@Tessmage Tessera Don't know if this is just Hollywood BS, but in the movie the song was originally "Cindy Lou" and the drummer's gf was named Peggy Sue. Drummer pestered Holly to rename the song to impress his gf and Holly responded by offering a deal: You get the paradiddles right and I'll rename the song. So in that version it would seem that the drummer needed practice and Holly had to motivate him.

Jerry Allison is the drummer. He co-wrote this and "That'll Be the Day" with Buddy. He's still alive today (82 as of August 31, 2021). Peggy Sue was his girlfriend (later wife who he was later married to until she died in 2018). Yes, the recording and this performance shows that very little cymbal work was involved on this song. He adjusted the sound for either Crickets songs (more forceful drumming) or Buddy Holly solo songs (hand claps, just brushed cymbals, even hitting a cardboard box to soften the percussion for the more yearning songs of this type).
