I'm not sure any other song, written as simply and matter of fact as this once, captures a mans total despair in love than this one. Tom T. Hall is such a master poet.

I got him the audition he's talking about in Austin back in 1970's. It's true. His future wife, Julie, didn't want to hire him but I talked bandleader into it. He and Julie ran off together later on. They both left other people.

This is my favorite song and also a special song for personal reasons. It came out right after Martin Luther King Jr was killed and I believe that it is a response to that event. “Her” is the USA (in some ways at least; see the lyrics about the trail of her tears for instance) and the narrator is a Jesus-like figure, if not him or God themselves. Memphis is also a biblical reference, though obviously the other Memphis in Africa, but I’m not a biblical scholar by any means (that said, three days and nights also speaks to biblical reference).

@blackdogxx Holy cow - what next? Your treatise on the sacrilege of Jimi’s rendition of ‘All Along The Watchtower’??? You know - Seeing as how ‘making it your own’ is apparently a hanging offense in the realm that you survey. Couldn’t find a much more egregious violation than that one, I figure. LOL - what unhinged nonsense.
