I can answer a few of your questions but first, it’s interesting to watch you watching this because, as a drummer, I can appreciate it probably more than a non-drummer. I have actually seen this solo several times, and it is pretty insane but it’s easy to miss what is the most amazing about this solo if you don’t know what to look for. For instance, early on he’s hitting the bass drum with his right stick and you can see it from that angle, but I can imagine that if you’re not a drummer, you may not know exactly what he’s doing, but I can tell you that’s absurdly difficult. I would say that buddy was a drummers drummer because mostly drummers can appreciate what he’s doing because it’s so technically difficult. I also can understand how it may not be appealing to everybody and on that note, I saw Ginger Baker back in 1990 with his band and the drum solo that he did Was absolutely musical. It blew me away! Apples and oranges. To answer the question of whether buddy was still good toward the end of his life I can answer that absolutely because I saw him months before he passed away and incredibly I saw him for free. I can tell you that he was as good as ever! It was crazy, and he had a super young band.

As a drummer I can assure you that Buddy Rich is staggering to watch and listen to.. His power and speed is unmatched by anyone I've ever seen and his mastering of all the foundational rudiments is why he can do what he does and make it look so easy for him. He had the ability to be incredibly subtle as well but an overall powerhouse of a drummer. There are a lot of great drummers out there and Buddy probably influenced them all one way or another.

Thanks for sharing this Larry. A really decent performance from a very talented drummer. Quiet and unassuming a real joy to watch. Great selection. All the best. Dave✅✅

I remember seeing him on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson back in the day (mostly the 70’s). I remember thinking that he was a really good Drummer. Johnny Carson was a Drummer. R.I.P. Buddy! Thanks! ✌️🎻🙂😎

Peart was in absolute Awe of Buddy, as was many REAL famous drummers. As for Ginger Baker, who i liked very much, had a nice solo in a song called TOAD, with Cream.

I like watching Buddy's solo when he was I think 65 when he was having a heart attack. The guy just kept going. He was an amazing drummer. No one like him. R.I.P. This solo is okay, but you have to watch the one I mentioned. So much better. In my opinion.

I find that the jazz musicians are in general kind of snobby but not all, I know a few of them are still able to walk through a doorway but others think they are above everyone else. I am a bass player myself for 50 plus years and know a lot of the jazz musicians in my area and a good part of them are down to earth. We have good live jazz that I often go see and love. In the music business there can be snobbery, just my opinion. 😎👍

He's phenomenal Larry, incredibly fast but I'd still rather hear a real good song,I'm not into individual musicians on any instrument and there are many great musicians out there in the world, they're a dime a dozen,I like songs Larry not individual prowess,I'd rather hear Ringo. Bob

for a drummer with his own orchestra tell's a lot about how good he really was. for me l think he was the best at what he did. check out his other performances they get even better than this one.

I think Buddy Rich dissed country music because he couldn’t find a country song where one of his drum solos would fit in. I’m having a think and haven’t found one yet. Although maybe ‘I Hear the Sound of Distant Drums’ by Jim Reeves. Too late now though.
