My music professor was playing the trumpet with Buddy that day. He's basically obscured by Buddy the whole time but you can see if you know who to look for. I'm so envious of the fact that he not only got to see him play but actually played with him.

Simply incredible. I swear my heart stops beating and all I can do is stare in silence as he plays a drum solo...

Being quite old at that time, his age never got the better of him. Fantastic performance and dexterity.

Its amazing to watch, admire and learn a bit about how amazing Buddy could make any drum set sound. The beauty of his unique touch and phrasings are still making my jaw hit the floor on a daily basis for years (and I'm sure it will remain like that until the end of time). I learn a lot from this man. Beautiful musical expressivity though his sticking and general body language. A consumate genius of his instrument. I enjoy "old shool" drumming a lot more than the new one, to tell you the truth.

Everything about his playing is incredible. His snare work, cymbals, rims...the entire kit. Incredible. Larry, Taiwan

Preach it Phil Ambros. No one did what he did as a drummer, bandleader, vaudeville performer, actor, singer, dancer, comedian. He endured the swing, bebop, rock n' roll, MTV generation and still was the top of the heap! Oh, one other thing, he was 67!!! when this was shot,... two years before he lost his fight to cancer in '87. Travis Barker!?! yeah, right, I'd love to see him try to play the Buddy Rich Big Band chart book night after night with this intensity at that age.

i dont see many drummers talk about the way buddys cymbals sound and he dont abuse or even play em for a while and then BAMMM beautifuls cymbals. the art of hitting a cymbal. never be another drummer with such classy taste.

Why you people hating, is there no appreciation for anything these days besides punk rock? jeez, this man is definetly one the best drummers out there and any drummer would give a ton to just see buddy rich at least once! the only downfall to buddy rich was that he could not read music, thats why he only did his big band performances instead of clinics. But Buddy Rich is in my opinion The best jazz drummer ever. i give this man 5 stars.

Buddy would have been 97 yesterday , little did his mother realise the day she gave birth to him ....that she was giving birth to someone who would change the face of drumming and music forever more . Not in the next 50 milion years will anyone come along and play drums like Buddy did , i actually believe that aliens visted here 97 years ago ....the product of which was a drummer called Buddy Rich .

...And well all shouldn't forget the increased difficulty of play drums set up in the traditional jazz format . . . not to mention the large drums he used, compared to todays typical drum set-ups and sizes. To play like that on that drum set at that age?!?......whew!

Good lord... I saw him twice: in '83 (Cleveland; the best one of the two: made me cry when he did the cymbal thing (that he also does here) it was so heavy...) and in '86 in New Haven right before he died. Say what you want about him being a prick (and he ~was~ one, tho' I love the 'bus tapes' as much as anybody ;): the simple fact is that he killed the shit...

Truly the best drummer ever! Seems like every video i see of Buddy here on youtube always has him being compared to travis barker. Sure travis has potential but you can't compare him to Buddy. He's got a lot more to go through. There's still Neal Peart, Mike Portnoy, Virgil Donati, Thomas Lang, Terry Bozzio, SteveGadd and many other totally awesome drummers out there today. And on top of them all, is The Buddy Rich!

I love how I can't watch one single video of a drum solo, without someone mentioning Travis Barker. Seriously if people really hate him so much, don't listen to Blink 182 and don't watch his videos. I don't care for mexican food, but I don't order a burger and say "Man this burger is so much better than any burrito!" I don't know why people compare them either, it's all about playing music you enjoy and doing what you love. I didn't realize it was suddenly a contest.

Nice! One of the things that today's drummers could learn from Buddy is to not bash symbols! Buddy actually would use them as musical instruments, getting the most variety of sounds out of them instead of using them as nothing more than something to hit and accentuate an up or down beat. Nothing drives me more crazy than senseless symbol bashing!

Juan, you are wrong my friend. Buddy's solos are full of emotional outbursts. He is one of the few that chose to match the monotony of a drum solo with mutual shifts from raging to quiet moments. It is not only technique and speed, it is also a matter of taste and style. Rich is as classy in his solos as it gets. It is not mindless fast loops and rhythmic interludes.

You're obviously a young person by the way you talk so I won't fault you for admiring the heavy pounders of the instrument. However, given a few years and a better understanding of the complexities of the instrument, you'll gain an appreciation for the art of making music. Good luck on your journey.

the funny thing is the 13 year olds who love him now will more than likely grow out of him by the time they are in their twenties, as their taste hopefully matures! travis barker is a fad drummer, i'm sure he is good at what he does, ANYWAY.... how about that Buddy Rich huh? what a fine drummer, eh?

@drums4hire Not only that....they're out of their fucking mind's! Travis is a good drummer, not great, Neil idolizes Buddy and would be the first to say he doesn't have anything near the natural skill, fast hands or most importantly..... feel! Jo Jo is amazing and reminds me a lot of Buddy and truly one of the greats! As is Whekl, Caliauta, Chambers, Jimbo, Gadd and so many other drummers famous for being so, not just because they're in a flavor of the day 'Pop Band'.

"I prefer Jo Jo Mayer", "Neil Peart is better" and finally "Travis Barker brings a whole new level of sportsmanship and flair to drumming." To all those who made those comments, and many more, where the fuck do you think these guys got their influences from? Buddy, Gene, Philly Jo, Joe Morello etc. Maybe some of your guys have progressed and taken drumming to another level, but you can always trace their drumming roots back to the old school guys. Take a history lesson morons!!!!
