This is actually a historic act of kindness. I am a major Carson fan growing up, seen countless episodes, many more than once. I watch him to this day, I DVR daily on Antenna TV. There’s always that 3rd guest, usually younger, just starting out, not as well know, a singer or comedian who would always get “bumped” due to the other comedy bits or guests who went long. It used to annoy me how they would overbook the show. I always felt bad for the bumpee. Put yourself in their place. You’ve made it! You’re in the Green Room at the Tonight (Effing) Show with Johnny Carson. Your name’s in the TV Guide & it was on the screen before Carson came out from behind the curtain. Ed McMahon said your name. Your family & friends are so proud & excited for you. They’ve got “watch” parties going so they can enjoy your big break with others who love you. Soon an assistant pokes her head in the door & says they’ll have to reschedule, you’ve been cut, we went over the time allotted each segment. No fanfare-you walk out of the studio, hearing the applause & laughter that was stolen right out from under you. That’s show business. Buddy Hacket is the ONLY.....ONLY guest, that I’ve seen, in the 30 yrs! of the Tonight Show to show such kindness, humility, selflessness, a respect for young talent....it made me cry. To speak honestly to the audience, cause they wanted more, he’s genuinely hilarious. To tell the crowd, she’s a fresh talent, she’s been back there waiting, it’s her turn, my turn is done. That just means I’ll have to come see u again & tell some more stories. That’s what they used to call “a class act.” Wow!

@@daviddemar8749 - I just watched this episode on a T.V. rerun, & came here to share Hackett's 4 ball joke with my wife and son. Ally Sheedy had just completed the movie "Short Circuit," & tried to describe the storyline to a bewildered Carson. When she came on stage, after Buddy Hackett's kindhearted, altruistic gesture, Ally walked passed Johnny to give Buddy a hug (Johnny looked dejected standing with arms open for a greeting). She then turned and hugged Johnny. Ally was born June 13, 1962 (turned 18 in 1980), and this episode was in May, 1986, just before her 24th Birthday. I really enjoyed her (& Matthew Broderick) in War Games (1983). Breakfast Club (1985) was good, but years later, Ally really showed her acting skills as the psychotic serial killer "Yang" on four episodes of the T.V. series Psych.

Ally Sheedy had gained some initial fame in the movie "War Games" (1983) with Matthew Broderick, and "The Breakfast Club" (1985). Her appearance on this episode of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson (May 7, 1986) was to promote her new movie, 2 days before the release of the film "Short Circuit." Born in June,1962, she was 23 years old at the time of this episode.
Wonder who the guest was coming on next. I’m sure she was hot based on what Buddy probably did off camera.

@@TheBigMclargehuge because Carson wanted Dave to have his own show and let Leno kill the tonight show. Its too easy to want to take a show that already exists and make it fit to yourself.
