Genius. Supple. Technique perfection. Passionate playing. Impossible for any other drummer to pull off. The ONLY drummer in the world that could make a snare drum SING like an actual opera. Happy Birthday, Buddy! We will always love you! Thank you so much for this Cloudview 787!

I for sure will always love him. Thanks Fred.

Speaking of making a snare drum sing Fred... I still, very clearly, remember being just a teenager and hearing Buddy Rich for the first time on the song Young Blood from the Caravan album. He plays the whole drum solo on the snare drum. I tell you Fred, the absolute miracle of what I was hearing resulted in a bona fide paradigm shift in my drumming/musical life. And here I am today still appreciating and marveling at it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gWfJhJ96qs-mgas 💜

I really can't think of any other jazz drummer that could play, drive, excite and captivate an audience like Buddy. The man was a complete natural with a pair of sticks, and it didn't matter what brand kit he used, he always made it sound like it was made for him alone from above. No one to this day, inspires and moves me like Bernard ''Buddy'' Rich and I'm glad that he was the one to be phenomenal and bring the wonderful sound(s) of a big band to my ears.

Thanks for remembering the birthday. I work in the area in Brooklyn where he grew up. Even paid homage to the exact apartment.

Beautiful. I've always loved Buddy's surprises. He often would play patterns to set up a certain feel, then astonish us by doing something(s) that blows our minds, when we least expected it. No one I know of has the nerve, or the ability, to play that way today. Thank you for posting this!

You’re absolutely right. His creativity was so complex. Often sounded like he was playing five drum sets at once because he could get around the set so quickly. Perfect press rolls here. I thought the Menza and Jay Corre bands were his best bands.

Unfortunately there are only a few videos of his 66-68 bands. Don’t know why not more.

Happy Birthday Super Drummer 103 today , you were my idol , my life role model and my friend .....from the day we met in 1969 when i was 11 , you put up with me going through adolescence and taught me so much not only drumming wise ....but about life and how to deal with fools and phonies . The experiences , coffees and lunches we shared are priceless . I will say that for the whole of eternity ....nobody will ever be blessed with as much talent as you were , and nor will anyone ever be able to nuture that talent into the absolute genius and musianship like you did . " Always on my mind ...Forever in my Heart "

This is simply amazing! There's so much here: He had a thing about playing most of his solo in Bugle Call Rag mostly focusing on the snare drum. Not always, but often. Here, he spends about the first minute playing around with snare, floor tom and ride cymbal before going entirely for the snare drum. It's rare to hear him NOT break up the steady 4/4 time on the bass drum. It's steady throughout the entire solo. What's really totally surprising, is that after the solo when the band comes back in, he STAYS on the snare, like they used to play in the 30's before it became a tradition to play time on the ride cymbal. This is the only version I've heard to date, when he plays the ending on the snare drum! This, ladies and gents, is creativity. No comparison!

Fantastic. Buddy tearing it up. Of course you know that Album cover you used "The Monster" did not have this song on it. Thanks for posting this.

Oh yes, I know the album The Monster well. The reason I used this photo is because I am almost certain it was taken in 1968.

Cloudview787 - I met Buddy Rich one time shortly before he passed away. As a kid fresh out of college, I wasn’t too familiar with his music like I am now. His hair was stone white. His handshake was firm. His hand was soft and thicker than mine. I was too scared to ask for an autograph, so we just shook hands. I also remember I was taller than him.

What an amazing version of Bugle Call Rag that I never heard before. This live recording is so clear from back in 1968. Do you know where this was recorded? Buddy in 1968 just rejoined Slingerland drums and he was using the Artist model snare drum which to me sounded so great. The press rolls was so clean and full! I have a video of me talking about this Slingerland Artist BR model snare drum kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKnddotufcucack Buddy used it on the Mercy Mercy album he recorded back in 1968 live at Caesars Palace. Do you have anymore audio from this 1968 concert Buddy Rich did? It was recorded so well and the band was on fire. Thanks for posting this excellent audio of Buddy Rich.Hope you have more from this concert.

No. And actually, since I posted this more information was passed along to me that convinces me this audio is actually from 1967. I will update the title of this post to reflect that.
