@LLaz1957 Damn straight he was the real deal and made it look like breathing, I used to hang out at his house when he lived on Barbaree in East Dallas. Billy Gray lived two doors down and Vern Stovall and a bunch of other old Country cats used to get together and jam at Phil's house. Man those were the days I was about 10 or 12.

Phil and my dad Bill Smith were very close friends. They ran the small town of Olivehurst, CA. this is my moms phone so it says the comment was from her. She loved his dearly also

@ryandude1988 He plays the first part on the front neck E9th and switches to the back, C6th at Phil's solo.

As a boy, I heard this song all the time. I grew to hate it. My father was a pedal steel guitar man. Over and over it was “steel guitar rag.” He died in 1999. I would give almost anything to hear the old man play it one more time. I remember the day he put that heavy thing in it’s case for the last time. His hands were shaking and he looked so sad. He had a Sho-Bud that sounded just like Buddy Emmons and Shot Jackson. I love the Rag now because it makes me remember festivals, concerts, and dad.

@SpeedyNeutrino43 David Hartley is fine picker, but can't be mentioned in the same breath as Buddy. The front neck seat up is not known as Hartley or Day. The Emmons push/pull steel guitar is probably still the most used in the whole world. He is the father of the modern day steel guitar. Sheesh!

Great playing.Doesn't Buddy remind you of Red Skelton's ,Clem Kadiddlehopper with that hat and beard though?

Better include the late Jimmy Day on that exclusive list!
@connorm9558 жыл бұрын
Did he play this on that George Jones Bob Wills album, or was it Jimmy Day? Sure would help if they credited the musicians on the albums.

And neither of those great players have the "taste" that Buddy has. Tasteful playing , thats why Buddy owns the unattainable benchmark.

Uh, what about the late-great Herby Wallace? (He belongs on that cloud too!)

does anyone know what tuning buddy emmons might be using for this?
@kenbyng57312 жыл бұрын
The only pedal steel players that can be mentioned in the same breath as Buddy Emmons are Tommy White and Paul Franklin. Buddy has forgotten more than most steel players have learned.
@SpeedyNeutrino4311 жыл бұрын
Neither ones name on the guitar nor longevity has anything to do with virtuosity. Yes, Buddy Emmons is a darn fine picker but Dave Hartley certainly CAN be mentioned in the same sentence. I find his improvisation much better along with his phrasing. One more vote for Dave Hartley.

Both are/were great players. The bass player was trying to play lead bass. Must have been a former guitarist.

Not to denigrate any of these musicians but If you want to hear a steel player that will knock you out, look up "Davepedalsteel" on KZbin I've never heard anybody play better.

@awnok That'll be `set up` not `seat up`. That's a girly thing!
