His ambidexterity is amazing. Because of Simon, I started playing EVERYTHING with my left hand so I can even out everything. Not only can I lead with my left hand, my fills have also felt and sounded fuller.

Agreed is all I have to say. And Buddy did it with a lot less. However, Simon is still the most incredible drummer we have today! I love his style, his musicianship, and his humble attitude. Thank you Simon!!! Gunny

He´s simply brilliant. I would propose that the ones that critizice him, should upload some of their own work. If they don´t, than it only sounds like envy...

The faithful rail about sacrilege, can't veil their contempt. The audacity of Simon Phillips to dare tread into the "Lourdes" blessed waters of Buddy's catalogue. Thanks for posting this gem. I've passed it on to several young percussionists who are in dire need of experiencing stick-work beyond Lars Ulrich's shed building. First heard Simon on Judas Priest's R.Glover produced "Sin after Sin", mid-70's. What a long, versatile career! This could introduce young percussionists to Buddy's work!!!

Incredible performance. I don't think he over played. Buddy was prone to over the top playing with his band as well. I think Simon did an amazing job.

For the record, I know for a fact that when Simon recorded his tracks for "Burning for Buddy 1", he wrote the chart out in the car on the way to the airport while listening to the BR original. Once he got to the studio each drummer had 1 hour to get a drum sound and record their tracks. I am sure when Simon recorded this, the circumstances were not much different. Not making excuses, but his performance, Weckl's and Bissonette's from this same session were pretty amazing, all things considered.

Great work on my personal favorite chart that the Buddy Rich Band did. Wonder.....must be Simon's too . He seems real familiar with the piece. These guest drummers all studied the Buddy Rich method and secretly listened to his music... I'm sure. I must buy this video!!!

This was a tribute to Rich, not an attempt to re-create his playing (not that anyone could do that). The drummers on this project all show the greatness of their own styles, and Phillps is true to his here, and definitely does the chart justice.

I believe it was Donall (Don) Piestrup. At least he did a number of arrangements for the BR band.Goodbye Yesterday amoung others like "New Blues", and "Group Shot". Goodbye Yesterday is off the Mercy Mercy album recorded live at Ceasars Palace.

He used most everything during the track, and that's his kit set up, it's been like that for 30 years. He played more than one track at this session and always makes good use of his kit.

Geeze, I'm getting old! 26 years ago I picked up my beautiful mahogany Tama Royal Stat kit that came with a promotional pamphlet and it was Simon Phillips that was used in the photographs. Even 26 years ago, the kit had allegedly stopped production 2 years prior to my purchase. So the pamphlet was almost 30 years old. My point is that Simon is still quite young in this vid, meaning that this vid is probably ten or fifteen years old, but your point is heard and understood. I agree w/ you, btw :)

To me, this is a very refreshing take and the drumming is impeccable - it's NOT meant to sound like BR as it is a drummers tribute to him - to replicate his style and licks would render it a joke!! Buddy was Fantastic but the fact that you got all these amazing drummers playing his repertoire in their own style says it all!!

I saw Simon at a Zildjian clinic in London along with jazz drummer Pete York in about '81, and someone suggested he have a go on Pete's set to show that his large drumset wasn't an excuse for lack of imagination!! He did ... and was just as amazing as ever on 4 drums!!

I think it's awesome and can't stop listening to this arrangement. The dynamics and flair of the different solos are mesmerizing. Phillips puts his signature on this totally by mixing jazz and rock drumming techniques. Personally I think it flows better and possesses no stiffness at all. I think Piestrupp would feel the same.

As a tribute to the great Buddy Rich, I think this is just what the great man would have wanted: A younger generation of drummers interpret 'his' tunes in their own style - isn't that what it should all be about? To me it would defeat the point if the all tried to sound like him (?) Great drumming from SP here and all the the other drummers I have seen perform on this tribute. :)

this statement means well, but remember Buddy was a bruiser and with his godly ego all else didn't matter; i would think that Buddy would have scoffed and stifled Simon's open handed approach to drumming. I don't care either way Simon is also the stuff that legends are made from. :)

I hear what you're saying, but these are the interpretive challenges that I think the BR Big Band is always looking for, otherwise they'd just have the same drummer night after night. Or worse, they'd just shut the band down altogether because the Master had passed away. We miss Buddy, but its now about interpretation.

You obviously are not familiar with Buddy or his style. Buddy was always over the 'top' and completely dominated the chart. That was what made Buddy great as it was always about him and not necessarily the band. He made a long career out of doing what he did best and that was being a true showman. Kudos to the likes of Simon, Dave Weckyl and all of the others that carry on the legend. There will never be another Buddy.

Not sure that I am any more qualified to comment,,,,I think he is playing off of the multitude of rythms and counter rythms within the context of the song..... Over play yeah,,, but there is definite punch to his interpretation. Certainly not Buddy Rich,,,, but he is Simon Phillips. Cheers Froggman

Simon Phillips is a great player, but his playing doesn't have the edge Buddy had. Buddy's playing added spark and clarity that few players can reproduce.

Buddy was not good friends with Carl Palmer , he tolerated Palmer when he dated Buddys daughter Cathy ....several years later the tolerance had long gone Buddy didnt suffer people who believed their own hype , as i say in other comments ...i seen the man over 100 times live and got closer than most to him . He could be sharp , opinionated and everything was black & white with him ....but he was also very warm , funny beyond belief and at times very humble ...hope that paints a better picture

I have complete respect for Simon's abilities, but his take on this is a bit brutal for me. The feel the Buddy had with the band was SOOOOO gliding and elegant. Let's face it, nobody played 6/8 like Buddy. Here the drums and drumset are overwhelming the song/arrangment. Just my take.

Technically a really good drummer, but too bad.. he performs a too much in the smooth songs. Take this clip for example, he drums great but, I think he play much too much ostinato's. He plays dynamic, that a really +point.. but the double bassdrums/crash solo's aren't necessary for me though.. But it's an awsome drummer! B)

Not bad but he is overplaying the song. Although jazz and swing is all over the place sometimes, mostly it's just about keeping the time and doing it well. Discipline would make this track much better.
