Bernard "Buddy" Rich (September 30, 1917 - April 2, 1987) was an American jazz drummer and bandleader. Rich was billed as "the world's greatest drummer" and was known for his virtuosic technique, power, groove, and speed.
Rich was born in Manhattan, New York, to Jewish vaudevillians Bess (Skolnik) and Robert Rich.:6 His talent for rhythm was first noted by his father, who saw that Buddy could keep a steady beat with spoons at the age of one. He began playing drums in vaudeville when he was 18 months old, billed as "Traps the Drum Wonder." At the peak of Rich's childhood career, he was reportedly the second-highest paid child entertainer in the world (after Jackie Coogan). At 11 he was performing as a bandleader. He received no formal drum instruction, and went so far as to claim that instruction would only degrade his musical
talent. He also never admitted to practicing, claiming to play the drums only during performances and was not known to read music. He expressed great admiration for, and was influenced by, the playing of Chick Webb, Gene Krupa, Dave Tough, and Jo
Jones, among others.
Rich first played jazz w ith a major group in 1937 with Joe Marsala and guitarist Jack Lemaire. He then played with Bunny Berigan (1938) and Artie Shaw (1939), and even instructed a 14-year-old Mel Brooks in drumming for a short period when
playing for Shaw. At 21, Rich participated in his first major recording with the Vic Schoen Orchestra (the band that backed the Andrews Sisters).In 1938, he was also hired to play in Tommy Dorsey's orchestra where he met and performed with Frank Sinatra. In 1942, Rich left the Dorsey band to join the United States Marine Corps. He rejoined the Dorsey group after leaving the Marines two years later. In 1946, Rich formed his own band with financial support from Sinatra, and continued to lead different groups on and off until the early fifties.
The Buddy Rich Big Band in the 1940s In addition to Tommy Dorsey (1939-42, 1945, 1954-55), Rich also played with Benny Carter (1942), Harry James (1953-56-62, 1964, 1965), Les Brown, Charlie Ventura, and Jazz at the Philharmonic, as well as leading his own band and performing with all-star groups. In the early fifties Rich played with Dorsey and began to perform with trumpeter Harry James, an association which lasted until 1966. In 1966, Rich left James to develop a new big band. For most of the period from 1966 until his death, he led successful big bands in an era when the popularity of big bands had waned from their 1930s and 1940s peak. In this later period, Rich continued to play clubs and stated in multiple interviews that the great majority of his big band's performances were at high schools, colleges and universities, with club performances done to a much lesser degree. Rich also served as the session drummer for many recordings, where his playing was often much more understated than in his own big-band performances. Especially notable were Rich's sessions for the late-career comeback recordings of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, on which he worked with pianist Oscar Peterson and his famous trio featuring bassist Ray Brown and guitarist Herb Ellis.

I am absolutely convinced that Mr. Buddy Rich was a Savant. He didn't read musical notation. He had a "photographic Audio memory." He listened to an entire piece once and that's all it took. He knew what to play when and where. I rarely ever use this word - Genius. In my heart, my soul and my mind, Buddy was. I had the privilege and the honor of seeing Buddy and his Big Band once. I consider myself one of the lucky ones. Le😎 Drummer/Percussionist San Francisco, Califusa

I’ve always said that Buddy plays drums the way the rest of us drummers do in dreams, where the sounds just come flying out of us, as effortless as a rush of wind, and so completely inside the music, making it laugh and dance and explode, that it’s as though Nature had bypassed the human body entirely. There is absolutely no one else like this, even among the best alive now.

Bob Florence's Limited Edition was up there with Rich's bands. Listen to Buddy's band's recording of "Willowcrest," written by Bob Florence, on Big Swing Face, and then listen to Bob Florence's band's recording of it. Buddy was the greatest big band drummer who ever lived, but it takes more than a drummer to make a big band. Florence's horn players were generally better. They were mostly top-drawer LA studio players. A few Rich alumni played in Florence's bands later in their careers.

Buddy always is looking off to his left. Eyes moving about, little frowns and smiles forming on the corners of his mouth. I often think he was planning who was going to get an ass chewing after the show. He could be a tough boss, and at his level, few were able to match or play up to it at all times.
@acedrumminman
@acedrumminman 3 жыл бұрын
Buddy's habit of looking left goes back to the Tommy Dorsey days. I asked him about when I was on the band. He looked at Dorsey to see when he was going to breathe to play, as he doesn't read, this was his strategy when learning a new chart. The key to the drummers role is to be right there with the lead trumpet player, if he's taking a big breath, something big is going to happen...Buddy's ears and eyes were all he needed, that with his encyclopedian memory of all the music he ever played. It was a marvel to watch. "I approach every new chart like I've played it a hundred times, if you're not afraid of it, things are usually right where you think they are." His words, not mine.

No doubt that Buddy was a taskmaster, but the end product seems worth it. Also caught Buddy in a live interview and the topic of his being unmerciful towards his band came up and his reply was something to the effect that he wasn't any different than any other boss that required the absolute best from his employees. He went on to say that he gives 110% every night, so why are his employees any different.

It's weird how...there are like thousands of drummers who can "play stuff he played"... thousands who play stuff he never played... just thousands of unbelievable drummers on tap really... nobody plays like he did. To be fair nobody plays like anybody else either... but... he ... sure does stand alone. I can appreciate all of them I suppose. But...I still haven't seen someone tear apart a snare drum like him. Even when they sound like they are. Plenty of people do something similar. Never like him. ... he was him. I wouldn't expect him to do what they do either.

I heard Buddy and his Big Band in the late 1960"s when they played at Sunset High School in Portland, Oregon. He was on another plane and his band was also very good.

This is stunning, that opening chart is such an explosion of energy and tightness. The audience must've known they were in for a real treat within a minute of that first chart kicking off.

This was in Holland , which had the great freakish drummer, Huub Janssen. Interesting to see the comparison by big band and jazz enthusiasts there . Buddy for mine.
