I was listening to Yamantaka mantra last night. Switched over to Mahakala, and almost instantly started having visions of the Deity itself and then skulls and and VERY distinct feeling of a cemetery. It was visual in a dark room, very real visions. I stopped when an image of you kept popping and and giving me a warning to be very careful. True story, thank you if thanks are due ;)

You do realize that "Yamantaka" means the "antak" (ender) of "Yama" , the god of death. It has it's source from the story of Markandeya who was destined to die but after chanting the "Maha-mrityun-jaya" mantra was rescued by Shiva in the form of Kalantak (i.e. antak (ender) of kala (which here means death and not time or black) ) So a mantra of Yamantaka should be chanted for good health or to remove sickness . Why would one "switch" over to Mahakala like that???? Westerners don't learn the sanskrit language nor the Indic customs and just blindly do whatever they want because the east, vajrayana etc is so exotic and mysterious. Pathetic. I am no Tantric (I am a Vaishnav Hindu), infact I am against most forms of Tantricism due to it's violence and animal sacrifice rituals. But even I know that you don't just switch over to chanting mantras of a fierce deity like Mahakala without proper training or guidance of an experienced and accomplished tantrik. These deities are supposed to roam around on Samsanas (cremation grounds) and fierce places like that. You invoke them, and you'll bring that energy into your surrounding. Again, I am not saying that I believe in these stuff, but if a person truly believes in such deities, then they are psychologically vulnerable to be in influenced by them. These depictions were/are made to invoke a certain psychological state of the mind and one should really be careful what/whom they are inviting in.

Does this mean that the typical 4-armed Mahakala of the Gelugpas is a representation of wrathful Akshobya Guhyasamaja?

Can you tell about Sudarshan chakara
@nicholasflammel2017 Жыл бұрын
Sudarshan chakra rarely is used in Mahayana Buddhism. Instead, the Dharma Chakra is the iconographical equivalent and is part of the Ashtamangala in Tibet (most of the 8 symbols are associated with symbols holy to Vishnu). One sees Sudharshan Chakra in the hands of Vishnu in the Theravada buddhist countries where there was Khmer Hindu influence. Examples being Lao, Cambodia Thailand etc. The famous depictions being in the Samudra Manthan statue in Suvarnabhumi airport Thailand, The Patuxai in Vientiane, Laos , Garuda Wisnu Kenchana in Indonesia etc. The point about Ashtamangala is that, 1. Conch (Sankha) - being a weapon of Vishnu (Panchajanna) 2. Suvarnamatsya which technically represents Ganga and Yamuna but is also a common symbol for Vaishnavate avatars like Vithhala, or being a royal symbol in Ayodhya. 3. Srivatsa- Being the emblem on Vishnu's chest which he bears due to the Great Sage Bhrigu kicking him. 4.Lotus (padma)- Again one of the 4 weapons of Vishnu 5. Chatra - Which is associated with the Vamana Avatar of Vishnu. 6. Kumbha which is an artifact of Kubera. 7. Chakra - Being the Dharmachakra. But the Chakra as a symbol gained prominence with Gupta period art, being the weapon of Vasudeva Krishna depicted in Indo-Greek seals of that era. 8. Dhwaja- This one I am not very sure about. I have tried contacting experts but no one could give me a satisfactory reason for it's relation to the other 7 symbols which are clearly related to Vishnu.

Any connection to Bhairava?
@nicholasflammel2017 Жыл бұрын
What do you mean by connection? It's the same deity. Mahakal is worshipped in Ujjain as Mahakaleshwar. Other than that Kaal Bhairav (who is the Mahakala form in Tibetan Buddhism) is by definition, a "Bhairav". In other Mahayana traditions that of Japan etc, Mahakala , i.e. Daikokuten is of a more of a mixture of Kubera and Shiva. Most of the iconography you see in Himalayan arts are inspired from Nepali tantric iconography of Kaal Bhairav which was originally inspired from the Andhakeshwar iconography of Shiva that is common in Cave scluptures as in Ellora etc.

What’s the name of the four armed mahakala?
@jeffwatt51143 жыл бұрын
There is Chaturbhuja which means 'four arms.' Chaturbhuja has one face and four arms. There is also Chaturmukha which means 'four faces.' He also has four arms but is referred to by the number of faces.

It's Mahakala...not Mahakaal...there is difference actually! Mahakala means the darkest one..where mahakaal means biggest time or infact timeless...As lord shiva depicted as whitest as camphor...so He cannot be darkest one!
