, not Indian merchants.
