@@juliosanchez95 It definitely has pretty substantial musicality, but you're right that it's partly an attempt at highlighting virtuosity and speed over the sort of carefully placed elements that both drummers are more than capable of. But, when you're soloing, you're not just filling and backing, you're the whole sound. Drummers can truly shine in the quality they introduce to a song when they switch up the beat or fill and change the character of the music, but when they're soloing they typically have to be the full sound. That's okay, though - sometimes that's warranted, and they know when it is, and that was definitely the point of a drum battle.

Yes Shaughnessy was underrated for sure. His talents were amazing but when your next buddy rich unfortunately it's no contest although like you say he did very well! The entire Tonight Show band was world-class musicians unappreciated in today's world. Doc Severinsen gray trumpet player and on and on. The thing that kills me is the kids today play covers very well to songs with with a cool modern drumming but when it comes to doing a solo they don't understand at all first of all there is no way to do it right holding the sticks with match grip. Also, do you think banging on 100 drums doing different things makes them a great soloist. They are good around the kids weren't playing a song but that's about it.

I had the pleasure of studying with Ed back in summer of 78 and he was a fountain of information. I learned more everyday from him that still sticks with me today. Weaker hand excercises, swing, time and feel, Indian rhythm. Just a an around great individual. Anyone that could hold that drum chair for 30 years on The Tonight Show had to cut the mustard 5 nights a week. Think about it, he had to back a different performance every night! R&B artists, Jazz, Rock, Country, Pop, you name it...Eddie Shaughnessy covered it all for 30 years! True he wasn't Buddy Rich, but he was a heck of a DRUMMER.

At 02:00 Buddy does one of his trademark techniques where he plays sixteenth notes with his left hand on the snare.... one of the things only credited to Buddy at that time.... then over to Ed and bam... pulls out the same technique perfectly!.... you can tell by the look on his face he knew Buddy would notice that. Little things like that that let you know Ed S. was the real deal.

I think Ed was terribly underestimated. When people talk about greatest jazz drummers we think of Buddy, Louis, etc., but Ed is right up there with them.

Unca Buddy and Unca Eddie.....two masters who enjoyed the art of drumming and eachother's friendship. Carson, too a close friend of both Rich and Shaughnessy, knew the magic that was taking place.

Okay, let me break it down for those of you who don't know the technicalities of drumming... Buddy Rich has a deep, St Tropez tan, but Ed Shaughnessy's mutton chops are swingin'. Ed's got a groovy amulet, but Buddy's got a chain of the finest gold filigree. Buddy's teeth are a super shade of dazzling white and Ed's got ...um...a super groovy amulet and a pair of bitchin' glasses. So, there you have it, the undisputed winner in this drum-a-rama.

Yea, he was an athlete on drums, took up martial arts aside from percussion. I noticed Buddy looks to be playing a generation older Ludwig early 70's and Ed late 70's. I'd rather have Buddys drum kit. I thought the same with his tuning. Wound up tight and canned, not my favorite sound. At the speed he could play it , sounds great for him.

Dig the mutual regard... ...they are not trying to cut each other, they are simply enjoying each other (more than any non-drummer watching this can possibly comprehend), and inspiring each other... ...and this magnificent display of musical talent was, more often than not, almost nightly, business-as-usual on the Carson "Tonight Show." Children: Study the Past, it contains Wonders.

Fact for most of what you mentioned. Yeah they were inspiring each other and competition as well , at least from Buddy Rich standpoint, anyone who's known him on or off stage could back that , he was a competitor in every sense, and undefeated at drums to this day - something another drummer could more than comprehend bud, including Ed and the rest of us.
