@2:21 true story! The actors were flustered because the extras clapping wasn't planned. The extras liked the performance so much that they started stomping and you can see all 3 actors trying get it together to start the 2nd song which they really sang and played. Look it up

This was raw and real. You can see Gary’s passion in this film. I loved it. I’m convinced if he was from that era, he would’ve been a musical star himself.

I think Busey deserved the Oscar for this performance, maybe the best biopic I've ever seen, and because it was about Buddy and his life, so much a part of my life, it has always held a special place in my affections. Still enjoy watching it. I was a D.J. at the local radio station in High School, and played all those songs when they first came out, and like the rest of my generation understand I was hearing something special. Most requested songs that I played, almost wore the grooves out in the records. (Remember records?) Best years of my life, and this movie always brings it back, bittersweet though it is to remember that world, so long gone now. But we still have the music, and I still love it.

Never the most factually correct, with dozens of historical inaccuracies, but nevertheless this film really captured the essence of Buddys musical spirit and Busey was sensational. Watched this over and over as a kid , and am so glad I did. Still Love it. Thanks for posting

Busey really deserved to win the Oscar for this performance. That's actually him singing, although the guitar was dubbed in. Both Charles Martin Smith (Ray Bob) and Don Stroud (Jessie) are actually playing bass and drums respectively. They're also singing backup vocals as well. A great film with talented actors that didn't get the credit they deserved
@That_AMC_Guy6 жыл бұрын
Actually, that's mostly ALL Busey playing the guitar. There's a few bits the were dubbed in post to clean up some sound issues but I can safely say that 95% of the guitar work in the movie is Busey playing. He's a very accomplished guitar player.
@rowen36486 жыл бұрын
why would they dub Gary / He is an ex-session musician!!
@That_AMC_Guy6 жыл бұрын
Movie Magic. Listen to the intro of Ollie Vie.... that's a guitar set to the lead guitar setting. Notice Gary's fingers.... he's playing a chord like he's playing rhythm guitar.... notice at :29 on the soundtrack, it switches from lead (overdub) to rhythm (live) and Gary never flips a switch or moves his left hand.
@classrockin6 жыл бұрын
Alfred Neuman I stand corrected. Busey is in fact playing guitar but I believe the lead was overdubbed, and Busey is playing rhythm for the most part
@That_AMC_Guy6 жыл бұрын
That's why originally, the Crickets had two guitarists: Buddy and Niki Sullivan. Buddy played rhythm, Niki did the leads. Sometimes they'd switch, but generally Buddy played rhythm.

Always loved this Movie. Gary Buesy really gave us insight as to who Buddy Holly was. He made Buddy come back to Earth for that 1-½ Hours. 💗🎸 So funny, the Kids really loved it when The Band started to play! The adults thought it was Nosie from Hell or Outer Space 🤣

The roller rink is still there and the exterior is basically as it was in the mid '50s. It is located at 187 University Ave. Lubbock, Tx. 79415 Look it up on Google Maps, select street view. Look East. It's the red brick building set off the road a bit. Tan brick accents, white door, white overhead door on the right side of building. It's now a warehouse for Gandy's Milk.

The first comment I read was ... " Love this movie " ... I couldn't agree more 👍👍! I first watched the movie on HBO (... as far as I can recall) once it was released for HBO ! I was already a Buddy Holly fan because I myself was playing rhythm guitar in a local Band here in Texas! ( You can't be born and raised in West Texas without knowing and listening to Buddy Holly) ... the local band I was in even played " That'll be the Day" ...and a few other Buddy Holly tunes! Gary Busey should have won an oscar for his performance of Buddy Holly or at least been nominated! I've watched this movie probably 50 times since it came out and it always reminds me of my years of playing guitar in a band... and making money at it! Easiest job I ever had... LOL! It's a fantastic movie! Rent it if you haven't seen it! 👍👍😎

I still contend that the rink used in this movie is the Moonlight Rollerway in Glendale California. But hey, kick back, rock out, and enjoy what used to be.
@DeeDee627504 жыл бұрын
Ivan Leterror The movie rink used in the movie was not the one here in Lubbock. It never had a neon moon. The roller rink here in Lubbock is not there anymore, but the building is. It is close to what used to be the Hi-D-Ho, which was popular with all kids here in those days, including Buddy and his friends. Buddy also played there.

@DeeDee627504 жыл бұрын
Dan Conway Gary Busey BECAME Buddy Holly in that movie. He was great. He had been a Buddy Holly fan since his childhood, so I am sure it was a dream come true to play Buddy. I thought he was wonderful. I know there were a lot of inaccuracies in the movie, but it was a good Hollywood production. It did treat Jerry Allison very badly, as Jerry would have never made a racist remark about Maria Elena. Buddy and Jerry were best friends and had been for years. It also didn't portray Buddy's family fairly. His parents and siblings were his biggest supporters! There are lot of minor inaccuracies in the movie, but when they totally mischaracterize major players in Buddy's life so inaccurately, it's really not fair to them and takes a little bit too much dramatic license.
@ivanleterror91584 жыл бұрын
In that day most of the SoCal rinks played organ music for skating. But at Northridge Valley Skateland we had a machine filled with current 45s for the various "skates" like men or women only, couples only, or all skate. I ran the program at times. Northridge, Ca 18140 Parthenia St Phone DI 54033 And I still say the rink in the movie was Moonlight Rollaway in the Glendale area of Los Angeles.

Yes no excuse for that, and also the drummer was rightly upset by the 'racist remark' in the scrip that was used by the Actor playing him. But those things apart it's still one of my favourite films (movies) and Gary did such a great job playing Buddy!! Buddy Holly inspired most of the musicians who made up 'The British Invasion' including me!!! as I listened closely to the way Buddy wrote when I was 'ghost writing' for 'The Dave Clark Five', you can hear Buddies influence on songs I wrote like 'Because', 'Anyway you want it'. 'Can I trust you', 'Sometimes' and a few other songs.

I love Hollywood’s version of Buddy Holly , I’m not sure Buddy Holly recording the song “ Mocking bird hill “ but I know the songs he did play after that was great songs ! One problem that they could have played the first version of “thatll be the day “ and Holly getting fed up playing his version of it ! There was also a couple different versions of “ Ollie Vee “ that Buddy recorded the one here doesn’t bother me one bit ! Just letting some fans that Holly changed his sound because the record companies wanted it Country , but Holly decided to play Rockabilly instead ! Holly did play Country , Buddy and Bob sessions some were leaked out after Holly had died in a place crash , there were many songs he recorded even after the Crickets and Buddy split . There were the orchestra version Holly wanted to record one of them he wrote for Elena about 1957/1958 True Love Ways . Elena gave some tapes Buddy Holly was working on that were finished by New York company and re recorded some with Norman Petty and the Fire Balls . I’m sure Buddy Holly would have been famous , but for some musicians after they had died .
