I played in Chicago and New York from 1934 -1977. I met Gene in 1934 and Buddy in1938. They were two different drummers to be sure. Gene had a very basic, effective drumming style and his solos were always very musical indeed. In this clip Buddy shows his impeccable "ears", taste, and timing.. He is aware of everything going on around him. Buddy and Gene had different drumming styles. I do agree that drumming is NOT an athletic event! I just view all great drummers as different "flavors"! :)

What I dug so so much about Buddy Rich in his career behind a set of drums????? Just when you think you think that you have seen him do everything that you have seen or heard him do before. But just like a Secret Space Weapon with After Burners and Drones and Cruise Missles all in One. Here comes Buddy Rich with a new more fabulous weapon that will knock your socks off. He knows this and he will make all the people who think he has given you every thing in drumming. No No No Buddy comes back and does something even more spectacular. Always Excite to watch and to see. The Holy Grail of Drummers that was Buddy Rich.

I love the faces he makes after his solo when the band comes back in. THAT is real emotional content. Buddy probably had permanent goosebumps. I know I get the chills just watching it, imagine DOING this... all the while that little voice inside saying: "Geez, look at me go!"

1959 a small swing group was out of favor in jazz. only big names from the swing era could get exposure. This was a trying time for Buddy Rich. He wanted to be a song and dance man, even burning a pair of drumsticks to prove his intent to give up drums. He also suffered a heart attack around this time, performing with a small group with John Bunch. But things changed. He toured the Far East two years later, got back with Harry James, which had a home base at the Flamingo, allowing him to sleep in his own bed each night and tuck his daughter in. But he got quickly tired of the commercial dance repertoire and in 1966, woke up his wife at 5am, and announced he was giving the big band another go. It was the key move of his career.

Andrew Chaplowitz ...it's kinda hard for me to feel sorry for Buddy Rich! I don't think he ever scuffled much! At the same time, there were a lot of drummers that could play all the same rudiments, but swing ten times as hard. And it was more than ten times harder for them to make a living. A precious few of them are still around. As are some younguns that carry the real message. Make it a point to go out and hear them play- in a club, a festival, or wherever. You'll be glad you forgot about Buddy Rich!

The very first live music I ever saw was Buddy Rich in the early 1970's, just a few years after re-comitting to his big band. And what a killer young band it was. The brass screamed with so much power I had to cover my tender young ears for most of the show. I was able to see this show because my father dragged me to the band's performance in a local high school auditorium. Imagine what it must have felt like to have to survive on those little high school auditorium gigs just to be able to afford to pay a band that size to keep it together.
@Johnnycdrums
@Johnnycdrums 6 жыл бұрын
@@BranMarPercussion ; In the early Eighties, me and my bandmates saw two separate big bands alternate between sets on the same stage. They just rolled the Grand Piano (it might have been a Baby Grand, but think not) back and forth. On one side was Woody Herman's full band. On the other side was The Buddy Rich Big Band. The concert was out of this world and for some strange reason it was performed at Gorham High School Auditorium. I think the concert was sponsored by University Of Maine and right next door. I'm guessing Woody and Buddy didn't feel U of M had the elevated, big wide stage, and ease of access for two big bands. Looking back, I'd like to hear the full story from somebody in the know, because U of M at Gorham campus is no slouch in the venue department.

I too believe this is Buddy's greatest playing on film.One slip up at that tempo and it would fall apart.From the Fifties to the early Seventies,his speed and precision were beyond belief.This was the year of his first heart attack as I recall.Nearly gave me one watching this.For all those who still cast doubt,your deluded.This is by a mile the greatest human being to ever play a drum set.Just accept what is before your eyes.The man was touched by God!!!

Purgatory, like some of us, maybe. Objectively we are almost all doomed to Hell. Subjectively, we are not allowed, nor have the ability, to see inside another man's soul, and as such, cannot rule out the possibility of divine intervention no matter how remote the possibility. Tradition cannot change because truth cannot change. Tradition ended with the last breath of the last Apostle.

Buddy was a fantastic drummer. I'm 62 years old and (I'll never forget) my parents let me stay up past my bed time to watch him on the tonight show. It's harder now to appreciate his musicianship with guys like Virgil Donati, Vinnie Coliuta, Brian Blade, Eric Harland and the like. IMHO, those guys drum circles around Buddy Rich now. In his day he was amazing. Drummers from the era of this clip, like Max Roach and Philly Joe Jones were comparable, but never reached the profile that Buddy did. I don't think there is a "greatest"....but if there was, Buddy would be in the conversation.
