You can. But the budded trunk is produce more sap than compare to not budded.

In my own experience regarding rubber budder...almost 100% successful if the rootstock and the budwood are condition.

You hava proper preparation, the knife is very sharp, clean hands, and have climate condition...not rainy.. The best selecting budwood is better brownest color for better results and fast growing.
