With a great lead in by George Carlin here's Buddy, as always, playing magnificently on Bugle Call Rag. B played this tune the rest of his life, including his last performance with his band at Orange HS on 10 December 1986.

cloudview747 Thank you Cloudview, for this wonderful video. Did you notice that Buddy's snare drum is much less "tilted" than usual? In fact, it is almost level. That is quite unusual for Buddy!!! Anyway, thank you, Cloudview for your amazing devotion and dedication to the memory of B.R.

Thanks for posting this blast from the past, CV. I was in high school when this show was on, and I was deliriously happy. I got to hear Buddy every week during the summer. That Vox snare sounds really good, and what a great solo. That was Chuck Findley playing the trumpet solo. I believe he was around 18 at the time. I know why Buddy looked to his left when he played. Ringo was there holding up cue cards telling him what to play..lol

Our hero, Cloudview, strikes again!!! Cool having George Carlin up front, there, to boot! Lotta nitpicking in the comments, so I'll chime in on 2 topics. Buddy did not tune drums, he "tensioned" them ( his words) till they felt right. His rack tom being high could also have to do with the Sound crew wanting to make things clear over the tiny speakers in peoples' 1967 TV sets. Also, all of the drum breaks in Buddy's book were of a length specified in the charts save for extended solos. However, counting through them could be very tricky as Buddy would pick random combinations of 2,3, & 4 beat patterns (eg.3+3+ 2=8) that would add up all right, but could be a real beast to count through. Fabulous. F***ing. Clip!! Now on to the other three....

I appreciate the info about Buddy and his selection of random combinations of beat patterns. Thanks AJ.

Flawless. That ride cymbal's about as low as I've ever seen it on his various sets. Same with the small tom.

I remember discussions in the Killer Force band when a new trumpet player would come in..."Buddy's going to play around a 8 bar fill here."

Thank you for this post. 1967 seemed to be an even bigger year for Buddy than "normal". He released The West Side Story on the Pacific Jazz label, which featured (IMO) his greatest performance of The West Side Story medley and solo. Perhaps the greatest drum solo of all time, certainly way up there with Gene Krupa's "Sing, Sing, Sing", and Louie Bellson's "Skin Deep".

I LOVE that drum solo on the first album release of WSS! That and the Blues Caravan album were the first audios I ever heard of Buddy Rich. What an introduction! (Actually the Swingin New Big Band album featuring WSS came out in late 66. If you watch my post of Buddy's 1966 Tonight Show appearance you can see Johnny holding up the album.)

I think you're right cloudview747. I probably purchased it in early '67. At any rate, Buddy's incomparable speed had to be at its' peak. I bought the Swingin New Big Band album on CD a few years ago, and any time I play the WSS medley in my car, I'm up to 85mph pretty quick. Can't keep my bass drum foot in line. lol

And did you notice Buddy look up at the trumpet section a couple of seconds later? Probably pinpointing the culprit for a private chastising later.

In retrospect, I doubt Buddy would have ripped any of these early band members. Most of them were seasoned musicians and older than the guys he brought in later in the 60's and most of the rest of his life. Most of them probably could have told him to go pound sand and gotten a gig with another band in no time. I'll bet they weren't extremely fond of the traveling and would have rather settled in with a house band (Tonight Show, etc.), which I believe was the case with Ernie Watts.

It's not easy counting along as Buddy is soloing during that intro. I feel for the trumpet players..

That section is tricky to count especially the way Buddy plays. Sometimes it's hard to feel where 1 is. I feel for the trumpet player. I hope Buddy didn't give him a right hand to the brain.

is it just me or has anyone else noticed that Buddy looked at his drums and what he was playing much more than later in his career, when he would key in on one or more members of his band to the left while soloing, almost staring them down at times.

Good observation! I never thought of it before, but now that you mention it, there does seem to be something to it - although I don't think the looking to his left was so much looking at someone but rather just a head position that came naturally to him when concentrating on listening very carefully to what he was creating.

the trumpet who came in prematurely at 00:51, I hope the following gig was within walking distance. Also, who tuned the small tom? Way too high pitched, especially in relation to the floor tom.

Saxophone section sounds like it's scrambling a bit from about 1:12-1:18. This was likely a fairly recent addition to the book, not totally broken in yet. When Art Pepper came on the band he apparently gave Bill Homan a hard time for writing such hard saxophone parts in this chart.

+Andrew Chaplowitz Perhaps I spoke prematurely regarding Buddy not playing Rogers in '67. However, I don't believe he was playing them when this summer replacement series aired.

When this summer replacement series started Buddy was playing Vox. If I remember correctly, after the first or second show, the Vox logo near the bottom of the head was blacked out or taped over, though if you watch this video full screen you can clearly see the Vox logo during Buddy's solo. Never really liked the sound of those high-pitched toms, though the snare sounded pretty darn good, and Buddy was just superb in his playing as always.
