Caroline Riegel, globe-filmmaker, had promised her buddhist nun friends she would travel accross India with them. As the seasons go by, they discover for the first time their own country: from the Himalayas to the Andaman Islands, from crowd to prayer, from the isolation of a Himalayan winter to a globalised life and most of all far from the India we know.

What a fascinating and deeply engrossing documentary! India is such a vast and beautiful country. Thank you Caroline Riegel, for taking these nuns on a journey to see and experience India, and for posting this video. I enjoyed watching it. I also felt deeply touched at several places. These nuns are so inquisitive and righteous, too, one of whom argues with a man on the bank of the Ganges why he does not stop people from defecating and urinating at such a holy place, in the open. These nuns respect nature. It is time Indians learned how to respect nature too, and keep their rivers and fields clean. Thank you Caroline Riegel. You have done great service to these nuns. They would never have seen all these places, and even drink tea at the Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai without your help. I watched the whole video and felt so much about their life , I’m Buddhist too , from Sri Lanka 🇱🇰but live in London at the moment, but I never thought about the religion for life , but since locked down , since 19 Th of March 2020 , I began to think about Buddhism and Buddha , as I had plenty of time with lock down for corona virus . @@Theactualstoic I think it's a tricky question... as well as a good one. I can only explain it this way. There's two choices for you if you want to become a Buddhist. Either seek the path or lead a Buddhist lay life. Lay Buddhists don't have rules, just guidelines, so they're in control of their actions and decisions. For monks or nuns, there are rules because they have joined others in the aim of attaining enlightenment, but again their conduct is their responsibility. Regardless of being a monk or lay person, each person has the strength inside them to attain enlightenment, it's just a matter of our determination and dedication. Buddha or monks can't tell you how you should live your life, it's your decision, you can decide how much effort and time you're going to put into Buddhism and to achieve what it aims for. You can be a Buddhist who lives adapting fully or partially to the guidelines given by Buddha for lay people. It's a mixed matter of your understanding, priorities, interest and goals. I think the question can be applied for all other religions. E.g. how can you be a Christian without being a priest...?

They are called bhikkhunī or bhikṣuṇī. bhikṣuṇī mean female who begs. Monks all over India used to get food from peoples. They would go to houses and ask for food. Peoples always respected them. They would spread their teaching while traveling.

nuns in Tibetan buddhism sometimes are often being "neglected" or often not treated with equality like the monks, thankfully things have been changing with the influence of many western nuns. Tibetan women are extremely hardy and hardworking, this documentary really portrayed the strength and endurance of Tibetan people especially the women. thank you Caroline riegel for this wonderful and heartwarming documentary.

I'm afraid these are NOT 'Tibetan' nuns and are incorrectly identified as such. Zanskar is in Ladakh, India where 'Bhoti' is the language spoken. Their script (alongwith the Tibetan script was created in Varanasi, India circa 9 A.D. This was necessary in order to enable the study of Buddhism as prior to that time, Tibetans and the wider 'Mongol' group of peoples who each had their own languages and dialects were in effect illiterate. Hence the reason why the Mongols have no self written history!) The school of Buddhism that they follow/practice is closely associated with the Dalai Lama but is not Tibetan Buddhism). Buddhism (ironically) didn't come to Ladakh from India originally but instead from Afghanistan (due to the influence of trading with the Kushan empire) (Remember 'Bamyan' statues blown up by the Taliban?) Ofcourse, I remain open to correction in all the above.

What a joyful film! Thank you all. And I must say it is so refreshing to see the work of a real documentary film maker….and what do I mean by that? I mean someone who truly believe in the film speaking for itself and not use it as a platform for self promotion. There are too many modern documentaries where you see more of the film maker or presenter than you do the real subjects of the film. Thank you Caroline for not adopting the ‘me, me, me’ style of documentary making and focusing on the story of the nuns’ epic journey through India. What a group of genuine, courageous and inspiring women! This film has gone a long way to restoring my faith in the human race…. and I will always remember the phrase “there is virtue in laughter” in the closing moments of the film. This is definitely going into my ‘watch again’ playlist!

Hallo Caroline, truly outstanding. I did the Chadar about 20 times ( first time in 2000 all alone with a canadian friend) from Leh to Lingshed.There ofcourse I was often welcomed by the nuns of the Lingshed nonery. An experience I will never forget in my life.Take care and ma Julley ! Thomas.

The doc. just reveals us nothing but to discern & perceive how undiscovered & intriguing our world we reside is!!
