I am reminded of that famous political debate in which Dan Quayle is eviscerated by Lloyd Benson when the former attempts to associate himself with JFK: "Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy. I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy." Substitute "Senator" for "Mr Berlin" and "Jack Kennedy" for "Geddy Lee." - PS - or "Jaco Pastorius," I suppose (whoever that is! ... ah hah hah hah...) 🤓🤓🤓

FYI, Neil occasionally played traditional grip throughout his career, you can see this on several concert clips including Xanadu from Exit...Stage Left.

When he started playing as a lad, and with his first teacher, he learned with traditional grip. As u mentioned he would flip from matched grip on some of the more intricate rudiment stuff with Rush on occasion.

I feel that the deep connection between bass player and drummer is missing here. Geddy and Neil are really tight. I agree that the sound of the bass is not remarkable here. But Jeff Berlin is a top notch player and educator and was friends with the guys of Rush since the days Jeff played with Bill Bruford and Allan Holdsworth. Neil asked to play with him and Jeff was the one who suggested Neil to take some lessons before this gig which led him to contact Peter Erskine. (ballsy guy that Jeff, ain't him?😂)

A few reasons why I requested this and not the other “real” jazz performances with Neil 1. You needed to see something with Neil from his jazz days 2. I had actually never seen this before for some reason until about 2 months ago 3. It’s Rush so fits into your current reviews 4. Most important, I was curious to get your take on the bass sound. I hate it as it’s thin to me but he at least plays incredibly. Neil’s other performances are like Cotton Tail and one other. There are several videos from the very early days where the comment section is filled with “Neil can’t play jazz” to “hey at least he’s pushing himself”. And then newer ones from this concert where the comments are “Neil still can’t play jazz” to “hey, it’s better than before” 😂 Tomorrow’s video is likely a bust. I know that style metal is not your favorite so I tried to find a song that was different enough from their normal sound without going back to real early days when they had a different singer. Unfortunately most of their newer stuff is all kind of the same so yes, this will be my last attempt with them. Unless you surprise me and say it was AMAZING.

I was there for the taping. It was right down the street from me. I actually thought the idea of playing YYZ(ed) in a big band context was a good one, and a lot of it worked (for me). I do agree with you that it could've been done better. The overall effect of this performance was very Maynard Ferguson-esque. It really reminded me of Maynard. Brash, epic, and, yet, hilarious at the same time, just because of the bombast. Wish Steve Marcus had still been around to take part. He would've gotten a kick out of it.

Neil was taught Traditional grip when he was a child and has used it throughout his career, It was not new to him , When Cathy Buddies daughter approached Neil to play this h3 didn’t want to he admitted Jazz is exactly for him Cathy kept after him till he agreed , One of the chat Charts he did was changed after he practiced it with out him knowing , Neil and Chad Smith both knew they were out of place

Yeah, I'm with Pat Metheny on the whole Jaco Pastorius copycat thing. It's already been done, and no one's going to do it any better than Jaco did, so everyone should just move on. Circling back to YYZ, the irony is that Geddy's main inspiration for that particular piece was Jaco/Weather Report.

Never heard this. Not sure I want a second chance. I mean it’s fine. Is it just me, or does Neil sound tentative here? He sounds to me like he’s not sure he should be hitting the drums as usual. It’s like he’s Neil, but he’s trying be jazzy, but … I don’t know. Plus, on swing/can’t swing question, it’s interesting that he plays the opening here with one hand like he’s trying to swing, but he normally plays it two hands. And so he’s just kinda off the rest of the way? Just me? Anyway, interesting find. Thanks.

I would never have seen this had you not posted it. Thanks! :) Not my favorite by far, but parts of it were interesting. Too much of the solo sounded like a mess to me, but that's probably a matter of taste and me also not really being into jazz or big band kinds of sounds. Brass in the morning is not something I would even normally risk...

Never seen this video before and, I didn't hate it. I thought the arrangement was pretty well done and Neil acquitted himself very nicely. I grew up with Big Band and Classical music, my dad loved it and I have always loved it as well. So I feel this was pretty good overall. Would I make a point to watch it again, probably not. Thanks for this, it was alright.

There are moments where you can hear how this could've really worked with a better arrangement and a real swing drummer (sorry Neil) but it ends up as more of a novelty for Rush fans than actual jazz.

Neil played his part pretty much exactly the same. And I agree, from the solo section on it mostly worked. But if you want a bassist mismatch story involving Jeff Berlin, in 1989 Tony Levin had to drop out of the Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe touring band due to illness. Bruford had worked with Jeff in the late 70's and knew he could jump in on short notice. Jeff took the gig but refused to alter his sound on the old Yes stuff they were playing. Go check out the video they put out -- JB sounding like Jaco on Chris Squire bass parts. Plus he openly talked smack about the old Yes stuff in interviews afterwards. Ouch.

Yeah, didn't like this. "Love for Sale" and the solo from this tribute are the best examples of Neil's jazz progression, IMO. In "Love for Sale," you can see a big difference in dynamics; the symbol ride (in segments); and, (after the sax solo), Neil shows he can push the horns. Also Neil's left trad. hand motions are relaxed and smooth and even his gross motor groovin' looks much better. The 91' Buddy gig was pretty rough by most accounts, and the 94' Burning for Buddy" gig (Cotton Tail) was better but still stiff. Didn't see any footage for "Burning for Buddy 2." If Matt doesn't request "Love for Sale", I'll send a request out so the J.P. drummer corps can "chime" in. Mediocre guitar player's take... ; )
